Guest Frank Grimes Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Many fans were upset with the announcing performance of Jonathan Coachman on RAW this past Monday, as he ignored the matches and storylines and focused on jokes and making fun of Jim Ross. It turns out that Coach's lines were fed to him almost entirely by Vince McMahon who loved the three person announce team and is considering running it again this Monday. Credit: PWTorch.com All things being equal, I like the 3-man team. If they would talk more about the matches, that would be nice though.
RavishingRickRudo Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Hmph, I've suggested running a 3 man announce team for a while now to ease the transition for a replacement for JR. Of course, I would have prefered someone GOOD in that role... Stupid McMahon.
Sonic Reducer Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 What I really didn't care for was Coach inserting a comment in between Triple H's jokes. That got annoying really fast. We don't need commentary during interviews.
Steviekick Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Three man commentary isn't a bad idea. The problem is that there isn't anyone good enough to do it on Raw.
EdwardKnoxII Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I forget the match it happen on but, I just loved how JR got on Coach for not calling the match. HA JR's one to talk.
Guest Frank_Nabbit Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 RAW had a 3 man commentary back in 93, before Nitro Vince,Heenan, Rob Barnett(?) I think Savage did it in place of Barnett soon after
JHawk Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 We had Lawler, JR, and Vince up until Montreal too.
justcoz Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I'd prefer JR, Stone Cold and Bischoff personally with Coach doing the "investigative reporter" stuff backstage and Jerry Lawler going to TNA to hang with the Jarretts... LISTEN TO THE PITTSBURGH MUSIC SCENE ON LIVE 365
deancoles Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 RAW had a 3 man commentary back in 93, before Nitro Vince,Heenan, Rob Barnett(?) I think Savage did it in place of Barnett soon after Rob Bartlett was awful but at least he kept quiet during important matches like the Flair/Perfect retirement match.
razazteca Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 It was almost like listening to Lee Marshall, Scott Hudson, Larry Zybrysco.........Oh the humanity!
Vern Gagne Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I'd prefer JR, Stone Cold and Bischoff personally with Coach doing the "investigative reporter" stuff backstage and Jerry Lawler going to TNA to hang with the Jarretts... LISTEN TO THE PITTSBURGH MUSIC SCENE ON LIVE 365 I'm starting too think Vince McMahon tells Lawler to act like a dirty old man.
justcoz Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I'm starting too think Vince McMahon tells Lawler to act like a dirty old man. I'd believe it. I actually thought Lawler was quite good back in the day when he worked with Vince. He was a strong heel announcer. That carried over in his initial work on RAW with JR and the two of them had quite good chemistry. Lawler gradually became more over the top with the Attitude era, especially after puppies caught on, and he and Ross became more buddy buddy. He became less of a heel and more of a loveable dirty old man screaming for the puppies with little pink noses. It worked from 1998-2000 but quite frankly, it was old and finished, right in time for his fallout with the company over Stacy Carter. He didn't need to be brought back in my opinion. Now, even when he tries to get into a heel shtick (for instance harping on Booker T's criminal history) he just comes off as an asshole. It was somehow more amusing to watch him crack cruel Stu and Helen Hart jokes to their faces because he was a heel character and that's what heels do. Now he just comes across as racist and a jackass because he can make comments like those about Booker T and the next minute we are supposed to applaud him as he saves JR, beats up Coach, jumps up and down over Stacy's legs, etc... Toxxic Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Fire Lawler. OK Coach is by no means great, but right now I'd take Coach (with a slightly less obvious heel bias) over JR. Yes JR knows far far more about wrestling - but he doesn't display it anymore, does he? He just waffles on about the Sooners, sucks up to Austin, badmouths Bischoff and occasionally calls a move. And he doesn't even call them correctly anymore. I bet even Christian is starting to think that his reverse DDT is the REAL Unprettier.
2GOLD Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 The only way three man announcing works is if Heenan is brought in to replace Lawler.
Guest Dynamite Kido Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Funny, as I can recall Ross and Lawler by themselves don't really talk about the matches either.
The Tino Standard Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Heenan... Now HE would show those ham-and-eggers how to get it done.
OldSchoolWrestling Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 If Heenan's voice is back definately. If it isn't, bring in Cornette as the heel announcer.
RavishingRickRudo Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I will take crowd noise over JR, King, and Coach.
OldSchoolWrestling Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I will take crowd noise over JR, King, and Coach. Currently crowd noise = silence Silence>JR/King
RavishingRickRudo Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 It's way more honest and doesn't talk down to you
The Tino Standard Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Funny, as I can recall Ross and Lawler by themselves don't really talk about the matches either. It's weird, actually... If you listen to Raw, normally JR has this thing where he'll really call the first match of the night move for move (well, he normally calls about 50 percent of the moves correctly, but that's neither here nor there...). Then, as the night progresses and angles develop, he talks less and less about the action going on in the ring. It's like you can hear his commentating deteriorate within the span of 2 hrs. every week.
Guest Goodear Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Basically once the topid of 'Stone Cold' comes up ... it all drops down from there.
jester Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 I'm starting too think Vince McMahon tells Lawler to act like a dirty old man. As I recall, someone on this board mailed Lawler after a particularly brutal night of HLA, Puppies, and Lawler vigorously rubbing himself. Lawler mailed back and blasted that person, basically saying that he is in fact told to say those things. Probably by Vince. Vince apparently thinks people will forget that Trish Stratus has large breasts if Lawler doesn't remind them every two seconds.
AndrewTS Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 RAW had a 3 man commentary back in 93, before Nitro Vince,Heenan, Rob Barnett(?) I think Savage did it in place of Barnett soon after I believe it was Bartlett. Never heard him, but he's been listed on wrestlecrap for being a color commentator that wasn't in any shape or form funny. Knowing Vince's tastes, I'm shocked he hasn't tried to get Andrew Dice Clay in the booth. And I do believe that Savage at least was part of a three man team briefly, including WMIX. Vince apparently thinks people will forget that Trish Stratus has large breasts if Lawler doesn't remind them every two seconds. I'm glad Vince continues to live up to his vow to not insult the fans' intellects.
2GOLD Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 Wait...hold on...Trish has large breasts??? Really? Cause you know, I didn't hear one mention of this fact on RAW.
Guest Goodear Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 You know, I might actually get into Vince being the jerk ass heel announcer.
The Tino Standard Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 You know, I might actually get into Vince being the jerk ass heel announcer. As long as we were treated to at least one "WHATAMANEUVER!" and a "1...2... He got him! ...... oh wait, no he didn't." per show, it'd be all gravy, playboy.
Guest netslob Posted January 8, 2004 Report Posted January 8, 2004 i started to hate Lawler when he started that feud a few years back with Jake Roberts over Jake's alcoholism...well, Jerry, Jake may be an alcoholic and a crackhead, but at least he's not a CHILD-MOLESTER...can you say the same?
