Dead Prez any good?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering from the hip hop fans of this folder what they thought of Dead Prez. I've heard that their music is pretty good, but the content is of the "Kill Whitey" variety and is very militant. I'm wondering if they are more like a modern day Public Enemy, or if they are better or worse. I've only heard one track from them, but was wondering if any of their other work is worth picking up.

I haven't heard alot of their material, but what I have heard I liked. They are definetly militant and come across racist at times. They will never get any kind of promotional attention from Mainstream because of their views.

They aren't that good, but "Hip Hop", which I'm sure is the one you've heard, is amazing and makes them look much better than they are. They did a song called "Sharp Shooters" with Talib Kweli which is pretty good. The other song of theirs I like is called "Mind Sex". It's a song of bullshit that you would tell a woman to get in her pants, but they play it serious. I like to use it in romantic settings. Other than that, you'd probably be better off getting into somebody else. It kind of sounded like you wanted something militant. If so, maybe try Wu Tang associates Killarmy, who aren't too special, but play to their strengths better than DP, and are surprisingly fun for a "Kill Whitey" group.

I came across DP through my brother a few years back, and while I don't listen to them all that much, I like them and thought their first album was pretty good. I know they just came out with a new album, RBG. I don't have it, but I heard the first single off the album, "Hell Yeah" and I like it. They definitely come strong with the "Kill Whitey" mentality though and are more extreme than PE was in that respect.

You just summed it up there......I wouldn't say that they are necessessarily racist, I would call them......militant........and they are damn good.

Publie Enemy was racist now?

I'm gonna play the white conservative card on this one; did they outright say "I hate white people"? Or are you just reading into what they're saying?

I d/l Hip Hop, and I'm glad I did because I knew I had heard the Chappelle's show theme somewhere, just didn't have the name.

When did I say that PE was racist?

He was asking whether or not Dead Prez is militant like PE and I said that they're more extreme because they'll take the "Kill Whitey" stance. For example, from "Fuck the Law" off the Get Free or Die Trying Mixtape:

"Slap a white boy, snuff your landlord. Smash the windows, break the camcorder. Rob the corner store, rob the precinct..."

And even with that, I'm a little hesitant to call them a racist group, because they're more anti-establishment than they are anti-white. Hell, most of their fans *are* white.

That was very weird wording. I think the whitey stuff is just an extension of the Wu influence and just there to be hard and really show you how left wing they are. I have not read any interviews with them though, and there would be a good place to see if they are actually racist. They are good but they aren't sliced bread.

Also Paragon, since when is Hip Hop the theme for Chappelle's Show?

They play Chappelle onto the stage with Hip Hop, it's not the main theme.

I've read interviews with them, they're more anti America than anti white. They're like a blacker Rage Against the Machine.

Thanks.....I figured they weren't racist, especially since I bet their albums sell to a higher percentage of white kids than even the mainstream rap cuts.

All that anger.

All that hype from fans.

All that hot garbage.

Folks still swear Dead Prez got a banger in them, swear they're so revolutionary.

Why though? Their albums are neither.

People have been screaming for some pro-Black militance so bad that they would take whatever got thrown out there, hence these ignorant rabble-rousers trying to point out problems and add to them instead of offering solutions. It's just embarassing to the cause.

And I have yet to hear a song more romo than 'Mind Sex'.
