The TSM Classic Match of The Day Thread

Recommended Posts

Guest Choken One

Here's another edition of The TSM Classic Match of The Day(the 3/22 Edition)...

This, for those who missed the first edition(Jack Vs Triple H-Rumble 2000), is a place where WRESTLING fans can dicuss classic matches and examine and debate our thoughts on that particular match in question.

Today's Edition will focus on a very famous Match between The Former Two Time Tag Team Champion, Bret Hart whom recently left the tag scenes PERMANTLY for his run at the Single ranks going head to head against one of the Companies greatest performers and perhaps argueably, the greatest I.C Champion ever, Mr. Perfect.

The outcome of the match was not in question, it was widely known, Bret was being groomed for a big singles run and Perfect, was working through a crippling back injury.

With a Severe back injury, Perfect sucked it up and was able to deliver a very good match, The flake system for the match has been widely different...some claim its a ****1/2 match, while some believe *** is the highest possible compliment for this match.

We won't argue how or if the "Re-Match" at King of the Ring 1993 was a better match because that isn't the purpose of this thread.

We will debate and dicuss THIS match.

Talk about what your feelings of the match are, from a work-rate perpective, from a Mark standpoint, what it's weakness's are, etc.

Great match. I like their KOTR93 match a bit better, but the heat for this one was crazy...big mark out moment when Perfect taps and Piper goes nuts.

Where can I find the match on tape/DVD? I haven't seen it, just the KotR match.

EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't see the subtitle saying Summerslam '91.

My favorite match of all time. Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect are two of my all time faves and for some reason, I just LOVE this match. Everything clicks for me. The tearing of Perfect's outfit, the spinning across the ring bumps, the falling off the top onto Bret for an awesome pin, even the immediate tap out, which works fine in my opinion since Perfects back was legitimatly fucked. Great, great match that brought Bret up to another level. *****

I must be thinking of some one else...

back to the topic

Lets.

I remember this match having some shoddy selling by Bret and I didn't enjoy the ending due to the quick tap. But my mind is shot and I can't really remember. I'll probably re-watch tomorrow.

I thought the quick tap made the Sharpshooter more effective and besides...i don't think it hurt the match at all.

My favorite Mr. Perfect moment is the promo with Bret Hart before thier KOR 1993 classic in which they argued that "my dad can beat your dad" and Perfect offered a handshake and then took it away.

As for the two matchs, the 91 summerslam match rocks, but I perfer the KOR classic.

This was the first match that I really appreciated for the wrestling, I was 9 at the time - but it was the first time I'd ever seen a match and REALLY appreciated and realised that a story can be told in the ring beyond: Superstar gets beat up, nearly loses but due to the power of his fans "hulks up" and defies all odds. I'm gonna have to watch this one again soon, cos I don't think I've seen it since - I'd like to see how it measures up to a 21 year old me. But at the time it was my favourite match ever.

I have this match on a cheap "best of summerslam" video I got at kmart in 1994. Those who are jumping up wanting thi stape, don't this best of also features Undertaker vs Kamala from 92, Razor Ramon vs Ted Dibiase from 93 and Lex Luger vs Yokozuna from 93. and the bret-perfect match is clipped a bit. I rented summerslam 91 2 years ago to see the whole match and it's really good. I enjoyed it live in 91 (and it made me a big bret fan) and it's still good now. the reversal by bret into the sharpshooter was cool. Especially as the crowd popped as he countered. The sharpshooter had just been introduced but the smart msg crowd was right on top of everything. That was the biggest pop of that night, besides LOD's for winning the tag belts and Virgil for upsetting Dibiase for the million $ belt.

almost forgot, Heenan's commentary is gold during this match. Making fun of piper, bret, monsoon and the fans.

Heenan: I heard a rumor that when Piper was a kid, his parents ran away from him

Monsoon: Would you stop?

Heenan: Piper would come home from school and find out that his parents had moved

(bret had bealed perfect by his hair and monsson defended it cuz Perfect did the same earlier)

Heenan: You can't pull Bret Hart's hair

Piper: Why?

Heenan: Cuz you'd get too many oil slicks on your hands

(Shot of Stu and Helen Hart looking concerned)

Heenan: You know why they're concerned, they snuck in, they're scared the usher will come

(Bret punches The Coach off the apron)

Heenan: He hit The Coach, a man wearing glasses

Bret and Perfect had both beaten jobbers with many different finishers leading to this match, as a way of showing that both men had many ways to win

Bret- Sharpshooter/2nd rope Elbow

Perfect- Perfect plex + Whatever i can't recall

I think Perfect was beating jobbers by CO in 2 mins squashes because he couldn't bump with his bad back

I would rate the match itself about ***3/4. But that doesn't tell the whole story on this one. Don't let the match rating I gave fool you. Watching this match is WAY more entertaining than a regular ***3/4 match. My reasoning for this was mentioned earlier in the thread as I feel Heenan was on the money in this match on commentary. Also, a hot MSG crowd added to the mix and you have a VERY entertaining match on your hands. One of my all time favorite WWF matches.......

I remember this match having some shoddy selling by Bret and I didn't enjoy the ending due to the quick tap.

Just about the tap: Hennig literally couldn't handle taking the sharpshooter cause of his back. Thus the fast tap.

Also, remember how hard Bret had it cinched in. Hennig was bent so far back it almost looked like the old Liontamer.

I loved this match but I still believe that when Bret won the WWF IC Title the second time Vs. Piper and the Perfect Vs. Bret match from WWF King of the Ring 1993 where both better matches.

Thanks.

Typical Idiot that Drury is...

doesn't read the first post which describes the purpose of this thread...it's not to compare this match with others...and WHY THE FUCK are you bringing up a match that doesn't even relate to this match?

Mello Yello~!

I've always been a big mark for this match since seeing it live on ppv (I only saw approx 2 ppvs/yr back then). I had NO idea how it would turn out and the match may have been the first match I subconciously enjoyed the WRESTLING aspect of professional wrestling. Not that I hadn't seen great matches before that, but his match sorta made me appreciate it more than ever. The commentary was great of course. And I LOVED the way the sharpshooter got applied. Not one of us marks saw it comin'. Beautiful match. And it was nice to see it reprinted on just about every Best of SummerSlam tape from that point on. When I think great SummerSlam bouts, Hart/Hennig immediately springs to mind.

It's one of my favorite Summerslam matches of all time. I haven't seen the full version in a LONG time though. The only copy I have available right now is a clipped version on one of the Coliseum "Greatest Matches Ever" tapes. This is definitely my favorite Mr. Perfect match, although I still have yet to see KOTR 93.
