JoeDirt Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 I just read the other day that in 1994, about a week before the Royal Rumble, the WWF held a special 30-man Royal Rumble at an MSG house show, a match that Owen Hart won. Did the WWF do anything like this any other times? Was it just a big "tuneup" for how the match would go down a week later? (Aside from Owen winning it, of course). Was it to give Owen a push building to his Wrestlemania match with Bret, that would take place at MSG?
Matt Young Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 I read in Inside Wrestling sometime between the November 9, 1997, and March 29, 1998 (HBK's last title reign before retiring) that the Brooklyn Brawler of all people won an MSG battle royal and got a title shot at the Garden, a match which he nearly won. Of course, considering the source of the information, it could all be one big fabrication.
Zack Malibu Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 I read in Inside Wrestling sometime between the November 9, 1997, and March 29, 1998 (HBK's last title reign before retiring) that the Brooklyn Brawler of all people won an MSG battle royal and got a title shot at the Garden, a match which he nearly won. That was true, I was getting the Observer around that time and Meltzer said that in the ensuing title match, Michaels worked his ass off and wound up taking Brawler to an above average (I swear it was listed as ***1/4) match.
JoeDirt Posted February 23, 2004 Author Report Posted February 23, 2004 Quite true. He won a battle royal in September and got a shot in November: "The Brooklyn Brawler won a 20-man battle royal to earn a world title shot during the November 15th MSG event; other participants included: Los Boricuas, DOA, the Truth Commission, Brian Christopher, Scott Taylor, the Headbangers, and the New Blackjacks, among others." "WWF World Champion Shawn Michaels pinned the Brooklyn Brawler at the 15 minute mark with the superkick after interference from Chyna and distraction from Triple H." I guess the weird thing about the Owen in 1994 thing is that it was an actual Royal Rumble...not a battle royal, which they had all the time.
MillenniumMan831 Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 Weird to know that a face Owen would win the MSG Rumble.
JoeDirt Posted February 23, 2004 Author Report Posted February 23, 2004 Weird to know that a face Owen would win the MSG Rumble. No kidding. Here's how it happened, according to Cawthon's site: "Owen Hart won a 30-man Royal Rumble match at 1:10:17 by last eliminating Fatu; the last four men in the ring were Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Fatu, and Owen; Michaels eliminated Bret; Owen eliminated Michaels after Razor Ramon came ringside to distract HBK; order of entry: Diesel, Mo, Butch, the 1-2-3 Kid (the Kid suffered a leg injury from his elimination which caused him to miss the PPV Rumble), Scott Steiner, Iron Mike Sharpe, Samu, Bob Backlund, Jeff Jarrett, Virgil, Bam Bam Bigelow, Randy Savage, Adam Bomb, Sgt. Slaughter, Crush, Mabel, Jim Powers, Bastion Booger, Luke, Owen Hart, Rick Martel, Bret Hart, IRS, Johnny Polo, Scott Putski, Fatu, Marty Jannetty, Bart Gunn, Shawn Michaels, and Doink the Clown; the final four men in the ring were Shawn Michaels, Bret, Owen, and Samu; Bret was eliminated after Fatu returned ringside; Michaels was eliminated after Razor Ramon came ringside; after the bout, Bret returned ringside to fight off the Headshrinkers and celebrate Owen's victory." Now if you substitute Luger in for Owen, and you have the same final four as the 94 Rumble, IIRC.
Guest Choken One Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 Doink was #30? Wow. It was FRICKING house show...Shoulda put Shawn and Owen #1 and #2 instead... Speaking of Rumbles...I remember a house show I went to that had a 40 MAN battle royal...I believe Tatanka won it.

Because there's a match on Bashed in the USA with Tatanka winning a battle royal by dumping IRS and the Beverly Brothers at the end. And by God, Tom Stone was robbed!
Guest Your Olympic Hero Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 I think everyone is ignoring the big problem in this "rumble": FATU WAS THE LAST MAN ELIMINATED Also, the Brawler sounded like the best challenger possible out of those people listed in the battle royal.

Frankie Williams Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 I was at that MSG Runble show. The funny thing about it is that the top rope broke towards the end and the ref had to jump into the ring and hold it up.
DCMaximo Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 *imagines a happier planet where "Iron" Mike Sharpe had won that Royal Rumble"*
Guest Your Olympic Hero Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 *imagines a happier planet where "Iron" Mike Sharpe had won that Royal Rumble"* He would piledrive his way through the competition without his move ever getting reversed.

The funny thing about it is that the top rope broke towards the end and the ref had to jump into the ring and hold it up. Hate to correct you but it was the middle rope. (Has a handheld copy) Diesel got some nice babyface heat as usual by dumping like every jobber until Scott Steiner entered. When Diesel was gone Crush took over. The show also hosted the 1-2-3 Jannetty/Quebecers rematch where the Quebecers won the titles back. Also have it and its a good match I think.
Jebus Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 Famous show here... Owen wins House Show Royal Rumble Quebecers win tag tirles from Kid and Jannetty Kid and Ludvig Borga suffer injuries (Borga's last WWF Appearance)

Owen wins House Show Royal Rumble Quebecers win tag tirles from Kid and Jannetty Kid and Ludvig Borga suffer injuries (Borga's last WWF Appearance) What bothers me is The Kids injury was from his elimination...and it wasn't an "Ouch hes hurt" elimination. Diesel simply pushed him off the top rope to the floor. The Kid has done more serious bumps where he goes SLAP! on the padding.

The SLAP! on the padding bumps were pretty crazy but mostly injury-free...it's funny, the Rumble elimination didn't look bad at all but he simply lands on his leg and fucks it up!
Frankie Williams Posted February 25, 2004 Report Posted February 25, 2004 Hate to correct you but it was the middle rope. (Has a handheld copy) Im glad you corrected me. It was a long time ago. I KNEW a rope broke, but I was wrong as to which one. Thanks.
