The Greatest Horror Films Of All Time

Guest I Got Banned for Sucking

Rule No. 1 of making a successful horror movie: Make about 10 follow-ups.

Friday the Thirteenth, Halloween and Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho are among my favourites of all time.

How about you?

This has been done a hundred times, but what the hell.

Despite the fact it could never have existed had more influential horror films come before it, Scream is, by far, the most terrifying movie I've ever seen. I was only 11 years old when I first saw it, and was looking over my shoulder whenever I was alone for about 6 months after it.

Just a brilliant, clever movie.

Nightmare On Elm Street 1 & 3. The rest are OK or shit.

Friday The 13th and Part 2.

Night Of The Living Dead

Return Of The Living Dead

Halloween

Halloween H20

Psycho

Jaws (If it counts)

Edit: These are my favorites. 99% of Horror Movies are 1-star blunders because there is no such thing as 0 stars. (Sadly)

"WELCOME TO PRIME TIME, BITCH!"

Despite being one of Freddy's LAMEST kill lines ever, it still gets a chuckle.

I can't help but love how the cripple id turns into some warlock/sorcerer/whatever yet still gets his ass (and heart) handed to him.

Scream was up there, but it's just a pity that it inspired some of the worst, most cliched horror movies of all time.

Not bad, Brocklock - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre would be one of/the best there, in my opinion. I can't believe that I forgot to mention in in the opening post.

What is a shame is that fucking teenagers these days think that the remake is the original, and they don't appreciate fine film-making:

iB: "So, John, what's your favourite film of all time?"

John (15): "Um... xXx!"

Morons.

Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt is another of my favourites.

Nightmare on Elm Street

Psycho 1-2

Halloween 1-3

Jaws

Freddy Krueger is an excellent horror movie heel - one of, if not the, best.

You are a teenager these days. Fifteen too.

The Shining

The Exorcist

Psycho 2

Alien

Rosemary's Baby

I can't think of many more right now, I don't like horror films generally.

Yes, but I'm talking about the general consensus of fifteen-year-olds, who wouldn't know cinematic art if it bit them in the ass.

Halloween H20

*cuts your throat*

Halloween 1 was great. 2 was good. 4 and 5 were passable for slashers. But 6-8 were complete balls. H20 didn't offer one likeable charcter, and that started their trend of not killing rappers and pop stars in horror movies.

Kelly Rowland died in Freddy vs Jason. She took one for the sake of horror.

But anyway...

10. Dawn of the Dead (2004)...sue me, I loved it.

9. Clownhouse

8. The Hills Have Eyes

7. Dog Soldiers

6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)

5. A Nightmare on Elm Street

4. Night of the Living Dead

3. Halloween

2. The Evil Dead

1. Dawn of the Dead (1979)

But what about Freddy's

"Let me handle this bitch!" line in FvJ? That one had me rolling for about 10 seconds before the poor schmuck Freddy had possesed gets owned by Jason.

Nothing tops the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Gritty, all sorts of fucked up, and incredibly artful, taking itself seriously in a way that few low-budget horror movies do. That it manages to still be scary and demented to all of us who grew up amidst a flood of the gratuitous in horror movies is pretty great.

Closest runner-up for me is John Carpenter's remake of The Thing, which has a serious, bizarre spirit that's very much like that of TCM.

My top 10...

10. Dead Alive

9. Ginger Snaps

8. Texas Chainsaw Massacre ('74)

7. Dawn Of The Dead ('79)

6. Alien

5. Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn (this movie has gotten me more pussy than you'd ever believe)

4. Return Of The Living Dead

3. Night Of The Living Dead ('68)

2. John Carpenter's The Thing

1. The Evil Dead

...it's hard for me to find a non-zombie horror movie that I adore, honestly...

Like, TCM is, personally, very boring to me until the last 20 minutes, when it shows the most intense scenes I've ever witnessed in a film. Just the whole "kill 'er, grandpa!" scene gets me, and I'm legitimately shocked by it every time.

Eh...I find the scene where he shoots up the druggy chick a little funnier. "What a rush!" I think was the line. Also cheesy, but gets laughs as well.

I can't help enjoying the movie. I didn't say it was GREAT, just said it was my favorite.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not only my favorite horror movie, it's my favorite movie of any kind. I like it so much, that I even like all the sequels and the remake.

Honestly I just have to say all horror. From obscure Italian gorefests to rehash teen slashers in the wake of Scream, I can watch all and find something redeeming. It's what I love.

10. Zombie Nosh

9. Mountain Of The Cannibal God

8. Halloween

7. Ginger Snaps (easily the best modern horror film I've seen- can't believe the lack of love for this one)

6. Evil Dead 2

5. Zombie Flesh Eaters

4. Braindead

3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original- obviously)

2. Candyman (one of the few horror films that ACTUALLY scared the hell out of me...the tension is almost unbearable in places)

1. Friday the 13th

The most disappointing horror film I've seen is A Nightmare On Elm Street- everyone had hyped it up to me for years, but when I saw it, I was only mildly entertained. I got the impression that Freddy was the kind of guy who laughed at his own jokes, which was really offputting

Psycho 2

Holy shit, that better not be a typo. Could someone besides me actually like Psycho 2 better than Psycho 1?

Psycho is nothing compared to its sequel.

Who in their right mind considers Hitchcock to be better than Richard Franklin?

My first thought was TCM, but the odd thing is that when I first saw it as a kid the first half of the film scared the crap out of me. However, the second half had me laughing nonstop...

"Come on Franklin... come on!" & he continues spray strawberries constanly
