Red Baron Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 I wonder how much highlights the spend on the pathetic Detroit/New Jersey game instead of a high paced, high actioned Detroit/Calgary instead.
Guest Redhawk Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 When ESPN aired Pat Tillman's memorial service, I was wondering why they hadn't aired any other similar memorial services. Granted, no one else in Iraq/Afghanistan was a pro athlete, but I'm sure there were some former college athletes fighting overseas. And at what point is an athlete/soldier "not important" enough to get ESPN coverage?
Guest Redhawk Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 The ESPN ticker just "reported" the "news" that Dick Enberg signed a deal to announce tennis on ESPN. Is that really news?
Vern Gagne Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Oh my.. I'm fairly certain Enberg's never worked for ESPN before. Not that special interest stories are working.
Guest Redhawk Posted May 22, 2004 Report Posted May 22, 2004 The "Not Top 10" is now called the "Hardly Usual Top 10," sponsored by Mike's Hard Lemonade. Get it, hard-ly?
JustJoe2k5 Posted May 22, 2004 Report Posted May 22, 2004 What is Rich Eisen doing? Bring him back!! The only sports I really pay any attention to are hockey and college basketball during the NCAA tournament. I usually turn on ESPNews when I'm going to sleep, so I don't really care what ESPN does. I also don't like the fact that ESPN promoted itself as the man's channel, and now they are showing women's college basketball and have women anchors on Sportscenter.
TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe Posted May 22, 2004 Author Report Posted May 22, 2004 Rich Eisen is on the NFL Network now.

Guest Smues Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 I finally just saw one of those ESPN shorts everyone is bitching about. I don't know what in the hell I just watched. It made no damn sense. And it sounds pretty stupid on sportscenter to hear "Could they manage a win? We'll find out after this ESPN short."
Guest Choken One Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 on Baseball Tonight...Harold and Kruky did their own little USA Vs The World type deal where they picked players... Kruk rep the US and Harold repped the Intl. Here was Kruks team 1B-Thome 2B-Kent SS-A-Rod 3B-Rolen Outfielders-Bonds, Griffey Jr and someone else(forgot) Catcher-Piazza Pitcher-Schilling Closer-The Philly Guy (forgot name) Harolds Intl team 1B-Pujols 2B-Vidro SS-Tejada 3B-Forgot who it was Outfielders-Sosa, Vladmir Guerrero and forgot the third (think it was Ichiro) Catcher-Ivan Rodizuez Pitcher-Pedro Martinez Closer-Gagne
Guest Redhawk Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 I don't have a problem with ESPN Shorts in general, I just don't see why they belong on Sportscenter. You don't see NBC running movie clips during the Nightly News.
Guest MikeSC Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 After watching their "expose" on sports video games, I can now say that ESPN is even more clueless than I thought. -=Mike ..."Well, I didn't see the game before now and I don't think it's responsible for..." --- um, ma'am, if YOU BUY A GAME FOR YOUR LITTLE KID WITHOUT LOOKING AT IT FIRST, how is ANYBODY else irresponsible when compared to you?
kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Ha -- I saw the preview for that segment but I had to leave and missed it. Were there any "ESPN" video games featured? And we've had this debate for YEARS now -- I remember people raising a stink over NHL 93 because in some fights the guy that lost fell onto the ice with blood spurting out. I never saw sports video games as violent ever ... ever...
Bored Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Linda Cohn promo for SportsCenter: "How video games are promoting violence...and SEX!" Man SportsCenter is becoming as legitimate as local news.
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Could someone explain the video game segment? Was it the usual people who have never seen a video game in their life going on about how bad they are?
Guest MikeSC Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Ha -- I saw the preview for that segment but I had to leave and missed it. Were there any "ESPN" video games featured? And we've had this debate for YEARS now -- I remember people raising a stink over NHL 93 because in some fights the guy that lost fell onto the ice with blood spurting out. I never saw sports video games as violent ever ... ever... No, mainly MLB Slugfest and NBA Ballers. Oh, and NFL Street. You haven't LIVED until you hear Joe Horn LEGITIMATELY bitch that he gets punished for his grandstanding, while the NFL licenses Street, which heavily features taunting in it. It might well replace om Jackson's post-Rush diatribe as the most surreal yet asinine thing I've ever heard on that network. Could someone explain the video game segment? Was it the usual people who have never seen a video game in their life going on about how bad they are? In short, Slugfest teaches kids that violence is OK --- and they found some player to agree with the assessment. Ballers teaches kids that women are property and can be bought. You know, the premise for "For Love or Money". And NFL Street shows that taunting is a good thing and players like Joe "You didn't Know My Name Until My Celebration" Horn thinks that it is wrong. -=Mike
Damaramu Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 What the hell does ESPN stand for? Just a question that floated to my mind the other night.
