Si82 Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 I know he has a lot of haters on this board but I happen to be a fan of Michael Moore and his work. Disney Forbidding Distribution of Film That Criticizes Bush I think that it's pathetic that a documentary is censored in this way so that the house of mouse can save a few bucks in tax breaks. I mean, surley they knew of Moore's previous work when Miramax agreed to finance it. I hope that this doen't effect the overseas distribution in any way.
spman Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 This is perfectly fine by me. The last thing this world needs is more misguided liberal sheep who buy into Moore's lies and deception.
C Dubya 04 Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 This is perfectly fine by me. The last thing this world needs is more misguided liberal sheep who buy into Moore's lies and deception. Oh yeah, I get it. Censorship is okay if someone is saying something that you don't agree with.
Lando Griffin Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 The word "documentary" is, I'm sure, being used loosely.
Skywarp! Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 "Stupid White Men" was originally blocked until a mass campaign started to get it released. I'm sure the same will happen here.
Guest Smues Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 I suppose it's wrong to approve the censorship here, and besides all it'll do is give tubby more ammo THEY TRIED TO SILENCE ME AND FAILED!!! But come on, Moore does NOT make documentaries.
Guest SP-1 Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Hey, Disney is doing something useful for once.

Oh yeah, I get it. Censorship is okay if someone is saying something that you don't agree with. It's not censorship -- Mikey would still be able to get it distributed, and of course it'd get more press since Ashcroft, somehow, tried to put this film on the shelf...

Yeah, I know it's not censorship, the company has the right to do whatever they want. Kind of like it's not impeding your freedom of speech if you get fired for cursing out your boss.
Guest thebigjig Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 yaaaay democracy!! Lets give a shout out to lovers of freedom of speech!! I dont like Michael Moore all that much, but this is ridiculous and I dont care what any of you say, Bowling for Columbine was amazing
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 I've been meaning to see that, actually, but I know when I do that I'm going to want to shoot Moore. I happen to like guns a lot.

I dont like Michael Moore all that much, but this is ridiculous and I dont care what any of you say, Bowling for Columbine was amazing Made me want to get a gun for some reason. Just like Truth commercials make me want to smoke and Britney Spears songs make me want to sing well.
Stephen Joseph Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Poor people, Moore outright lies...And what problem do you have with Disney? If you think about it for one second, Disney is a company that makes investment decisions, and tries to invest where a) returns are higher than the next alternative and b) returns are positive. If Disney doesn't feel that those hold, It should not distribution it. Business decisions people!
Stephen Joseph Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Britney Spears? Sing?... That's the wrong answer to the question "What is Britney's mouth good at doing?"
kkktookmybabyaway Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 If you think about it for one second, Disney is a company that makes investment decisions, and tries to invest where a) returns are higher than the next alternative and b) returns are positive. If Disney doesn't feel that those hold, It should not distribution it. Business decisions people! But BFC did make money -- nothing major, but it did prove its existence, at least on the money side of it -- I guess Disney doesn't like that sort of thing...
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 It's not censorship. Disney feels it won't make money on this venture so it's not being released. And freedom of speech isn't some blanket right that let's you go around saying whatever the hell you feel like. Irresponsible things like Moore's "documnetary" are not always protected.
Ripper Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 This has jack shit to do with money. Disney doesn't want the bad press so they are shelving it. Thats that. And Disney is a bunch of cunts that why I have a problem with them
AlwaysPissedOff Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Why doesn't Mikey just admit that he hates America already? I'm sure that would get him all the pub he so desperately craves...
kkktookmybabyaway Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 And Disney is a bunch of cunts that why I have a problem with them Never thought I'd see the day when Ripper says he has a problem with the vaginas. Homo...
Ripper Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 And Disney is a bunch of cunts that why I have a problem with them Never thought I'd see the day when Ripper says he has a problem with the vaginas. Homo... That was a typo. I meant they are a bunch of tuncs. And Ripper don't like no tuncs.
Stephen Joseph Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 It this doesn't have to do with money, then Disney is poorly run. And KKK, as per your statement. Yes BFC made money, but if you could have invested the money that went to that and earn a higher return elsewhere, wouldn't you go for the higher return. I'm just saying that before we go looking for malicious motives we can't prove because we can't pry open their heads and look inside, lets look at observable stuff. And, if Disney's decision isn't based on comparative profit opportunities but on emotions and whims...then now would be a good time to short their stock... But I don't think that's the case. Rip...It is tough for your case to hold water when you're attributing a personal motive to their action. Simply put, such personal motives are unverifiable and not falsifiable, so that doesn't make for good theory.
Guest MikeSC Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 And Disney is a bunch of cunts that why I have a problem with them Never thought I'd see the day when Ripper says he has a problem with the vaginas. Homo... That was a typo. I meant they are a bunch of tuncs. And Ripper don't like no tuncs. I don't know why --- but this made me laugh my BUTT off. And, people, we have to assume that this story, which seems to be based on what Michael Moore's AGENT is saying, is actually the whole truth. There is an outside shot that Moore's AGENT is SPINNING the story to make his CLIENT look good. -=Mike
Ripper Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Um...the movie is made. All they have to do is advertise it through one of they sub-companys. Said Sub-Company WANTS to realese the move. I would see if they didn't want to greenlight it, but we are talking about a finished picture that they don't want to realease. Seeing the minimal cost it would be to release the movie, and the returns that they are most assuredly to get through DVD release alone(like BFC) it is obvious why they are doing it.
AndrewTS Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 The word "documentary" is, I'm sure, being used loosely. Certainly. Oh yeah, I get it. Censorship is okay if someone is saying something that you don't agree with. Government censorship I disagree with. This is a publicly-traded business that may or may not be acting within their legal right to forbid distribution. A senior Disney executive elaborated that the company had the right to quash Miramax's distribution of films if it deemed their distribution to be against the interests of the company. The executive said Mr. Moore's film is deemed to be against Disney's interests not because of the company's business dealings with the government but because Disney caters to families of all political stripes and believes Mr. Moore's film, which does not have a release date, could alienate many. "It's not in the interest of any major corporation to be dragged into a highly charged partisan political battle," this executive said. Maybe, maybe not. I guess that's up to the courts to decide. I think that it's pathetic that a documentary is censored in this way so that the house of mouse can save a few bucks in tax breaks. Because that's the ONLY possible reason... I mean, surley they knew of Moore's previous work when Miramax agreed to finance it. That's a good point, although it could be a case of a large corporation not knowing what one part of it is doing. You know how corporate red tape is. I hope that this doen't effect the overseas distribution in any way. "Overseas rights have been sold to a number of companies, executives said."
Stephen Joseph Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Could be Ripper, but could not be. Neither you nor I have the numbers, but plenty of times movie that have been produced have been halted and not distributed.
Betty Houle Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 The movie will make money, much like his last one did. And it will be released, just by a different company. Miramax has done this before when Disney wouldn't allow them to release a movie. It's definitely on my list of top 5 most anticipated movies of the year!
2GOLD Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Moore isn't exactly the most popular guy on the planet with either side right now. And it's not that they are seeming him as controversial, they are just seeming him as a giant windbag ass. BFC was the greatest comedy ever, because never before have I seen a bigger jackass who doesn't know he's a jackass. I had the sudden urge to go out and buy 5 or 6 guns after that film.
Skywarp! Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 I've been meaning to see that, actually, but I know when I do that I'm going to want to shoot Moore. I happen to like guns a lot. The movie isn't as much pro-gun control rhetoric as it is a study on why we have such a violent culture. On that basis, it's worth you give it a look.
