Guest SP-1 Report post Posted December 15, 2003 The point is that, biblically, a priest has no power to forgive sins. Biblically, the church was nothing like any modern western institution. It was a very rag-tag, cell structure kind of thing loosely tied together in brotherhood and fellowship and a sense of spiritual family. Your faith is only as good as what you place it in, especially in a matter like this. Christ alone, biblically, is where our faith should lie. Not an institution, not a priest or pastor. Pastors teach, instruct, lead, but they can't forgive sins. Only lead others to the One who has made that atonement. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Yes, but it's still not a necessary office or function, and indeed gets between the believer and the direct, open relationship with God that Christ bridged in his death and ressurection. One could, of course, go into the differences between latria and dulia and hyperdulia, the doctrinal distinctions and their derivations from the Greek, the historical, Biblical, and spiritual precedent for and value of confession, and why calling Mary "Mother of God" isn't blasphemy but simply a statement of fact, but what's the point?
