Mik 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2004 http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page3/ Starts off today with a countdown of the 100 greatest Simpsons moments, 25 a day, as well as a 64 show Page 2 type bracket to determine the best show on TV. I love Page 2, is this overkill? It's a different subject matter, so maybe not. An entertainment page on ESPN.com might be weird, but it's looking pretty decent so far. sfaJack 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2004 Good lord. Just when I thought ESPN couldn't get more ridiculous, they have to go and prove me wrong.

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted January 20, 2004 Ugh.... I've had this fear that ESPN was going to try and branch out from sports and that's exactly what their doing. How long until Sportscenter isn't about sports?
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2004 I'm waiting until ESPN's Page 4 puts a focus on Election 2004...
MrRant 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2004 Just like every other channel that starts out as a niche channel... eventually they want to be more than what they are.
Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I don't understand why this is bad? I think it's pretty nice.
Guest ToddRoyal Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Why it's bad? Because it continues ESPN's recent trend of eliminating actual sports programming. Just like MTV 10 years ago, ESPN is moving further away from what brought them to the dance. Talk shows like PTI and Around the Horn were the first step, but not too bad, as they actually dealt with REAL sports stories. Then we got "sports-based reality TV shows" like Beg, Borrow & Deal, that Outdoor Challenge, Streetball, and the upcoming SC Anchor show- all vaguely "sports related" at best. Then it was "Original Entertainment" like Playmakers. Actual coverage of sports decreases with every new show and venture like this. I just hope 5 years from now, ESPN isn't ten hours of "Beg Borrow & Deal" and "Playmakers VII" re-runs, with a baseball game airing at 2:30 in the morning, with a story about the trading deadline buried under Simpsons retrospectives online... fazzle 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 I just hope 5 years from now, ESPN isn't ten hours of "Beg Borrow & Deal" I don't think you have to worry much about that. This past season ESPN ended up airing first run episodes at 1 AM or so on ESPN 2. It made it a bitch to find them. So, I don't think there will be a third season. Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Oh, yeah .. a 3rd page on ESPN.com is totally stealing all the spotlight and time away from sports. Uh huh. Right.

JHawk 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Well, ESPN DOES stand for the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. At least it used to. Bingo. So the next time we hear that they won't put pro wrestling back on ESPN because it's not a real sport, we can use that, right?
Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2004 Oh, yeah .. a 3rd page on ESPN.com is totally stealing all the spotlight and time away from sports. Uh huh. Right. It's not that, it's what it might turn into. The example of MTV is a little apocalyptic, but not too far off. They were playing music videos constantly, then they started doing some music-themed game shows. Then they started things like "The Real World" and "Road Rules" that have nothing to do with music videos, continued that with shows like "Undressed" and the like, and now you're hard-pressed to find any music videos on MTV at all. I don't think ESPN will go down that road, but with their "original programming," the signs for a comparison are indeed on the wall.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2004 Well, ESPN DOES stand for the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. At least it used to. Which is why I wish ESPN2 would carry drum and bugle corps during the summer months in which they have nothing better to show than Baseball Tonight reruns and stupid questionable sports. So they should just go for the entertainment factor.

I don't want it to turn into MTV, but theres not much you can show when there are no sports to cover. I actually like some of the original programming they have. I don't think you have anything to worry about, I don't believe ESPN will ever turn as bad as MTV, which is unwatchable. Not one program they air is worth a shit.
