Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 This is just retarded, the team is on fire right now, and this guy has to throw this kind of garbage out there. Classic Asshole I dont care if they have not made him an offer, does it really have to go public NOW?
the max 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 Bye Pedro. They can get another Class-A pitcher on the FA market for less than 15-17 million dollars.
Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 I have been hoping that the Cubs won't sign Clement and allow him to go to Free Agency. I wouldnt have ANY problem with a rotation of: Schilling Lowe(They should sign him) Wakefield Kim Clement No problem at all. Nomar will be leaving too, thus freeing up plenty of play money for the FA's in the off season. Either that, or at least freeing up plenty of money to give Lowe, Ortiz, and Varitek their due raises and long term deals.
the max 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 With Nomar leaving, I'd like to see Edgar Renteria pursued to see what he wants money-wise. Other than that, I have no problems with what you said.

Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 Yea, he could very well be a Yankee, and he would probablt bite us in the ass like Clemens did. Although I still think Clemens leaving was what re-fueled his fire and made him work harder to pitch better again. I doubt they will pursue Renteria though. I think the Cards should re-sign him for one. and Two, Pokey Reese cannot hit, but he plays a mean SS. With Bellhorn at 2B and Pokey at SS right NOW they are scoring just enough to win, and playing VERY good defense together. I have no problem with those teo starting next season until SS prospect Hanley Ramirez is ready for the show. If Damon is traded, the Sox could also go after Carlos Beltran. I would like to see him here rather than going after another SS when we already have one of the best defensive SS's in baseball (Reese).
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Report post Posted May 1, 2004 If the Yankees...or Steinbrenner to be more exact, EVER sign Martinez, I swear to God I will never watch them again or buy any shit that has their names on it. I respect him for being a good pitcher, but his attitude is shitty, and Steinbrenner doesn't put up with that bullshit. Raul Mondesi anyone?
Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 Gary Sheffield anyone? Kenny Lofton? Kevin Brown? Real nice guy list there. Pedro will go to the highest(longest deal) bidder. Who do ya think THAT will be?
Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 Ok, I don't really know much about baseball, as evidence of my poor handlings with the Head-2-Head Fantasy Baseball League I started (shameless plug, I know), but um, what's assholic about this? He gave them extra time for a deadline, it wasn't made, so he didn't want to be thinking about it while pitching his ass off for the team that he is currently on, so he will wait till the off-season to do so. Now if it is because of his attitude, that's kind of a lame excuse. This stuff happens all the time in sports, and I don't see any of you guys chowing down on the other guys. From what I read of the article, he was being very nice about it, and frankly, I wouldn't blame him for saying "hey, I'm not bothering with this, I want to pitch instead of having to worry about this as well." Yes, sure, that also work to further his free agency bid, but honestly, if I was a guy who had free agency after the end of the season, and I would've told my team the same thing. "You only get a shot at getting me a deal at the beginning of the season or the end. I'm not dealing with that anytime inbetween, because I just want to play and not have that stuff clouding my mind on what I need to do." Maybe I'm just not getting it here. Either that, or at least freeing up plenty of money to give Lowe, Ortiz, and Varitek their due raises and long term deals. I don't see why the Sox really NEED to re-sign any of those guys. Jason Varitek: Good catcher, but last year was the first time in four years he put up quality numbers. Meanwhile, the Sox have a worthwhile catching prospect in Kelly Shoppach. David Ortiz: Another good hitter, but he can not hit lefties, and he is best used as a DH. Why sign a guy long term to DH, especially when you need to platoon him? Derek Lowe: Overrated. His K rate as a starter does not bode well as a top-flight pitcher. He put up a gaudy ERA and win total in 2002, but has regressed since. Are you willing to bet big money that he'll return to those numbers? Meanwhile, a veritable shitload of free agents are available this offseason. Carlos Beltran, Magglio Ordonez, Jose Vidro, etc. These guys could help the Sox more than the aforementioned three.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 I wouldn't be surprised to see Lowe leave(Has Boras as an agent and is supposedly looking for #1 starter type money). Ortiz is rumored to be close to signing an extension and Varitek we should be able to re-sign depending on what he's asking and if it's in the realm of his true worth. I wouldn't mind letting Pedro just walk really. IMO, Pedro's starting to decline a bit as he hasn't thrown 200+ innings since 2000(Did throw 199 in 2002 and 186 last year). Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Shoppach is WAY overrated. Varitek is the glue of the pitching staff. Curt Schilling says one reason he wanted to come to Boston was because he wanted to have Varitek to call his games with him. Varitek is severely underrated because he doesnt put up gaudy offensive numbers. Hitting isn't everything, and anyways Shoppach isnt ready to take over...they planned on having him back up for Tek next year.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Varitek is the glue of the pitching staff. Curt Schilling says one reason he wanted to come to Boston was because he wanted to have Varitek to call his games with him. In 2000, with Varitek catching 128 games, the Red Sox allowed 745 runs. In 2001, with Varitek catching 50 games, the Red Sox allowed 745 runs. There is no evidence that catchers influence the quality of a pitching staff. Look, Varitek is likely going to make somewhere in the $10 Million range. Is some mythical ability to control a pitching staff worth that money? I don't think so. The Sox are going to have money to spend this offseason, and they don't have to re-sign their own guys. Players like Magglio Ordonez or Lance Berkman might fit nicely. But they have to spend wisely. I don't think Jason Varitek is the right use of the money.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 You know, if Pedro doesn't go back to Boston, there is a team about 3-4 hours south of Boston that needs a true #1 starter(Do SOMETHING Wade). Fuck no. The Phillies lead the NL in least runs allowed. Pitching is not their problem. If you want an ace, wait for Gavin Floyd or Cole Hamels.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Ah forgot about them, scratch that Pedro idea then. Looking through my media guide, Cole Hamels is 20 years old and had an 0.84 ERA in Single A Lakewood last year. YIKES.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Why would it not shock me if Pedro, just ups and retires after the season is over. He just strikes me has the type of guy who leaves while still relatively in his prime, never to be heard again until he's inducted into the HOF.
Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 Am I the only one who thinks that the Yanks would be making a mistake by going after him? They have enough cranky, injury-prone, veterans on the decline already. They would be much better off trying to get someone like Zito or Hudson from the As. The Yanks need to get younger in a hurry.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2004 They won't get Hudson until he becomes a free agent. I doubt the Yanks have anything the A's want in trade, and the A's are an organization more than happy to take compensation draft picks instead of trading an impending free agent. Zito would be a good fit for the Yankees. His K rate is down, but a move to Yankee Stadium would help, as lefties historically perform well in Yankee Stadium. Cartman 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 Manny: "I'll pay to keep Pedro and Nomar in Boston" Nice! As it says in the article the "Players Association" will never allow this, but I like the fact he is this passionate about keeping the team together.
