Guest The Winter Of My Discontent

This whole thing confuses me. I doubt it'll be readily available in Canada anyway.

For those that don't have On Demand with digital cable, let me explain how it works, because I do.

You subscribe on a monthly basis, say HBO. You pay 9.99 a month. Every week new programming is added and categorized into sections (movies/specials/series/etc.) and are accessed from an on screen menu. You can then choose to play any program you choose and in fact can pause it and rewind it and fast forward it just like a video (or Tivo). You can view the show as many times as you want (eventually they're taken out to rotate new shows in, hence the 20 hours of new programming a week). You can tape anything you want to your VCR though, so you can keep any show you want before they take it off.

So, basically you'd pay a fee per month which gives you access to the progamming which can be accessed as an on screen video library (like PPV only you wouldn't have to pay per show), and you can choose to watch and rewatch whatever you like as long as you're a subscriber. It's really cool, and probably the best reason to get digital cable right now.

Does that make it clear?

See now on my digigtal cable I get just regular HBO. It's just a regular channel with set programming like any other cable.

Right, but on Comcast and many others, not only do we have the regular "real time" premium channels (and their many varieties), but On Demand in a addition. Basically you get free HBO on Demand with an HBO subscription, free Showtime on demand with Showtime subscription, etc., etc. There are also several categories of free On Demand programming mostly educational and BBC programming that is free to all digital cable customers. Hopefully your system will be updated soon. Where is Mr. "Comcast" Rant when you need him anyway? :P

So how would this work with Satelite? They don't have VOD services, but the WWE wouldn't be alienating their top PPV market would they?

Unfortunately for me i doubt this will find it's way to Australia, but still if the WWE doesn't screw things up (big if for this company) this should be a very positive move, it's about time they started making more use of that video library they own.

like Cox Cable does digital and we do In demand which is like our PPV but they mostly do movies and such, is there any word on which cable companies they are gonna bring the WWF 24/7 too?

I love how this is out, people either don't understand or don't know the details (their aren't too many yet), BUT people can find things to whine about.

Regardless this will be great. Its PAY ON DEMAND, so if you don't want it, don't get it. It will flood the market with old material (if one of us gets it, we can pass things to other people.) It will enable them to do some really cool things - hell, they could show WCW once a day and go through the library. And at 20 hours of programming to choose from, rather than 24/7 there won't be too much of a flood of crap.

And whoever said THEY SHOULDNT ALIENATE THEIR DISH AUDIENCE - what should they do? Give no one anything, so dish people are equal?

im psyched.

No, they just need to make a broadcast, not on-demand, version as well. Current on-demand channels have plans for this, such as The Anime Channel and other VOD stations.

It would be smart for WWE to at least sound interested in doing that as they make a lot of money from satellite people. DTV stopped carrying PPVs from No Mercy 2001 until No Way Out 2002. And unsuprisingly, everything from No Mercy to Royal Rumble had some sad buyrates until WM18 gave a brief boost. But then the HHH & Hogan eras began and everything fell apart.

InDemand is the PPV outfit by the way owned by the cable companies.

OnDemand is Comcast's (IO is Cablevisions) VOD service. Basically if you have digital cable (this is with Comcast... can't speak for IO) you get all content free except for subscription channels (HBO, SHO, etc which if you subscribe to those premiums you get them) and OnDemand PPV.

So.. if this is an OnDemand catergory on say Comcast... chances are (I would bet on it) it will be free if you have digital cable.

Satellite will just probably have to jack off or go to their friends house as they will need another bird to offer VOD... so I don't know what will happen or if it will just be a channel that just airs the same 20 hours repeatedly or not.

DISH/DTV doesn't have the bandwidth.

Sorry.

:D

In the long run, neither does cable.

I predict fiber going up to everyone's doorsteps.

Regardless, it wouldn't be a problem for them if they came up with a non-Demand broadcast alternative.

How about just buying a bunch of tansmitters and broadcasting wrestling all day and all night? Then you have Smackdown on it and screw UPN and do whatever you want within broadcast standards. Basically, what Jobber is suggesting.

I have a feeling it's going to be a lot of stuff like Before they Where Stars and Raw's Funniets Moments, with some Mid 90s IYH's as the most appealing programing.

God you are dense.

Cable already has fiber running right next to your house, all it takes is everyone rewiring their houses (which would be up to the owners of the house) and us bringing the line right in.

That's why our system is Hybrid Fiber COAX. If you "knew" so much you would have know that. Perhaps you shouldn't comment on an industry you know nothing about.

Guest I Got Banned for Sucking

Professional Wrestling isn't exactly a precious commodity in Australia.

Nothing like that will ever happen down here, despite the huge fanbase.

The bright side - it keeps it out of the mainstream (you know what I mean).

What he said is correct with IO. Which does this except IO is money hungry and you have to pay for extra base stations unless you move up packages. I have silver and have every movie channel except for SHowtime, The Movice Channel, and a few of those sub Starz networks. But none of these (blank)OD channels. I only have HBO on Demand. Which is cool.

As for Fiber Optic lines, they had they here for YEARS going on 10. The only people without these are those with WAY basic cable, IE: 15 channels.
