The Amazing Rando 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2004 University of Washington, Seattle Campus - Auditorium – 8 PM As the scene fades up, fans of the SWF are shown - having gathered together for a live question and answer session with the SWF’s own Cruiserweight Champion, Alan Clark. The room is filled to near capacity and soft murmuring can be heard from all corners. The lights begin to dim as Alan Clark takes the auditorium stage and steps up behind a podium. Dressing quite GQ in a golf shirt and slacks, Alan looks a bit out of place from his normal wear of t-shirt and jeans, but he seems comfortable nonetheless, his Cruiserweight Championship shining around his waist.. “Welcome ladies and gentlemen…fans of the SWF. I have come here this evening to answer any questions you might have. I can see they set up a microphone there and a few of you have already stepped up. Well, don’t be shy. I’ll be here for the next two hours or so.” A few fans line up behind those already standing and Alan waves for the first person to go ahead. “What’s your name and your question?” “The name’s John and I heard that coming up in a few days you are going to be facing against the former World Champion Tom Flesher…” his name garners a few cheers from the crowd, “…and I was wondering if you had thought of any strategy for the match.” “Well, my first thought was to simply call in sick that day and hope nobody noticed.” Alan quips, and some chuckling is heard, “but seriously, Tom Flesher is truly one of those one-of-a-kind gifted types of athletes that always tries to give 110% every time he steps into the ring, and it does have me a bit worried for my safety. Not as worried as going against a guy like the Thugg, but still worr…” “Not to interrupt…but what was it like knowing that you actually pinned Thugg?” “When I regained all of my senses in the ambulance, I wasn’t really sure if I had won the match. I didn’t remember much after I got about halfway down from the roof. That jump felt about ten times worse than the jump I made last Christmas against Todd Royal – but both outcomes were thankfully the same and now I get to tell my grandchildren that in a span of about eight days I became a champion and got a win on one of the largest and most dominant men in the business ever. I really hope they are proud of me, cause it’s getting hard to top myself… “You want to top yourself?! Try beating Landon Maddix once! You seem to have a tough time doing that!” through the darkness, the voice booms out toward the stage. A few others gasp, and Alan turns his attention to where he believes the voice came from. “Now now, I do hold one win over Landon Maddix, I took the European Title from him en route to being a double champion. Don’t you remember that?” “Of course I do, but do you remember all the other times when you FAILED!” “Yes I do, and I know that failure is simply a part of life and it happens to everyone and I have accepted it and learned to deal with it…it just seems that Mr. Maddix has not done the same thing.” Alan speaks in reference to the attack from Lockdown. “I was out pleasing folks just like yourself and Maddix took it upon himself to hit me in the back of the head and take off running like a coward.” “LANDON MADDIX IS NOT A COWARD!” The voice screams out. “Well you sure seem to be, hiding in those shadows over there. Does the House of Todd meet in total darkness so as not to embarrass anyone? Can somebody get a spotlight over there?” Alan asks and the spotlight shines across the audience… “I AM NOT EMBARASSED!!” …revealing Landon Maddix getting to his feet!! “How dare you insult me and the rest of the House of Todd. These people out here are loyal disciples that follow the Book of Todd just like you should be doing!” The crowd boos toward Maddix and he turns his attention toward them…”Don’t act like that towards me! I’ve pinned your World Champion! You have no right to treat me with such disrespect…and YOU…” Landon’s attention is turned back to Alan…”you are nothing more than an unworthy paper champion. You’ve always need weapons or cars or voices in your head to win your battles for you!! All I ever needed was skill and the teachings of Todd! I watched you get hauled away by that ambulance at From the Fire and I knew that we would never hear the end of it…and look where we are now. All you ever talk about is how you beat Thugg and are some kind of savior to the SWF… …YOU ARE NO SAVIOR!!” Landon moves away from his seat and out into the row of people waiting behind the microphone, shoving past them till he gets to it and pushing John to the floor. “Look at you with that happy little smirk on your face. Do you think I should be afraid of you just because you beat Thugg? He was old! Washed up! Finished! He came out of a wheelchair for crying out loud…and you think you are special! What about Landon Maddix? HUH? I pinned Charlie Matthews, the traitor, in the center of the ring! Another time and place, and you could be standing behind that silly little podium looking down at your new World Champion! All I see when I look at you is a loser! That Cruiserweight Title would be better served as a paperweight than around your waist! I may not stand eye to eye with Tom Flesher, but I for one and hoping that by the end of Storm that I don’t see that title around your waist. As much as it would bring me joy and pleasure to beat you again and again and again for that belt, it would mean more to me as a wrestler and as a person to be able to tell my friends, my family, and my fellow House of Todd members that I defeated “The Superior One” for the Championship, because looking at you up there, beating you means nothing to me anymore. Déjà vu only goes so far, and then it becomes nothing more than a waste of my precious time, just like being here. So let me give you a message for Tom Flesher…when you are laying on your back in that ring and the referee is trying to wake you up…try and grab Tom’s attention and tell him to keep that belt nice and warm…cause it’ll be mine soon.” With those final words, Landon turns and walks out of the back of the auditorium, leaving the students to get back to their feet, and leaving Alan Clark standing on the stage, his eyes burning with rage, his hand rubbing across his championship as the scene fades out. The Ill One 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2004 Very nice, Clark. I must admit I saw it coming but I like it... I couldn't help but to wonder where James Lipton was though . Anyway thank Todd we get to see more Maddix/Clark.
the.weej 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2004 It's a nice follow-thru from the first Clark/Maddix interaction promo, at least SWF wise, which was a month ago IIRC. A little more original than your standard face-to-face meeting promo, but something was... lacking. I think you need to work on dialogue a little more; Landon could've used a little more fire in what he was saying, and both characters seemed to be speaking similarly. The prose is really important in defining distinctive speech patterns, especially in dialogue driven writing, so there's a good contrast. When you lack that, words can lose their lustre. Pretty solid promo just the same. -Z
The Amazing Rando 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2004 it's hard writing dialogue for characters that aren't your own. I'm sure Landon will say the same thing, because in his 'birthday' promo I didn't think Alan sounded like Alan...but it still got the point across. I also wrote it pretty quickly and was going to have a bit more fan interaction and actual back-and-forth between the two men...but I thought if it went too far that they would actually start to fight out of nature...and I didn't want to take it that far. Secret Agent 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2004 Good promo, outside of what Z already mentioned, but I liked it none the less. You should of had Alan remind Landon about his failures recently as a good come back, that would have been sweet! Keep it up, maybe when i think of something to do singles wise I'll post a promo. Certainly. It's not the same writing someone else unless you've researched or had an 8 month feud with the other guy. I think you did a good job of capturing me. Nice to see you getting some constructive criticism...so I'll give you a little myself Tip for the future...Landon tends to be erratic. When he's pleased with himself, he will grin his ass off. But he will, as you made him in this, lose his temper at the drop of a hat. But he'll be erratic about his words. Besides that you didn't do a bad job of capturing me, and it was a very solid promo. And I got the last word, which fits in with what I've got wrote for Storm. Plus it's good to see with got this bit of spontinaity (I need to learn how to spell that) between us. Rambling again... HVilleThugg 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2004 Nice promo...although, like Johnny said, I would have liked to have seen Maddix mention all the matches Clark lost before the PPV. Da "making an effort to read promos" H
