Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted February 15, 2004 I watch alot of The Discovery Channel and The History Channel and after watching a program today on Alcatraz I started to wonder why they don't renovate it enough where its all fixxed up but still has its cold and isolated feel, then reopen it. Basically if you do away with the death penalty and place people like Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Charles Manson, etc in there it might make people think twice about comitting such brutal crimes. Basically make it the nation's prison for the worst of the worst. With today's technology they could make it so escape is impossible. I just think its still got that feel to it where nobody ever wants to spend their life there(and that's what it would be, life terms only) and it should be reopened. Thoughts? Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted February 16, 2004 The types of people I gave examples of that would go there give up their Civil Rights as soon as they commit those kinds of crimes. The Death Penalty is far too easy as they don't truly have to suffer. The thought of getting 50+ years in Alcatraz might sway people to solve their problems differently than mass murder and what have you. I mean who really cares about the rights of the absolute filth criminals?

Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted February 16, 2004 Once again, as soon as you go out on a mass murder or you kidnap, rape and kill a child, or something along those lines the Bill of Rights and Constitution should no longer be a shield for you to use. Why would we want to protect the rights of somebody who has nothing but ill intentions on their mind for society. I think Alcatraz would be the greatest way of keeping those types from ever getting back into society.

I'm in favor of a high speed catapult into a brick wall as Carlin suggests. Instant replay and Slo-Mo.

There already is a super prison though, that one that John Gotti and the Unibomber were sent to. Making it Alcatraz would just make the whole thing needlessly romantic, I think. Guest SideFXs Report post Posted February 16, 2004 RFK shut it down in 1963, because it was considered cruel and unusual punishment. I toured it in 1992. It was creepy. Just step into one of the solitary confinement rooms, situated two stories below the "Birdman" It was damp and cold and the wind never stopped. It was 20 degrees warmer as soon as you got back to pier 39. If anyone goes, be prepared and bring a coat and walking shoes; It’s a long hike from the boat to the main facility. Oh, and I didn’t leave with a warm fuzzy feeling.

The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I think the greatest story I ever heard about Alcatraz was that guy who came *this close* to busting out. He got out of the prison, into the freezing, shark-infested waters (or so I've heard) and swam all the way to the mainland of San Fransisco. Once there, he collapsed of exhaustion, and when he woke up, he was surrounded by cops. Gold.

The Metal Maniac 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I think so... In any event, the phrase "freezing, shark-infested waters" when referring to Alcatraz seems to sound familiar to me, but I'm honestly not sure.

He made it to a near-by small island reef and hid in there for 2 days. After 2 days though he was so cold and freezing and torn up from crabs eating on him that he swam back over to Alcatraz and gave himself up. He would have died had he not. The guards were told to speak as if there were sharks near there but none were ever spotted.
Downhome 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I say don't just put them in prison, and don't just shoot them. I say that we should use them to see what happens in "what if" cases. Like what if we tied one to a rocket, and launced it into orbit? What if we cut off as many pieces of the guy as we can, just to find out how much we could sever before they die. That sort of thing. Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted February 17, 2004 all of those lead to death shortly after the crime though. You want them to live a long, yet absolutely miserable life. Alcatraz is the ideal place for that to take place. You you may laugh but you could do even other cruel things such as if they ever get up into an officers face tie them down and give them major paper cuts(using a manilla envelope) on the webbing inbetween each toe. Whenever they take even the smallest of steps it'll hurt like hell yet its one of those things that won't leave them unconcious or anything. We could learn alot from old Viet-Kon methods of jailing and torture for use on the scummiest of criminals

Guest cobainwasmurdered Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I hear that Canadian prisons are a great alternative to being homeless/poor and have more shit in them than the cells we put Enron execs in. Is this true or am I being lied to? It seems kind of hard to imagine, since the principle of prisons is to "omg make them rot in hell for 50 years until they go to hell anyway, that human filth we very closely resemble THEM~!". you've heard wrong. I have friends in prison. it's no cake walk. it's just as bad as American jails. trust me.
