the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Phillies have their track shoes on tonight. After having only 7 steals going into tonight, they have three in four innings (and they should have four Lieby was called out when he was clearly safe).
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Moose should throw that strike two to Matsui pitch four times, and when it's called four balls, Joe should come out and get himself thrown out with a lengthy argument.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Phillies lead by three in the eighth. That Tigers/Rangers game is a big reason why I love the baseball season. On any given night, you can see a no hitter, an unassisted triple play, or an outright insane game. I hope ESPN Classic shows it in the future.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Only the Detroit Tigers could score eight runs in an inning, giving them a 10-run lead, and blow it that same inning. Both teams were just insane on the offense today, but then again, over 20 walks combined will fatten the box score.

All you'll see is the 18 run inning. 5th inning fun! There were 100 pitches in the fifth, which lasted 1 hour, 8 minutes and became the highest-scoring fifth inning in major league history. The bottom half lasted 36 minutes. Previously, the record for runs in a fifth inning was 16 on Aug. 3, 1986, by the New York Yankees (10) and the Cleveland Indians (6). The major league record for runs in any inning is 19, by Cleveland (13) and Boston (6) in the eighth inning on April 10, 1977. The Tigers and Rangers combined for 13 hits (eight by Texas), nine walks (five by Texas batters). There were 28 batters in the inning (15 Rangers). Detroit's pitchers threw 46 pitchers and Rangers' pitchers threw 54. The teams used seven pitchers, one short of the major league record for pitchers used in any inning
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Whichever ones Starks spoke to. When Baltimore signed Tejada he spoke on it saying Oakland was going to suffer not only from losing his leadership but also because the scouts he spoke to said Crosby was 1 more year away from the bigs in terms of being ready. I think the "Shannon Stewart for MVP" campaign is a good indicator that Jayson Starks is full of shit. Its worth noting that Crosby is still outhitting Rich Aurilia and Derek Jeter. How is Starks full of shit for writing what scouts told him about Crosby? Derek Jeter is in probably the biggest slump of his career, and Rich Aurillia has proven he was a one year wonder. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 How is Starks full of shit for writing what scouts told him about Crosby? If you need a quote, you can find a scout to tell you what you want to hear. Rumblings about players are all over the place, but its up to the columnist to decide what to print.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Once again, Sergio Mitre has looked shakey through four innings, giving up 10 hits, but only three runs, thanks to three double plays. He's definitely not looking like starter material, but then again, he'll be pen-bound once Prior returns. And Bobby Cox just pulled a Dusty Baker, leaving Russ Ortiz in for 133 pitches, only pulling him after he loaded the bases. The reliever walked in the go-ahead run, by the way. A shame, as Ortiz was cruising until then, but his pitch count was pretty high going into the 7th.
Styles 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Thrilla in Baltimore, on 1954 Retro Weekend, as a the O's hang on in the 9th with the bases loaded to get a 12-11 win over the Indians, sweeping the 3 game series, and improving to 16-12 on the year. Miguel Tejada busted out with 2 homeruns in the game as well.

fairtoflair7 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Good Game at Shea today....Mets blew a 3-1 lead in the 8th and the Brew Crew led 5-3 going to the bottom but once again pitchers are scared to throw to Piazza so he got walked and Wiggington singled home 2 runs when Jae Seo, a pitcher who was pitch running for Piazza did a wacky head-first slide just beating out the tag. Turns out in the 11th that struggling Kaz Matsui gets the game winning double Also to note: Dave Burba must have made the weirdest pitch I've ever seen. He like was about to throw the ball but tripped and it was called a balk which was key at the time because it moved the runner from 1/2 to 2/3 in the 8th so Ty could single them home..... NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 A's win 8-4, and win the series against Minnesota 2-1. The A's bats woke up against Minnesota, a really good series for the A's offense. The starting pitching still looks rusty, but better then before.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Whew. Fantastic win for the Cubs. I can't believe Patterson actually came through in the 13th. Thank God they won that game; would have been tough to take a loss in a game like that. Thank God also for the off day tomorrow. They definitely need it after today. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 No kidding. I was getting ready to bang my head on the table again after I realized they were walking Jackson to get to Patterson. The way he's been swinging, I thought that may be caught but nope. Pretty much makes up for his poor performance today and ending the game yesterday with a strikeout. Fuzzy Dunlop 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2004 Strikes out to win game two, long fly ball to win game three. Dusty must have known they'd walk Jackson, which was the only reason he let Rusch bunt for himself instead of letting Hollandsworth swing away and perhaps hit a homerun. Amazing finish, but exactly what Dusty's known for-- giving everybody a chance, specifically giving CPat the chance to redeem himself.