Guest MikeSC Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 What the hell does ESPN stand for? Just a question that floated to my mind the other night. Entertainment and Sports Programming Network --- if memory serves. Which it might not. -=Mike
Guest Choken One Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 It stands for nothing according to ESPN themselves... People just coined it Entertainment Sports Programing Networks...which makes no sense because it used to be about sports and contained NO "entertainment" until around the late 90's.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 In short, Slugfest teaches kids that violence is OK --- and they found some player to agree with the assessment. Ballers teaches kids that women are property and can be bought. Good grief. Back in my day I LOVED playing High Impact Football in the arcade -- guess I have to now go out and rape some women and beat up some kids. I'm not buying my nice and nephew sports games -- I'll buy them some Medal of Honor titles instead...
KingPK Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 I'm not buying my nice and nephew sports games -- I'll buy them some Medal of Honor titles instead... Nah, get GTA: Vice City. It'll help hone their defensive driving skills for later in life and lets them practice their hooker pickup lines. Gotta love the "It's not MY job to raise my kid" brand of parenting. And why isn't ESPN pimping the hell out of their own game franchise? They kind of paint themselves into a corner when some of their shows (NFL Matchup for one) are sponsored by EA and use EA's games to illustrate different things.
Guest Redhawk Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 I heard that ESPN used to stand for "Eastern Sports Programming Network," but basically they became bigger than they thought they would and went national. I've had the ESPN-edited version of the McNabb stuff ingrained in my head (basically where they cut out anything on NFL Gameday that made themselves look bad -- i.e. Michael Irvin saying that Rush Limbaugh had some points) so could someone explain the whole "ever....ever" thing?
kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Basically, the "ever ... ever" is making fun of Berman, who said "I never saw McNabb as a black quarterback ever ... ever." Whenever I or someone else (usually MikeSC) says this line, it is usually followed by "I was just asked by *insert name of group* if it would be OK for them to *insert what this group wants to do,*" which is making fun of Tom Jackson's "I was asked by little black kids if it was OK for them to be quarterbacks." This thread here is pretty much where all this started...
Ripper Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 I hate a multi billion dollar company like ESPN has those goddamn "cover up the whole screen" pop ups on their site like they need the sponsorship. I mean, I want to find out about sports, not who starred in "My Baby's Daddy". Oh, and Stephen A. Smith is a fucking moron. Between him bitching saying "We as fans don't pay to see players play defense, we want to see then score alot. We are paying these players salary, and we ain't paying for defense." and his "Lakers let Minnesota win" crap last week, it just gives me more ammo to go in the 26 book series on "how many ways does Stephen A Smith suck." goddamned moron.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 You know, I used to like Smith, but over the past year or so he's been getting on my nerves. Oddly enough, my opinion of him really changed during the whole Rush resigns from ESPN fiasco. He was on O'Reilly's show talking about this and made sense, but then I read his column on the matter the next day and it was almost a complete contradiction of what he said the night before. I think a more important part of my feelings toward him now is that I wasn't exposed to him as much back in the day...
Guest Redhawk Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Has Stephen A. Smith ever been on the same set with Barkley? I'm thinking maybe Barkley might have been on "Best Damn Sports Show" when Smith was on there or something. Anyway, if Stephen talked to Barkley the way he talks to Greg Anthony and everyone at ESPN -- all smarmy and smart-alecky and so DAMN LOUD -- Barkley would just backslap him on-air.
Guest Redhawk Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 If Stephen A. Smith, Max Kellerman, Bob Ryan and Samuel Jackson did an episode of The Sports Reporters -- with Craig Sager and his pimp suit as moderator -- would my TV short-circuit due the all the loudness?
Slayer Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 I was asked by Ripper if it was okay for him to be black
