Ted the Poster Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 Film director John Woo (PAYCHECK, WINDTALKERS) has optioned the movie rights to Nintendo's METROID video game franchise. Woo will produce the movie along with Suzanne Zizzi, Terence Chang and Brad Foxhoven, and he also could direct the film if he so chooses. The movie will focus on the original premise of the METROID series, that being of a futuristic female bounty hunter named Samus Aran and her mission to bring down the evil machine forces of Mother Brain and the Metroids. Nintendo has made METROID games for the original NES game system, the GameCube and the GameBoy Advance. An eighth game, METROID PRIME 2, will make its debut during next month's E2 gaming convention. The plan is to release the METROID film sometime in 2006 and hope it is successful enough to spawn a new movie franchise. Source: The Hollywood Reporter Hmm... John Woo's films have been a bit lacking recently, but I think Metroid's premise will work well as a movie. But should Woo direct or just produce? At least since Metroid's setting is in space we know Woo wouldn't be able to use those goddamn doves again. Unless of course he uses ROBOT SPACE DOVES~! However, a bigger question is who could play Samus? I think Charlize Theron would fit very well, but she's already doing one sci-fi action movie(Aeon Flux) and might not want to do another so soon. Thoughts?
Mole Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 Yeah, but it is John Woo. The man has a great eye for action, but he doesn't know how to tell a story.
The Ghost of bps21 Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 Yeah, but it is John Woo. The man has a great eye for action, but he doesn't know how to tell a story. Lucky for him Metroid doesn't have a complex story.

Guest Vitamin X Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 It needs to be an asskicking redhead. Too bad Sigourney Weaver is too old for the role to have her hair dyed red.
DMann2003 Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 Kate Winslet. Not a bad choice Ahhh forget accurate casting and get Michelle Rodriguez
Guest Vitamin X Posted April 7, 2004 Report Posted April 7, 2004 I doubt somehow that Kate Winslet could play a hardbody character like that. Maybe get Michelle to dye her hair red or... damn if Milla Jovovich hadn't already done Fifth Element and Resident Evil, she would be PERFECT for this role.....
Mik Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I hate to say this, but if Nicole Kidman got in shape...she kinda looks like Samus. *ducks things being thrown at me*
Lil' Bitch Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I'm surprised by this news, I would have figured Paul Anderson would have gotten to it sooner or later.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I'm shocked that no one mentioned thus far that ALIEN was pretty much the genesis for the idea of the Metroid game. Oh and why not Claire Danes?
Toshiaki Koala Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 If I had to choose someone to make the movie, it would be him, but I still don't think it's a good idea.
5_moves_of_doom Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 Yeah, but it is John Woo. The man has a great eye for action, but he doesn't know how to tell a story. RE: The Killer. Hrm... I won't expect too much out of this, but it should be very good for a video-game-based film. I'll wait for the casting and trailer before I decide whether or not I want to see this for sure, though.
