Good thing I read through the whole thread before replying, because I was honestly going to post something along the lines of what FB said.

 

Is it really such a tragedy that you like a musical act that isn't a part of the genres you typically listen to? If you're going to do something as insane as like a black artist, OutKast isn't exactly an unsafe bet. They're probably among the more sophisticated urban artists out there in the mainstream today. So don't be so embarrassed that you like them, it's not like you said you own a DMX CD or something stupid like that.

 

And no offense to the OP, but how can you not know "what OutKast is" and not be in your mid-70s? You do go to school, don't you? And might I boldly assume that your area isn't that ass-backwards with the times that they haven't played any of the the group's many hit singles previous to Hey Ya and The Way You Move? Or is that really asking too much?

What!? How is that foolish to ask what OutKast's musical genre is and what a throwback is!?!? I've already explained that I don't listen to the radio and that I don't usually listen to much slang! How is it foolish then to not know? God dammit.

And yes there are a lot of black people where I live and there is a lot of black culture. And for the record no I don't ever hear it at school b/c I go to college at OU and I don't usually listen to other people. I talk to my friends and I don't go and try to eavesdrop on a bunch of people talking about rap's hottest acts.

I asked a simple question about what musical genre OutKast was in and I get about 20 people jumping down my throat giving me shit about being from Oklahoma, about not keeping up with current slang. I've never fucking heard throwback in my life. I usually here people say retro when referring to that stuff. So no I had never heard OutKast b/c I don't watch MTV and I don't listen to the radio. I had heard plenty of people talk about them when I was in High School but like I said...I usually just hung out with my friends and didn't pay attention to anyone else...and none of my friends are into that kind of music! Then I heard "Hey Ya" and liked it. And guess where I heard it!? Not on the radio and not on MTV but at the Sugar Bowl. I liked the song. I finally searched for and saw the video. Now how is it an ignorant thing to not listen to the radio and not watch MTV and not pay attention to what the other people at school are saying? How is it ignorant to do my own thing and listen to my own music??? How? Once again.....I knew who the fuck they were but I had never heard them. People talked about them like they were a hardcore rap act. I heard "Hey Ya" and it didn't sound like that to me. So I wanted to know what kind of music they played.

I would say "throwback" is a noun, one would say "a throwback" as in something is a throwback.

 

I would say "retro" is an adjective.

 

Throwback as an adjective IS slang, but not exactly complicated slang.

 

If you really want to know what Outkast is, go buy Stankonia from a Used CD store. I'm sure plenty of people bought it after they saw the video for "Mrs. Jackson" the first time, and were expecting everything like that.
