John Kerry makes mighty stupid move

So John Kerry says he's going back to Washington to vote on that Medicare bill. John Edwards does the same. Kerry appears on the floor and talks against it. Then comes the final vote. Edwards votes against it, but Kerry is.... Heading back to Iowa?

 

The only two senators to miss the final vote on landmark Medicare legislation were Democratic presidential candidates John Kerry and Joe Lieberman, who returned to the campaign trail Tuesday.

 

Kerry and Lieberman had canceled campaign appearances Sunday and Monday to support a filibuster of the bill, but after a pair of procedural votes Monday failed to stop it, both senators skipped the final vote. They said passage of the $395 billion measure was a foregone conclusion.

 

The Senate cleared the bill, 54-44, and sent it to President Bush for his signature. The two Democratic candidates said there was no point in staying in Washington after losing the critical vote to halt the bill's progress by invoking arcane budget rules.

 

"There was no question about the passage," said Kerry, who was stumping in Iowa on Tuesday. "The vote was not going to make a difference in the outcome."

 

The Massachusetts senator had gone to great lengths to be in Washington, even participating by satellite in a Democratic presidential debate in Iowa Monday afternoon. But after the two-hour debate ended, Kerry flew to Iowa, saying it was more important for him to "take the fight for real, affordable prescription drug relief to the country as I run for president."

 

Lieberman spokeswoman Casey Aden-Wansbury said the Connecticut senator's position against the Medicare bill was widely known.

 

"He was present for the most critical vote," she said. Lieberman campaigned in Arizona Tuesday.

 

The bill gives private insurers a large new role in health care for seniors and adds a prescription drug benefit to Medicare. It is the most sweeping change since the program was created in 1965.

 

Another presidential candidate, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, also participated in the Monday afternoon presidential debate in Iowa by satellite so he could stay in Washington for the procedural votes. Edwards voted against the bill Tuesday.

 

Rival Howard Dean's campaign couldn't resist chastising Kerry for missing the final vote after the senator spent a significant portion of Monday's debate challenging Dean's position on Medicare.

 

In an e-mail to reporters, Dean's campaign cited a series of newspaper headlines about Kerry returning to Washington to take part in the filibuster of the bill, then missing the final vote.

 

During the debate, Kerry repeatedly asked Dean whether, if elected, he would act to "slow the rate of growth of Medicare." After dodging the question, Dean declared, "We will not cut Medicare in order to balance the budget."

So while Kerry bashes Dean at the debate, the Medicare issue he's so passionate about... He doesn't vote for! No wonder Kerry is losing by so many points in the state he's been a part of politics in for 20 years.

Joking about Kerry's military service has become a running gag ever since Kerry began to use it as a crutch against any criticism thrown his way.

 

Thus meaning it's been a running gag for several MONTHS now.

Actually, the AARP supports it --- though the GOP is WAY overplaying their importance now (AARP's endorsement is a "gold medal" or something for these kinda of bills --- might cause problems when the AARP disagrees in the future).

 

Prescription drugs shouldn't be covered anyway --- but Kerry needs to actually show up for these votes. He DOES have a job he's getting paid to do.

The AARP supports is, right. Which is why over 10,000 seniors have dropped memberships to the AARP. That was my point earlier.
