Guest Gatornibs Report post Posted February 17, 2004 The Yankees have signed Greg Maddux according to a TV Station in New York. ESPN reported it as "Breaking News" at 11:35pm EST at the bottom of the screen during Sportscenter!
Bored 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 It's reported he is about to sign although it's far from official. At any rate I'm here to talk people off the ledge. Greg Maddux was only a slightly above average pitcher last year. He had his worst season in 16 years since his rookie year. He's going to be 38 years old. Greg Maddux is not Greg Maddux anymore. That being said he does make a better 5th starter than Jon Lieber.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I'd say it's a waste of money if everyone else didn't think the Yankees pitching staff was so bad. I don't see what's bad about it. Barring another Brown injury...I like their staff already.

Der Kommissar 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I am kind of liking all of these insane Yankees' signings/trades. At least it will be REAL entertaining should they crash and burn, which I have the strangest feeling might just happen.

Barring another Brown injury...I like their staff already. The problem is they have is that the quality falls off a cliff after the first five. If they suffer a couple injuries in that staff, they'll have real problems.

Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I just feel bad for teams like the Padres and Tigers who could have actually used him. Yankees don't need him, they just don't want anybody else having him and that's why baseball sucks right now. Salary cap eliminates stuff like that.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 This Just In: The NY Yankees have bought You.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I beg to differ. The Yankees actually did need him, for reasons stated above. If they didn't make a move, their 6th starter would be Jorge DePaula. Now they have some breathing room.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I can't hear the baseball sucks argument after last post season. I just...can't...hear it. It's like...I know there is bitching about baseball sucking going on...but it's so faint...I...can't...hear...it.
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted February 17, 2004 Well I officially don't give a fuck about baseball. It's bad enough with the Yankees overpaying players and retooling the team completely if tehy don't win a WS, but when you're signing players just so other teams can't have them there's a serious problem with the sport. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted February 17, 2004 . Yankees don't need him, they just don't want anybody else having him and that's why baseball sucks right now Because all those other teams WANT the competition to get good players. Anyway, I will admit that this has gotten fucking absurd.

Anyway, I will admit that this has gotten fucking absurd. The only teams interested in him were The Cubs(which was more so he could retire with the team he started with...good publicity and story), the Padres, and the Tigers...how does that hurt the Yankees? I'm glad to see you're finally looking through pinstripeless glasses though and realise how shitty this is making it. Steinbrenner should just start his own NY/NJ based league because he's killing the competitive balance all together.
BX 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 Nothing will please me greater this year then to see the Yankees fall short of the title. Not even 40 lusty virgins. Not even a PDA. Not even a steak and caviar gordita.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I gotta agree with the frontpage of the local paper: Just when you were starting to get excited about baseball again, there go the New York Yankees. [...] Arena football, anyone? However, according to ESPN, Cashman has denied involvement with Maddux.

The only teams interested in him were The Cubs(which was more so he could retire with the team he started with...good publicity and story), the Padres, and the Tigers...how does that hurt the Yankees? How doesn't it? As Florida showed us, any of those teams could threaten the Yankees.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 Wow. Check out this post from FrigidSoul, on November the 29th..... I hope the Yankees pay Greg Maddux $10mill to join them because Bartolo is too fat to make such a long move from Chicago to NY and Milwood wants to be the ace of whatever team he's on. Then I hope Pettite goes to Houston. Anglesault, DePaula is a minor league prospect.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I'm not mocking you with that. I just found it interesting. I've been searching for something I said about Maddux earlier, which I found here. Yes, Maddux WILL play in the American League if that's where the offer comes from.

Yes, Maddux WILL play in the American League if that's where the offer comes from. hey, like I said, I've finally come to terms with the fact that this sport is dominated by money and cash wins 80% of the time. You don't need a good front office or a good farm system developement...just money and a TV so you can see who ESPN is deaming great. Love the sport, hate the league, no longer interested in MLB games because of all of this.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 Its silly to write off the season yet. The Yankees are good, but FAR from a sure thing. Their season really depends on injuries. In the meantime, I've got 162 games (maybe more) of Phillies baseball to look forward to. No team plays the Yankees more than 18 times. So really, the only time the Yankees can kill your enjoyment is in the playoffs. Go out and enjoy the games.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK This can't happen. This just can't happen. Go to the Cubs Maddux. Go to the Cubs. Don't do this to me
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I'm too disgusted with how its run to watch the games. I'll watch Spring Training to see the rookies who still love the game for the game. After that I'll watch the local high school teams and the over 30 league teams.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 Give me a break. This is called the open market. You can earn as much money as you can, and spend as much as you want. There is nothing preventing the other 29 teams from doing what the Yankees have done. NOTHING. The Yankees have built this team fair and square. I hate them, but I applaud them. bob_barron 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 I don't know if I can handle seeing Maddux in a Yankees hat. I almost vomited seeing Glavine in a Mets cap. Maddux is my favourite baseball player ever. I can't bare to see him sign with the team I hate so much
