This Week in Baseball

Recommended Posts

No real huge series to look forward to this week that I can see, but Yankees-A's should prove interesting to see if Oakland can keep the Yankees' bats silent.

And I also caught this Jayson Stark article at ESPN.com: Loria looking to Vegas?

We are gazing into our ESPN.com crystal ball. We are stunned to find a sight we never thought we'd ever see:

It's a team playing major-league baseball games illuminated by the bright lights of Las Vegas.

But here's the real stunner inside that crystal ball:

That team we're seeing in there is not the Expos.

Instead, that team is a club you may have last laid eyes on while it was setting an all-time October record for most champagne sprayed in one clubhouse.

In other words, that team would be the franchise now known as the Florida Marlins.

Man, what a guy that Loria is. Is a new stadium THAT important for the Marlins? I mean, they've won 2 World Series there, it can't be that bad.

Calm down everyone. The article only says the Marlins might move to Las Vegas if they don't get a stadium. Loria is quoted has saying is he's more confident than ever a new stadium will be built. This is pure speculation on Jayson Starks part.

Whatever, I still don't ever see MLB putting a team in Las Vegas as they would be the biggest hypocrites ever with their stance on Pete Rose.

Anyways I think I'll do this every week for the early part of the season...it's the Snap Judgement Playoff Match-ups! Here is how the playoffs would look like if the season ended today.

American League

Chicago at Boston

Texas at Minnesota

National League

Cincinnati at Florida

Los Angeles at Chicago

Oh look out it's going to Rangers vs. Reds in the World Series!

Well, you'll excuse me if I don't take Jeffrey Loria's words at face value. He doesn't exactly have a sterling track record.

That's fine. I'm just skeptical of stories of teams moving. I mean how long have we heard about the Expos moving?

If Loria doesn't move the team, he's still on my shit-list. In fact, using moving as leverage to get a stadium built is bad enough. Its blackmail, pure and simple. Build your own goddamned stadium and quit trying to ride the coattails of the taxpayers. Montreal didn't fall for your schtick, and neither should Miami.

Whose using moving has leverage? No where does the story quote anyone working for the Marlins saying we'd move if we don't get a stadium. Know it's not like Loria wouldn't do something like this, but so far he hasn't.

Its an old trick. Give us a new stadium or we will move the team.

Oh that wacky New York sports media...Brian Cashman has to squash a Jason Giambi trade rumor.

http://www.nypost.com/sports/yankees/19614.htm

GM Brian Cashman said there is no truth to the rumor roaring through baseball yesterday that said the Yankees were going to trade Jason Giambi to the A's for Tim Hudson. According to the rumor, the Yankees would pay a lot of the $99.6 million remaining on Giambi's contract that has a blanket no-trade clause.

"I have had no trade discussions with anybody," Cashman said.

Because the back end of the Yankees' rotation is shaky, the A's are unlikely to sign all of their top three starters (Hudson, Barry Zito and Mark Mulder) to long-term deals, and Oakland GM Billy Beane loves Giambi, the rumor gained steam.

"It wouldn't be Hudson," an industry source familiar with the A's plans. "They are trying to sign him. They haven't presented that to the Yankees."

Hudson, who faces the Yankees tomorrow night, makes $5 million this year and $6.75 million next year. After that, he is a free agent.

The thing with the Marlins stadium is this... it's not the team's fault. They are doing all they can to raise the money for the stadium. They have raised nearly $300 million. They just need the state to approve the final $60 million to be paid out in $2 million payments for 30 years. No politicians will pass the bill, leaving the final piece of the puzzle left sitting on the table.

The Marlins are doing everything they can to stay in South Florida, but the politicians are the ones dropping the ball.

As a fan of the team that has never even been to Miami, I don't care if they move or not. I'd prefer that they stay but I'd support the team no matter what. I know everyone hates Loria, but it's really not his fault here.

FUCK FUCK FUCK

Kearns has a broken bone in his forearm after being hit on his hand again (first by Randy Wolf, then by Volegsong tonight).

This kid has no luck. Last year, it was fatass Ray King who SAT ON HIS SHOULDER, and he has yet to recover from that injury. Now, Wolf and Volegson tag team to break a bone in his forearm.

In good news... Harang, again, looking VERY fine out on the mound.. and Larson is back.

That is, without question, the stupidest trade rumor I have ever heard in my life. Oakland would trade a pitcher not due for free agency until 2005, for a first baseman making $15 Million a season, on the wrong side of 30? Never mind that Beane prefers players leave by free agency anyway because he prefers the draft picks. And never mind that ace pitchers are harder to find than first baseman who can hit but barely play defense. I mean, who the hell comes up with this shit?

Fuck Loria. He sold the Expos down the river in order to buy the Marlins, and now he's thinking of moving them because they have the nerve not to gift wrap money for him?

Well, it took all of 3 minutes, but the Marlins are up 1-0 in Colorado on a Pierre triple and Castillo single to start off the game.

I hate to post 3 times in a row...but DAMN. It's batting practice in Colorado right now.

Gonzalez homered to deep left, Conine scored.

Castro flied out to deep left.

Conine doubled to deep right.

Choi homered to center.

Lowell grounded out to second.

Cabrera homered to deep right, Castillo scored.

Castillo singled to center, Pierre scored.

Pierre tripled to deep right.

One of the outs went to the warning track. The only person who didn't smack it around so far is Lowell. 6 spot in the first. Still batting.

Ted Lilly is in some kinda zone tonight. Only 2 hits for the Twins through 8 and he's probably done for the night with a 6-1 lead.

I thought the same thing when I read it. Who in their right mind would make that deal? I wouldn't do it in my fantasy league (I do have Hudson).

Greg Myers went down to what looks like an ankle injury rounding third in the 8th and had to be wheeled out. Lilly is cruising though the end of 8. 6-1 Jays over Twins.

Loria should consult with Art Modell then..

I think its pretty obvious the Marlins need their own stadium with a retractable roof on it.

Twins can never hit Lilly, and Radke's a piece of crap.
