God damn it's cold!

Sucks to be me and anyone else living here.

Complete whiteout conditions have prompted Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to declare a state of emergency Thursday with Atlantic Canada in the midst of its worst storm of the winter.

Environment Canada has issued blizzard warnings for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and parts of Newfoundland. Near-zero visibility is expected as winds gust up to 100 kilometres an hour. The forecast is calling for 25 to 50 centimetres of snow.

Ernest Fage, Nova Scotia's minister responsible for the Emergency Measures Act, declared a provincial state of emergency as of 8:30 a.m.

“The snow storm has closed most major highways creating dangerous conditions for the public and severely restricting emergency response across the province,” Mr. Fage said. “The public is to stay indoors and off the roads so emergency services can respond to the storm when it is safe to do so.

“Public safety must be our No. 1 concern.”

PEI declared a state of emergency early Thursday afternoon and the Confederation Bridge was shut to all traffic

The storm had knocked out power to 12,000 Island residences and 2,000 Nova Scotian homes by mid-afternoon.

In some parts of Nova Scotia, snowplow operators were being pulled off the road as drifts became unmanageable. Most highways were deemed too treacherous for travel, and several were closed.

Police in Halifax are also off the road, responding only to emergency calls that involved a life-threatening situation.

All non-essential workers were told to stay home, and most businesses didn't open.

There are also concerns about flooding, with the winds expected to produce high tides at 3.3 metres, which could result in storm surges of up to 1.8 metres.

Schools were closed across Nova Scotia and in parts of PEI and New Brunswick.

The storm has also forced flight cancellations at Halifax International airport and delayed others at Moncton airport.

Several outdoor events at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown have also been called off.

In September, Hurricane Juan slammed the province, downing thousands of trees and power lines and leaving more than 300,000 Nova Scotia without power.

On Monday we had a two hour delay because of wintery conditions.

Today, it hit 60 and I'm wearing shorts.

I live in NC.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

Sandman, you and I live in the state with the most fucked up weather patterns ever... if you can even call them patterns.

I live in NC and the only thing I've gotten in my county this season is sleet (which I was out of school for 4 days and I've had maybe 4 two-hour delays this semester). I haven't had just snow so far this year, just a mix at best.

Ah, to live in Florida. Actually, Naples has been going through a cold front the past few days, with temperatures getting as low as FORTY!

...and then it went into the upper 60s this afternoon.

On the plus side, this meant that two exams I was going to fail today are post-poned for at least a week, as classes are already cancelled tommorrow, and then we're on Febuary Break.

If I open my basement door, it's an odd sight, because the snow is literally about waist high, but it just sits there.

No one has left the house at all today, and the prospect of shovelling it tommorrow, when it's supposed to snow AGAIN, is making me cold already.

You know it's snowing bad when you can't even see if it's snowing outside because the windows of your home are COVERED in snow.

Oh, and Nabius...where do you live? Nova Scotia or PEI?

A guy I talk to from NYC on AIM said we got the storm they were supposed to get. Bastards.

Yeah, if it was 50 miles to the west, NYC would have gotten 3-6 inches, western LI would have gotten 6-10, and eastern LI (east of the Hamptons - who got about 4-7 inches) would have gotten 10-16.

My mother's from Cape Breton, though I'm not, and currently reside outside of Halifax.

It's a good thing you're from the other side of the island though...otherwise, I bet you 5 bucks my mom could've found a common relative/family friend somewhere between us.

Yeah, you all think I'm kidding, but I once noticed that my history teacher had a St. FX ring (For the unaware, It's a university about 2 hours from Cape Breton, like you know where Cape Breton is anyway).

I told my mom his name, and the next day, she told me that he was somehow distantly related to me.

It's creepy shit man. Damned Capers.

Yeah, our weather patterns are pretty fucked up down here. I was shocked when I went out last night and saw the temperature was 65 degrees. Damn wish it'd stay like that (I'm sick and tired of the cold and snow)

I can't remember the last time it was above freezing here in SLC. We have highs of, like, 22F. Break out the summer clothes, that's HOTT.

In other words, the summer should let us see highs of 500F. I'm excited. So excited that I'm leaving.
