CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2003 Boy is there a plethora of goalies out there that no one wants. And that's because each team has a guy just as good. There is only one goalie (maybe two if you count Luongo but that's iffy) who standouts above the rest and about 25 other starters who are all even. There are probably about 10-15 backups who are as good as or better than those 25 starters. Hell, I think even Ray Emery, Ryan Miller, and Kari Lehtonen (all playing in the A) could start and be just as good as almost anyone in the league. The market for goalies seriously crashed big time. Emery will probably be starting for the Senators whenever Lalime's contract is up.
Dogbert 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2003 So what do you do with Roman when he gets back? I don't know, but one thing's for sure: "start him" won't be the answer to your question.
LaParkaMarka 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2003 Keep him on the bench. Can't trade him, because there are better/cheaper goalies out there. Can't throw him on waivers, no one will take him. Just let him ride the bench and maybe make the occaisonal start (when you have two games in two nights). Minnesota showed that a two-goalie system can be pretty effective. It doesn't exactly hurt to have a second starter in case something happens to your main goalie.

treble 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 I really thought the Leafs were going to lose tonight, but they got lucky and pulled it out. The Habs had 2 different shots and pretty much an empty net and came away with nothing, then the Leafs got a lucky deflection on Sundin's winner. I'm just glad they kept the streak up. MrRant 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2003 Once again, living in Houston sucks for watching hockey, but I'm still proud of the way the Leafs have continued their winning ways... Yeah it's nice living in WA state. We get CBC and ESPN so it makes for plenty of hockey on free tv.

CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2003 Thank GOD... TORONTO (CP) - A deal to convert the historic home of the Toronto Maple Leafs into a grocery store has collapsed. Loblaw Cos. Ltd., Canada's largest grocery chain, announced Tuesday it will not go ahead with plans to buy Maple Leaf Gardens, citing high costs to covert the downtown Toronto hockey shrine into a Loblaws store. Loblaws said the high costs to complete the project ``outweigh the benefits'' to the Toronto food chain. The sale was announced in October and was expected to be completed by early next year once customary approvals were reached. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Loblaws was aiming to build and open a Loblaws "combination food and non-food market'' in 2005 with other retailers within the existing interior of the Gardens. One retail outlet was to sell Maple Leaf memorabilia and merchandise. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., owner of the NHL's Leafs and the NBA's Toronto Raptors, said it respected the grocery firm's decision and will now entertain new offers for the 72-year-old building. Renovation chain Home Depot had reportedly made a competitive bid that would see one of its big-box outlets, plus condominiums, on the site in downtown Toronto. Eugene Melnyk, owner of the NHL's Ottawa Senators and chief executive of drug producer Biovail Corp., had also expressed interest in the site as a new home for his Toronto-based junior hockey club, the Ontario Hockey League's St. Michael's Majors. In trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday, Loblaw shares rose 27 cents to $65.32. Shares of parent company George Weston Ltd. (TSX:WN) fell 40 cents to $101. source: tsn.ca

