I remember watching it back in 1998, and being a HUGE Kevin Nash mark at the time (and a mark in general), I was totally caught up in everything that went down that night, and thought the show was absolutely fantastic. Time, however, has not been kind to it and there is hardly anything on there worthwhile outside of the stellar opener and the Guerrero/Kidman match. Still, the crowd heat for the Goldberg/Nash match was off the page, and I'm certain that would be a clear reflection on the number of people who bought the show. Anybody got a clue? UYI

Placebo Effect Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 Sting vs. Hogan, the most anticipated match in WCW history (well, for the crowd at the time) drew a 1.8, and considering that by Starrcade 98 the WWF was gaining momentum, yeah, it's a pretty good number. Compare it to a year later, where the buyrate sunk to 0.32, which is one of the many embarresingly low numbers WCW did towards the end.

Let's also not forget historcal matches like Ric Flair/Eric Bischoff, and Saturn/Ernest Miller, built up by having Saturn, dressed as Santa Clause, attacking The Cat. Along with that, I remember WW III having Cat and Oono picking up a win over Saturn and Kaz Hayashi, who I don't believe had purchased Glacier's suit yet. God, I need to buy some WCW TV tapes.

The six month build-up for that match is what really made it great. Road Wild 98 up until Starrcade truly showed that the "check was in the mail" in WCW.

Being a *huge* Nash mark since 1994, I was so overjoyed that Kevin Nash destroyed Goldberg and his streak that immedietely following the PPV, I raced to my Nintendo 64 and had Kevin Nash win the World Title in WCW Revenge. I was only young, ye olde social life was still to arrive. UYI
Kardo Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 Oh, I know. It was the endless build up and hype to the Eric Bishoff/Flair match and it not going anywhere. As a first time viewer of WCW it was a great introduction after the high flying fast crusier matches.

Bischoff was locked in the Figure Four when Curt Hennig came out and gave Bischoff some brass knuckles. Bischoff nailed Flair with them and when the Referee finnally woke up from his Short "Knock-Out" Sequence he counted 3 and Bischoff sent Flair packing.
