BPro said he's better than Ken Harvey. Uh huh. Calvin is also older and heavier than Ken. You'd rather trade him and keep Ken Harvey? Err, okay. There's one problem with that plan. Calvin is left-handed, Harvey is right-handed. They'd make a good platoon, if the Royals didn't have Matt Stairs. Even with AAA glory, does that mean he's due for a breakout year in the majors? There's a large body of evidence suggesting AAA success is an indicator of big league success, and the line between a major leaguer and minor leaguer isn't as clear as one might think. He's a left-handed first baseman/DH for the AAA Omaha Royals. Here are his numbers so far: he's played in 8 games He's scored 11 runs He has 13 hits in 24 at-bats (.542) He has one double and two singles He's hit 10 home runs Yes. He has hit 10 home runs already. That's good for 44 total bases and 23 runs batted in. He has a 1.833 slugging percentage right now. Odds are, he will slow down. But, he will have plenty of time to kick ass, since the Royals have two good first basemen (Sweeney and Ken Harvey) and Matt Stairs is also on the team. But, if Stairs gets hurt, Pickering might make it to Kansas City. I'd rather let him go on to hit 50+ home runs in AAA. Or, I'd trade him to a stupid team PORK CHOP! I saw him play a lot of A Ball for the Orioles Affiliate Delmarva Shorebirds in 1997. I went to a game the Shorebirds played in NC and people were heckling him calling him Pork Chop. Minor/Major stats through 2001 He hit 25 Homers here (in a very unfriendly HR park) leading the Shorebirds to the SAL League title and 31 the next year at AA Bowie. He only hit 16 HR at AAA in 99 and 6 in 2000 although I suspect maybe there was in injury in 2000. He didn't do anything when he was called up with the Os so I imagine thats why they let him go. The trade, announced after the Astros beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 at Minute Maid Park, gives the club another power arm to add to the bullpen. Harville will join the major-league club and will be in uniform for tonight's game against the Brewers. The Astros will have to make room for Harville on the 25-man roster, and general manager Gerry Hunsicker said a move would be announced today. "He is somebody that hasn't pitched a lot at the major-league level," Hunsicker said of Harville. "He's been a closer at the minor-league level. Certainly, he has closer's stuff. He throws 94, 96 mph with a low to mid-80s slider. He's got Brad Lidge kind of stuff. "It's just that he has not had the opportunity at the major-league level to demonstrate what he can do." Harville, 27, was 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA in three relief appearances for Oakland this season but was designated for assignment Thursday. He was out of options and said he wouldn't accept his minor-league assignment, which prompted Oakland to trade him. Saarloos, 24, made his big-league debut in just his professional season but struggled. He failed to make the team out of spring training and was 0-2 with a 15.43 ERA in two starts at Class AAA New Orleans. Harville has a 1-2 record in the majors with a 5.62 ERA in 42 games in parts of four seasons. ---------------- Anyone know anything about this Harville guy? To this point he's be your classic 4-A player. Dominates Triple-A but struggles in the Majors. Hard thrower who the A's at once point pegged as a future closer but has had control problems.
