They definately have a strong loyalty to the 80s. I'm sure we can come up with some more that deserve a spot.

But I don't mind the Maiden bias:

Yes, I'd definitely say there's an 80's lenience (about 3/4 of the list, by visual count), but given that it was metal's mainstream peak, that's understandable

Now while it's more of an IMC list than a mainstream list (where you wouldn't see near as many relatively obscure but still good albums) I'm definitely glad to see bands like Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Death and In Flames get some love.

But having W.A.S.P. on here nullifies the list.

WASP = excellent melodic metal, over the top image aside

They even have Crimson Idol up there (#98), which I marked out for, since it's an excellent concept album IMO... it's not explicitly stated, I believe it's supposed to be symbolic of the fall of metal from the mainstream in the wake of grunge (it was made in '92).

I'll second that.

I really thought Blind Guardian deserved a much higher placement.

One group I cannot believe is absent is Gamma Ray. Metal-Rules loves nearly all their albums. They are IMO first class Metal, German instrumental perfection.

Pretty good list, I think most of them deserve to be in the top 100, the order is a little off though. Did I see Death in there twice? Wasn't expecting that, definitely deserved though. The whole 3 Maiden albums in the top 7 thing seems wrong to me, maybe all three in the top 20. I don't think Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss should be top 10, but it should stay in there somewhere and I like Reign in Blood at #5. Appetite for Destruction should be top 10 easily, it's among my all time favorite albums. My problem with this list is way too much Judas Priest. I was never a big fan.

Nirvana is not on there.

Why would they be, there not remotely close to being a metal band, the Nirvana bashing around here is becoming pretty pathetic.

And Venom should've been higher on the list.

Guest Choken One

I think that was a shot at how All lists have the obligatory "OMG THE MAN KILLED HIMSELF! HE WAS A GENIUS!" Band on there.

I don't think Reign In Blood should be number 5, and Powerslave number 6, but keep both of them respectivly in the top 15

Seasons in the Abyss is a better album than Reign In Blood, though maybe not as influential. I think Powerslave deserves its spot, though I'm a mark for metal songs based on literature, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner is THAT fucking good.

Powerslave does have its moments, but its not all that special of an album, but Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son is not on there, which kinda pisses me off

Guest Agent of Oblivion

That list is crap. Not one, but two Metallica albums, a bunch of power metal cocksucking, and Black Sabbath's Mob Rules. Why in the HELL is that on there? That album is terrible, and I'm just about the biggest Sabbath mark a person can find. Brutal death and grind are barely mentioned, Down and Acid Bath aren't there, either. This list completely ignores the past 13 years or so of the genre. Half of the crap on that list isn't even heavy. Twisted Sister? Queersryche? Metallica? Saxon? Please. Either the poll was stupid or else the fans were stupid. That list is vomit.

two Metallica albums

What's bad about that? Most metal fans I believe would agree that RTL and MOP are prerequisite owning for a metal fan

a bunch of power metal cocksucking

Yes well, like I said in my IMC thread, power metal is to the IMC what technical wrestlers are to the IWC. I thought they picked the best representatives of the genre (IE, BG, Hammerfall)

and Black Sabbath's Mob Rules. Why in the HELL is that on there? That album is terrible,

I liked it, myself

Brutal death and grind are barely mentioned

Well, it is a top 100 list, sacrifices have to be made. I believe the absence of brutal death comes from the fact that it's a niche audience even for the IMC. The IMC tends to favor melodic death (a la In Flames and the like) to brutal death...

What would you have put on here for this category?

Down

Great band, but not top 100 worthy IMO

and Acid Bath aren't there

Who?

This list completely ignores the past 13 years or so of the genre.

Not completely. They did have IE (though I thought Stormrider should've been on there, but that tends to get overlooked now because it doesn't have Barlow on it), BG, Hammerfall and Death, although those are all bands apparently you don't like.

Quite frankly I can't think of that many albums from the last 13 years that would stand out over the big albums from the 80's when you would compile such a list

Half of the crap on that list isn't even heavy. Twisted Sister?

I've seen people out there argue about TS' place in metal history. I'm still not sure myself

Queersryche?

Influential intelligent metal. At a time when most metal bands were either singing about partying or mystical evil stuff, they wrote heavy metal with intelligent lyrics.

Unless the only thing you remember them for is "Silent Lucidity", then I could see your point

Metallica?

Now you're just crazy...

And I know you're a fairly intelligent guy, AoO, but this hate strikes me as curious

Schmucks.

Manson rocked. Well, for a few albums anyway.

I don't like his music, myself, but have found him to be a very intelligent man in interviews

That's the thing that saves him from reaching the status of, say, a Fred Durst (as I point out here)

Almost totally unrelated but has anybody here been to the KNAC messege board? That board is full of real life Metal Eds, if you miss Metal Ed than I suggest you head your ass over there.

There's not a god awful Manson album, but its in decline though IMO.

To the website, Tool might be considered Alternative, not Metal.

The following albums, I feel, should not be on here, as they are not metal.

4. AC/DC - Back in Black

#13. Guns n' Roses - Appetite For Destruction

#18. AC/DC - Highway To Hell

#22. W.A.S.P. - W.A.S.P.

#30. Van Halen - Van Halen

#42. Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry

#45. W.A.S.P. - The Last Command

#47. Def Leppard - Pyromania

#48. Skid Row - Slave to the Grind

#57 Led Zeppelin - IV

#64. Van Halen - 1984

#67. Ratt - Out of the Cellar

#71. AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

#76. Van Halen - Van Halen II

#78. Kiss - Destroyer

#82. Skid Row - Skid Row

#87. Twisted Sister - Under the Blade

#88. Dokken - Tooth & Nail

#90. AC/DC - Let There Be Rock

#94. Twisted Sister - You Can't Stop Rock & Roll

#96. Van Halen - Fair Warning

#98. W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol

Also, the complete suckage of dick for Maiden and Metallica is just WRONG. The fact that Black Label Society has put out an album better than both Ride The Lightning and Kill 'Em All, and nearly everything Shadows Fall has recorded has been eons better than everything in Judas Priest's library, makes this list flawed.

But still, it's probably the best "Top x amount Metal Albums" I've seen yet. Doesn't stop AC/DC from not being metal in any way, shape, or form, though.

chave, I have the sudden urge to rip out your entrails and play tug of war over them with Agent, redbaron, and Angelslayer.

-Metal is responsible THE highest quality albums in music that can be considered even remotely "heavy."

-Marilyn Manson has produced ONE metal album, their debut Portrait Of An American Family, and even THAT is borderline on whether or not its metal (varies from person to person).

I'd also like to add that the lack of White Zombie, Opeth, and Dream Theater to this list makes me angry, but the lack of Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under makes me happy.

Well, you can't sing along to Shadows Fall. That's my only complaint about Shadows Fall...the vocals.

Hmmm...I just downloaded like six Gamma Ray songs, and, thus far, I'm yet to come across a bad song. Any specific Gamma Ray suggestions?

Rather ignorant statement, actually. Listen to the choruses of your average Shadows Fall song. VERY sing-along. That's where the BHC (Boston Hardcore) influence comes in huge, as most BHC bands have choruses you can sing (well, scream) along to.

Fuck, almost every song by Shadows Fall has some part you can sing along to. Gimme another one.
