The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

There are rumours that Calgary is going to get a Ranger... just not Messier. One of the New York papers reported that Eric Lindros may be rented by the Flames for the playoffs, with Calgary only giving up a 5th-rounder.

I wouldn't mind seeing Messier get traded, preferably to someone in the West

but NOT THE NASHVILLE PREDATORS!!! GREAT SCOTT NO!

And not the Canucks either....

Believe me, no one here wants him. Stupid Messier. He drove Trevor Linden out of town. And Trevor Linden is god. Thus, Messier is obviously Satan. He should go to the Devils or Sabres.

You do realize that the Canadiens are 6th in wins this season right? And that Jose Theodore, he hasn't been playing very good at all lately. Right.

And its funny how Byron Dafoe was considered this really good goalie until the Habs, who were fairly talented offensively lit him up, then he was considered shaky.

Oh yeah, their horrible defense that year:

Boynton

O'Donnell

Gill

Sweeney

McLaren

Brown

Norton

Rivers

This year:

Boynton (admittedly more mature but he was their best D against MTL anyways)

O'Donnell

Gill

Gonchar

Jillson

McGillis

Moran

Slegr

So three of the same guys, a few other guys that you constantly bitch about, a 4th forward, and a guy that the 'nucks gave away. So if in 2002 they were a horrible defense, what would you consider them now?

First through eighth, their is not going to be an easy matchup in the opening round. If #8 is the Isles, they can be pesky as hell and push any team to the limit. If its Florida, then that means they will have been pretty hot in the home stretch and I wouldn't want to face Luongo.

First through seventh could finish in any order (apart from T-Bay having a spot in the top three). I think if the Habs keep it up, then any team, be it Philly, Boston, T.O., N.J. or Ottawa could slide to 7th.

Wow ... I don't remember saying that Theodore "hasn't been playing very good at all lately", but I do remember saying that the year that the Habs beat the Bruins, Theodore stood on his head. Hell, he won the Vezina & Hart; I don't remember hearing his name mentioned for either trophy this year. And I'm unsure how the rest of the league felt about Byron, but he was NOT loved in Boston. The nickname "Byron TheFold" was heard pretty often around the Fleet that year, and he was considered shaky long before the Habs exposed him to the rest of the league.

You ask what I consider this year's defense? Much improved over that years. Certainly not among the league's elite, but to people that watch every B's game it is noticably better.

The Bruins D was horrible that year, slower than the Habs forwards and generally not that good in that series. The three that are still around are either as good, or much improved. O'Do is about the same (and he was among the best B's d-men that year). Boynton was a rookie then, and is an all-star now. Gill has finally learned to play like a man (and yes, I do bitch about him, he's 6'7" and just now starting to play like he realizes it). And out of the players that are gone: Sweeney was old and past his prime (I can't fathom why the Stars continue to play him); McLaren was more interested in head hunting than playing D; and Brown, Norton & Rivers were horrible.

With Gonchar and Slegr on the team, they now have 2 legitimate offensive defenseman that can move the puck up the ice (compared to the none that were there that year); McGillis plays the same game as McLaren, but better; and I'd take Moran or Jillson (who will both be healthy scratches more often than not) over Rivers, Brown or Norton. And while the Canucks "gave away" Slegr, the Bruins are glad that they did; 14 points in 21 games is nothing to scoff at.

I'm not trying to say that the Habs would be an easy series ... I'm just saying that I'd prefer to play them than the Leafs. It's not meant to be a knock on Montreal, and I'm sorry that it seems to bothers you so much. But it's the truth. (hell, with the way that Luongo owns the B's, I'd rather face Montreal than Florida)

With the Leetch trade I think Toronto gave up too much for Leetch. A prospect and a draft pick should have gone to the Rangers way, thus Toronto still goes for older washed up people, and not build on their youth.

and they are getting stronger by the day.

So Bruins fans...are you happy now that your GM is actually doing something this year

I can't speak for all B's fans, but I'm ecstatic with the trades. Especially since MOC is saying that he's not done yet. If/when Bergeron and Samsonov get healthy, the Bruins will have 4 decent lines already:

Knuble/Thornton/Murray

Samsonov/Nylander/Bergeron

Axelson/Ralston/Lapointe

Zamuner/Green/Donato

Add in another forward to replace Zamuner, and I'd have no problem with that as the 4 lines going into the postseason.

its great to see size again in the Montreal forwards.

Damn, TSN and Sportsnet must be panicking. There aren't going to be any trades left to make by the time TRADECENTRAL 2004!!!!! rolls around on Tuesday.

Same with espn here in the States ... how else are they going to fill in the 3 minutes that they allot for hockey coverage on Sportscenter?

nl5: envious of CDN hockey coverage.

I know, nothing pisses me off more than ESPN devoting like 17 minutes a week on SportsCenter to hockey. Thank god, that us Michiganders at least in the Metro Detroit area get CBC, which means we get HNIC and much better coverage. Now if we could just get TSN, I would be set

*can't stay up to watch Barry Melrose's "analysis" on NHL2Night*

wait, that's a good thing.

I use the TSN site, as well as Slam.ca for my analysis. Melrose is a fucking idiot.

The Nylander trade was a good pickup for the Bruins, merely for the fact that it allows them to play Rolston in his proper role as a third line centre who is responsible defensively but can also contribute offensively (ala a Kris Draper or John Madden).

What I am curious about is how these draft picks will be exchanged should the NHL shutdown for the entire 2004-2005 season. It has been hinted at (but I'm not sure if it is confirmed) that the entry draft would also be cancelled in that case.

So I'm wondering, will each round be 60 picks in 2006, and how will these draft choices be converted. If they are converted straight up (as in round for round) and the draft remains 30 players per round, then giving up draft choices this year becomes huge due to the fact that the 2006 draft would potentially be the deepest in history. To summarize, all players from the 2005 stock would be dumped in the 2006 draft pool. That would mean a 2nd round pick in 2006, which would normally get you a player of second round talent, would land you a player of first round talent.

Anyone heard anything all about how they plan to handle this?

It's gonna be a serious dogfight to come out on top in the East. Right now the only good spot to be in seems to be first in the conference.

Devils add Hrdina ... it's insane how many players the Eastern Conference contenders are picking up, this postseason is going to rock.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=75020

The Devils have made two very solid, yet quiet moves so far.

Kozlov gives them size, Hrdina is a sound two-way player who gives them depth.

And really, all they've given up is Michael Rupp.

Sens-Flyers is the greatest game ever

BTW, Brashear goes after Rob Ray

Chris Neil goes after Radovan Somik

Martin Havlat sits in the penalty box away from everything after starting it

Bottom line, the Sens are pussies tonight

Both Jim Dowd and Alexei Kovalov have contributed on the points so far tonight against Phoenix, with Dowd getting a short-handed goal, and Kovalov getting an assist

Good thing that is relevant to the way the Sens were acting tonight.

New Jersey is the only consitant team in the East, and they will make the playoffs.

The season series is at 1-1-1. Ottawa needed to show that they have the grit to make it in the playoffs and they did.

Philly seems to think that Sean Burke is going to be their answer in the postseason. He's not.