Guest Redhawk Report post Posted December 25, 2003 Two things I saw on Sportscenter that I wanted people's opinion of: 1. That guy who had his arm sliced by a skate on Tuesday night. 2. The coach who did a radio interview and blatantly slammed one of his team's stars. I can't remember the player or the team (I don't watch hockey) but he said something like, "If he doesn't stop playing selfishly and play team hockey, he will sit. I don't give a %&$@ who he is." the max 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2003 Didn't see the first one, but things like that have happened. The second was Lightning coach John Tortorella ripping his star Vincent Lecavalier for making a backhand pass instead of taking a shot on goal. The pass was intercepted and turned into a goal. Tortorella benched Lecavalier for the rest of the period. Lecavalier responded by saying that his instinct was to pass instead of shoot. http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=65543 That has the whole story. Personally, I see both sides. Tortorella is pissed because Lecavalier isn't producing as he should, but Lecavalier is frustrated with himself, but is pissed because Tortorella is making him into a scapegoat for being, as Lecavalier feels, a team player. My guess is that Tortorella will go if the rift continues.
DerangedHermit 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2003 Two things I saw on Sportscenter that I wanted people's opinion of: 1. That guy who had his arm sliced by a skate on Tuesday night. The Isles' Alexei Yashin. That was freaking gruesome to watch. It's a HUGE blow to the Islanders' bid for the playoffs, because he's out 10-12 weeks (not that I want them to be in the playoffs, LET'S GO RANGERS!). Thankfully, it wasn't career-threatening. DangerousDamon 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2003 How is making a pass selfish play, shouldn't coaches want their stars to make the extra pass and shit like that.
the max 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2003 Not too many passes, though. Sometimes, you just throw it on net and see what happens. Maybe Raycroft gets screened and it takes a Lightning bounce and goes in. That's Tortorella's view.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2003 Thank GOD... TORONTO (CP) - A deal to convert the historic home of the Toronto Maple Leafs into a grocery store has collapsed. Well that's really odd that such a concept would even be...conceptualized. It would be bizarre if the Stanley Cup MVP was awarded a scale model of a grocery store in Toronto. What is Maple Leaf Gardens now that the Leafs moved out? As I understood, it's the rink but with fewer seats, plus some Leafs memorabilia and a few stores. The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2003 In a perfect world all three greater New York teams would miss the playoffs. I think I hate them all. The Devils I just despise for very clear reasons, the Rangers isn't so much hate but just a burning desire to see them finish 9th with their inflated payroll. And the Islanders, something about that team bugs me too, probably the whole Long Island thing. Anyway all three suck. Go Canadian teams in the east.
Guest Olympic Slam Report post Posted January 1, 2004 In a perfect world all three greater New York teams would miss the playoffs. I think I hate them all. And the Islanders, something about that team bugs me too, probably the whole Long Island thing. Anyway all three suck. Go Canadian teams in the east. I don't mind the New York teams. - I like Islanders because they went from being the hottest ticket in sports in the 80's to loveable losers in the 90's. I kind of secretly root for them to get back to being a force. Although I still feel the sting from when they eliminated my Penguins (my fave team back then) from the 93' playoffs and ended any hope of a threepeat. - Like a lot of people, I take a lot of joy in watching the Rangers crash and burn. But, if the Rangers are playing well then the U.S media starts giving more attention to hockey. When the Rangers win, hockey wins. In 1994 hockey was a big deal in the U.S because of the Rangers. So, I kind of hope that the Rangers do well. - I've learned to like the Devils over the years. In 1995 I thought they were the most evil team in the leauge because of how easily they blew away the Wings in the finals. The Devils don't bother me because I like their players and I like it when the leauge has consitent organizations. 3 Cups, a loss to the Av's and a near miss in Game 7 in 94' against the Rangers has made for a crazy good 10+ years. I wouldn't cry if they came out tops in the East again. I just wish they had better fans.

You can only blame the Devils partially for that. I blame over expansion for putting too many unskilled players in the leauge. Let's face it, its easier to play positional hockey (the trap) then to turn fringe players into skilled scoring machines capabale of zooming up and down the ice ala the 80's Oilers. I also blame scouts for having a bizarre obsession with huge players that take up too much space on the ice.

I also blame scouts for having a bizarre obsession with huge players that take up too much space on the ice. *insert Vince McMahon joke* I have to agree with Olympic on this one. Expansion killed the league. If anything there should only be one team in Florida, Carolina should not have a team, neither should Atlanta, San Jose, Anaheim, Nashville, Phoenix and Dallas. I would say Columbus, but I am pretty surprised on how popular the sport is in the area, and the fans are pretty supportive. Minnesota should always have a Hockey team, its basically Canada's province, thats not a province. The fans are loyal, and Mr. Bettman putting a team there was a smart move. What they should do is move the goal line back two inches, so there is less space behind the net, and a bigger offensive zone to attack, and only a skill-ful team that can use the trap (New Jersey) and not just 2/3 of the league
the max 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2004 Well, the Dallas team has been supported, but the team never should have been allowed to leave Minnesota anyway. The Atlanta team falls into the same category as Columbus, as the fans are supportive, and they have good people running the team so they'll be competitive. Two Florida teams are overkill, but both are future powerhouses.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2004 thats true, wasn't the Minnesota owner some kind of asshole or something? I really haven't payed much attention to Atlanta, but I was just basing out of that whole southern area that shouldn't get a hockey team.
