Favorite Metal Albums of 2003

Recommended Posts

I'd like some contributions for your choices of Albums of the Year, so I can look into the ones I haven't yet purchased.

Here're a few of my choices so far:

Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon

Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll

Nevermore - Enemies of Reality

Iron Maiden - Dance of Death

Mostly big name groups, I know, but I haven't had much of a chance this year to look into more obscure bands/possible up-and-comers...

Enslaved - Below The Lights

Darkthrone - Hate Them

Zyklon - Aeon

Naglfar - Sheol

Opeth - Deliverance/Damnation

Soilwork - Figure Number Five

Goatwhore - Funeral Dirge For The Rotting Sun

No particular order(and what I can remember getting that was released this year). I'll probably add Anathema's 'Natural Disaster' to that list once I get a proper listen in.

This whole year I only bought two "new" metal albums. I didn't buy many CDs this year...which had nothing to do with file sharing and more to do with having no money.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Altered States of America

Fucking nuts.

Dying Fetus - Stop at Nothing

I enjoyed it very much.

After listening to a few songs from ND, I can say without a doubt that this is not metal in any way shape or form. Face it, Anathema pretty much abandoned metal with Judgement, and even if you could still make an argument for that, A Fine Day to Exit definitely marked their passing.

2003 has been fucken great.

The Project Hate - Hate, Dominate, Congregate, Eliminate

2 Ton Predator - Demon Dealer

Vital Remains - Dechristianize

Iron Maiden - Dance of Death

King Diamond - The Puppet Master

Behemoth - Conjuration

Grand Magus - Monument

Entombed - Inferno

Those are the ones that I picked up and fucken loved. The best out of all that has to be Vital Remains. They really put out a flawless fucken album of brutal death metal. Glen should really stop Deicide and focus on Vital Remains 100%.

Edit: I forgot about Murder Squad - Ravenous, Murderous. Excellent album from the members of Entombed and Dismember.

Only metal album I've bought this year that came out this year has been Black Label Society's Blessed Hellride, so that wins by default.

I'll hopefully be getting Dance Of Death for X-Mas, and with the money from the gift certificates I'll undoubtedly be receiving en masse, I'll pick up some new Nevermore (though I didn't particularly care for the new tracks they played at NE Metalfest) and maybe SYL.

Stop at Nothing was something I figured I'd hate, but once I started reading along with the lyrics, they actually weren't about chopping up your neighbor and putting him in your family's soup. It was more like biting nihilistic commentary about god, money, and government. These metalheads I know are warping me somewhat. Dying Fetus is still nothing I'd sit down and listen to for the sake of it, but I can now tolerate it when its on.

Oh man, Kotz likes Dying Fetus. This is truly a glorious day.

Now he needs some Lividity, right Agent?

I would concur, but my brain is still adjusting to listening to this Kylie stuff. Everything is all topsy-turvy now. I don't know my right from my left anymore, but I could probably tell you all the words of a couple of these songs.

Help me.

They will probably go on any best of list I will ever do during a release year.(as long as they never do another A Fine Day...)

I'm adding Cryptopsy's None So Live basically because I don't know much about grindy death stuff and this cd did it's job in introducing me to a new band/genre I would be interested in investigating further.

Speaking of further investigation, would one of you goodfellows of the horn please sell me on whether or not I should grab a couple Burnt By The Sun cd's? I heard one song from the new one and it's intriguing, but with those wacky grind bands I can't use one song as an indicator of quality.

Cryptopsy are gods. Get None So Vile and Whisper Supremacy yesterday. You'll have to decide for yourself if you like Mike DiSalvo or the incomparable Lord Worm's vocals more, but Flo Mounier's precision dessicating blast and groove perfection binds us all.

I'd take a pass on BBTS, but that's just me. I've not heard a great deal, and the little I've heard did nothing for me.
