The OAO Super Bowl Thread

Recommended Posts

I have some Super Bowl questions...

The 1985 Bears. Everyone lists them as one of the all-time greatest teams ever.

How is it that they only won that single Super Bowl? Were they broken up right

after? And how did the 46 defense get its name? What was so significant about it?

The defense is named after former Bears safety Doug Plank who wore #46 when Buddy Ryan first started using the defense in 1981. This really isn't the best explanation of it but the idea is moving the strong safety up from the secondary to give the defense an eight man front, leaving two corners and one free safety in the secondary. The purpose of the 46 defense is to get maximum pressure on the quarterback. It really isn't used exclusively because few teams ever have had the defensive talent the '85 Bears had as its a pretty big risk to always leave only three defensive backs out there and have your corners always in man-to-man coverage. It got exposed by Dan Marino and the Dolphins that year in the Bears only loss and it would have been interesting to see a rematch of them in the Super Bowl but Miami got upset by the Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

As for why they didn't win another is that they were slowly broken up soon after including letting Wilbur Marshall go immediately following the '85 season as the Bears owner didn't like spending money. They did actually have homefield in the playoffs in 1988 but that team overachieved and didn't have nearly the talent of the '85 team. They lost to the 49ers 28-3 in the NFC Championship game.

Edit: Forgot about the '86 Bears who went 14-2 and actually gave up fewer points than the '85 team but they were upset in the divisional playoffs by the Redskins. That's part of the reason why the Bears only won one Super Bowl because the NFC was loaded in the 80s.

In case people forget, the Pats DO have a running game in Antowain Smith. Guy ran for 1,000+ yards and 12 TD's in 2001 and 980+ yards on 35 less carries last year. Also the Pats tend to run the ball 25-30 times per game so it's not like the Patriots only pass. Do they depend on the pass? Sure but to say they have absolutely NO running game is a misjudgement.

I saw the Ad for the "Game Before the Game" thing at Wal Mart yesterday, and they hyped up that the winner of the video game matchup is 8-0 in the real thing so keep an eye out on that.

I got all my food for my party too. Chicken wings (raw so I can put my own sauce on them), chicken tenders, blue cheese dressing, doritos (Guacamole and 4 Cheese), salsa (medium) and Diet Pepsi (DIET?).

I didn't even go this nuts for Super Bowl XXXV when the Ravens were playing.

Does anyone here expect the Panter's to win? I know it could happen but other then 3 or 4 of turnovers by the Pats is there anyway they can win this game?

Absolutely. Delhomme is a MUCH better QB than anybody is giving him credit for, their receiving corps is horribly underrated, Davis should be healthy, and their D is actually REALLY good. The Pats definitely can't run and the Panthers showed what they can do to a passing game.

I actually see a Panthers win 20-14.

The rushing point has been made already, but as far as Carolina's pass defense, look who they played: Quincy Carter, shaky, with no great receivers (Terry Glenn is way too inconsistent). Marc Bulger, who is seriously INT prone, but possibly could have won that game if Martz had a spine, and the Eagles receiving corps, who can lose a game by themselves via drops and bad routes.

And I hope you aren't discounting NE's pass defense, who had the Great Peyton Manning shaking his head in disbelief. If Stephen Davis is stuffed, Delhomme will have to prove that he's as good as you think he is. 100 yards and 9 completions isn't going to cut it here.

Its probably just as well..

Im trying to stay til 4:30 am for SUPER BOWL XXXV highlights on the NFL Network. They've shown every other game at least twice since last night, but they haven't shown XXXV yet (even skipping from XXXIV to XXXVI once). Right now they are at the first dallas/buffalo game.

I hate Numerals just for the fact for Super Bowsl, You have to think for a second what game that was unless it was memorable

so only 21 year olds can it then?

I don't think anyone should use it. Along with the word "stoked". They are both vile.

Sadly, I'm almost thirty and yet "stoked" slips into my regular vernacular pretty often. It's a carryover from the surfer/stoner halcyon days (daze?) of my youth. So, I'll have to agree on "banging" being inexcusable, but don't lump "stoked" in with that riffraff.

Banging should only be used in the context of sexual intercourse.

"Where were you last night?"

"My place, banging your girlfriend!"

"Oh, cool. she must be stoked, she usually calls out your name when we're together..."

To violently yank this back on topic:

Have those inane propositions come out yet? Like "Will the total number of passing yards of Jake Delhomme be more or less than the total number of points scored during [insert NBA game here]?"

Nobody passed on Carolina all year long.

And you ignore two key points:

1) They beat St. Louis IN ST.LOUIS. NOBODY could do that. And they did WITHOUT Davis, for the most part.

2) They beat the Eagles IN PHILLY. No small feat there. True, McNabb is one brutally overrated QB (and, to defend Rush's time on ESPN, only ONE guy on the ESPN set picked the Pats to make the Super Bowl. That guy was Rush Limbaugh), but they pulled it off.

And I hope you aren't discounting NE's pass defense, who had the Great Peyton Manning shaking his head in disbelief.

The Pats are terrific defensively, no argument. But really bad weather, a Titans team with no real running game, and Manning who can get rattled when pressured helped their cause. And, honestly, as bad as Indy played, they STILL had a shot at the end. FG after FG won't win it.

If Stephen Davis is stuffed, Delhomme will have to prove that he's as good as you think he is.  100 yards and 9 completions isn't going to cut it here.

It might well cut it. The Pats, good as they are, aren't exactly a HIGH-POWERED offense.

If Davis gets stuffed, they'll run Foster a ton. They don't abandon their game plan.

If the Pats get a sizeable lead, then yes, Carolina is in DEEP trouble.

Yeah, I think that might go both ways. If the score is 21-7 late in the third, the trailing team has quite a task in front of them.

Bleh, the two week waiting period blows

Things are picking up in Houston now though. In my sports econ class we're discussing the effect of the Superbowl on the economy both locally for Houston and nationally (you'd be amazed how many connections you could draw to it)

Also, this pic was on cnnsi.com

Well, if the Rams lost, and they were playing the Panthers, I'd say it's a foregone conclusion that Carolina absolutely fucking won.

Jesus Christ, that shit is tired. One team wins and one team loses, and there is no "he lost it, so they didn't win it." Bullshit. Martz lost and Carolina won. You can't have two fucking losers in a football game.

My bad.

I missed Mike Martz not stopping a long pass pay in 2OT. Heck, if they have HIM playing CB, they deserved to lose.

How whiny can fans be?

Ricky Manning Jr is talking about how after the Panthers win the SuperBowl he's going over to Japan for endorsements or something and he's also telling people the game aint gonna be nothing, so go to his website Manning24.com

I haven't been to the website and I probably won't be he's being extremely cocky and seems more into making himself out than focsing on the game.
