Guest Choken One Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Has ANY Music band gotten BETTER after the death of a Lead Singer?
Guest Choken One Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Personally, I don't think the band really changed much which is why they maintained thier success...
Guest El Satanico Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Bon Scott was the better lead singer, but they got the majority of their success and most popular songs with Brian Johnson.
Slayer Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 I can't even think of many bands who actually had lead singers die on them, much less be able to think about the effects of it
Guest Choken One Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 The Doors AC/DC Drowning Pool are the first to come my mind...I'm sure there others...
Youth N Asia Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 I know I might be in the minority...but I like the Foo Fighters much better than Nirvana
Slayer Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 The Doors AC/DC Drowning Pool AC/DC is obvious.. that was the only one I could think of when I just saw the thread title I didn't like DP before that dude kicked off and I doubt I'll care about them with the new guy Did the Doors actually replace Morrison? If so, they don't count in this discussion
Guest Choken One Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 yes they did...i can't remember his name though
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Even though I don't think Sabbath got any better, I'd just to take this time to remind everyone that... DIO > OZZY
justsoyouknow Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Even though I don't think Sabbath got any better, I'd just to take this time to remind everyone that... DIO > OZZY Ozzy's not dead...
Jebus Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 I know I might be in the minority...but I like the Foo Fighters much better than Nirvana You're not the only one... I like both (and own their stuff as well) but, when asked of my favorite bands, The Foo Fighters is always mentioned by me and not Nirvana.

Henry Spencer Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 If I remember correctly, the Doors didn't replace Morrison. They just recorded an album with no singer.
The Czech Republic Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 If we count Syd Barrett's figurative mental death, Pink Floyd by leaps and bounds.
The Amazing Rando Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Joy Division released most of their albums after the death of their lead singer, but everything they released with vocals was recorded before Ian Curtis died, so I wouldn't say they got better, but they were certainly more well known after his death than before (at least in the United States). EDIT: There is a webpage called ElvisPelvis.com that contains the Dead Musician Directory...and has a very complete and accurate collection of news stories surrounding just about EVERY music-related death going back since the 50s it would seem.
1234-5678 Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 If I remember correctly, the Doors didn't replace Morrison. They just recorded an album with no singer. They recorded two albums, "Other Voices" and "Full Circle" with keyboard player Ray Manzarek and guitar player Robby Krieger handling the vocals. Both were pretty much commercial failures. Recently, however, Manzarek, Krieger, a new drummer (Densmore won't have any part of it) and the Cult's Ian Astbury have toured under the name "21st Century Doors" performing old material and one new song. They are supposed to release an album sometime this year I believe.
spiny norman Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Bon Scott >>>>>>>>>>>> Brian Johnson. There's no argument in my mind, and I prefer their earlier stuff. I can't think of anyone who improved with the death of the lead singer. I can't think of many who improved with a death in the band period.
Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 As far as creating intrigue and legend in the underground of Metal, Mayhem is the top of the pops. The story is great if for no other reason then the wonderful irony of their singer's stage name...Dead. Then he fulfilled the prophecy by eating a shotgun. As tribute the band did no less than eat part of his brain in a stew (the guitarist was the first to find him, he too pictures, part of the brain, and skull chunks to be made into jewelry), and use pictures of his corpse as the cover of one of their cd's. The whole thing along with all the intrigue in the 'scene' at the time created a 'gimmick' that is depraved, and livable. Not to mention the band makes some of the most incredible music out there. Their guitarist got stabbed 23 times by a cohort in said 'scene' but that's for another thread....
The Ghost of bps21 Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Nirvana. Thank God that noise stopped.
Vern Gagne Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 The Doors released an album of Jim Morrison reading poetry while the other members played new music. Brian Johnson is good. Bon Scott is great. AC/DC just had more of a rawness when Scott was still singing.
1234-5678 Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 The Doors released an album of Jim Morrison reading poetry while the other members played new music. Very good album too. Accomplishes their goal of telling a story, and of Morrison coming across as a legitimate poet like he always wanted.
converge241 Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 an example people may use is mother love bone to pearl jam i liked MLB better but its one out there
Guest Deviant Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 I'm not a fan of either, but I prefer Foo Fighters to Nirvana. And despite only hearing Step Up and a few brief clips by Drowning Pool, I like the new guy's voice better than Dave's. As long as Jason can do the same thing live, I'm happy. I hate bands that need the studio and post-recording mixing to sound good.
C Dubya 04 Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Skynard's original lead singer died in a plane crash. The band replaced him with his brother who looked and sounded the same. I guess that's not really a death that lead to the band getting better, but more of a death that didn't really change a damn thing.
