Jones vs. Tarver

So...Which title was on the line?

Perhaps Jones was looking ahead for the potential Tyson fight that he overlooked Tarver?

I like the beginning when the ref asked "Any questions?" and Tarver asked Jones what excuse was going to be this time.

Tarver: "What's your excuse tonight, Roy?" I laughed out loud.

I'm a happy man. Took a risk, bet $100 on Tarver with a couple of friends, will be $100 richer on Monday.

I should've taped it, just to see the knockout again.

:) I hate Roy Jones Jr, but I still give him respect.

I've been waiting for Roy Jones Jr. to get knocked out for years. Great fighter, but such an arrogant punk that I couldn't wait for someone to take him out. Antonio Tarver is my new hero!

I can't wait for the HBO replay next week.

I know 2 different titles were on the line, I just don't know which ones they were. In boxing, unless you are a buff, it's difficult to keep up with all the different boxing organizations.

Roy Jones Jr shouldn't have overlooked Tarver. He barely fucking beat him the first time out. I think age and cockiness finally caught up to him. This knockout will either make him seriously consider retirement or get him to step up his fights.

No, both the WBA and WBC titles were on the line.

Tarver is the first boxer I saw get in a ring with Jones that wasn't buying the hype of "pound for pound". Tarver went in and kicked his ass again, only this time he finished him off.

I'm not shocked it happened, Jones Jr slides up and down weight classes so much I'd imagine even his body is confused what the hell he's fighting.

I am shocked that it was the second round. Lets hope Jones Jr doesn't go on a Mike Tyson type spiral from grace now.

Charles Barkley is so ignorant that you have to love him.

I have to see this fight now. I was kind of interested in it, but I'm shocked right now. Roy Jones better come back from this in a big way because this is his first real professional loss. This ruins his aura of invincibility.

The fight should air on Saturday on HBO, that is the usual practice following PPV fights. It should replay 2-3 times next weekend, so be sure to check the listings.

I should have gone to a sportsbar to see this fight, but I had already made plans for saturday......dammit.

I watched the first fight, and while I agree that RJJ won the fight, it was obvious to the eye that RJJ had a hard time dealing with the shots that Tarver was throwing at him in the middle rounds.

From what reports say, RJJ did come out looking sharp, beating Tarver to the punch which is classic RJJ, but Tarver just had perfect anticipation and landed one of those "perfect shots" for the KO.

Personally, I think RJJ should walk away now, he will retire as one of the best ever, and this latest loss to Tarver really doesn't do anything to tarnish that. I don't think it would be wise of RJJ to try and get a fight with any heavyweight that can actually punch with power, unlike Ruiz.

As far as Tarvar, well he is already 35, but he doesn't really show it in the ring. I wouldn't mind seeing him move in weight to maybe setup some fights with, De La Hoya, Hopkins, Vargas, and the newly UNretired, Felix "Tito" Trinidad......

Anyone wanting to see the fight should check out BitTorrent. Suprnova.org has the fight, albeit with terrible sound quality. Nonetheless, I was shocked as all hell to see Jones get knocked out. The rematch will no doubt be a great fight.

I think that Roy Jones is one the best fighters to come out in my generation. But my biggest complaint, and maybe what proved to be his undoing in this fight, is that Roy Jones hand picked many of his opponents. And many were chosen based on Jones' belief that the was going to win. So I do not question his ability, nor do I think that Jones in his prime would have ever lost regardless of the oppanent, but I do think that not fighting all the best fighters he could have did hurt him in this case. Especially when he came across an Tarver, who gave him all that he could handle in the first fight. And Tarver came back more hungry, and we all saw the end result. Jones finally fought an opponent that matched up well, and it is my guess did not have enough close fights in his career to allow him to trully prepare for this fight. Sure he had a lost on his record before this fight, but that was due to a DQ. Jones was the superior fighter, and that is why in the rematch, Jones won handily.

I think that one advantage to fighting tough oppanents is that it keeps you on your toes. It forces you to fight your best, or you will lose. Jones I have heard, might not have fought every tough opponent that he could have, nor did it appear that he wanted to. Heck even the time he beat the Heavyweight Ruiz, which I will give him credit for beating a much larger oppanent, still was a fight that Jones knew he was going to win. Ruiz is a slug who just happens to fight in division which does not have the best boxers in it at the moment. Jones was not going to lose that fight, even being outweighed. No way in hell would he have ever fought someone like Lewis, now that would be an ugly mismatch.

Now I am not a big boxing fan, and maybe there was not a whole lot of competition for Jones, but from what I have heard on talk radio from boxing experts (I believe the expert I heard was a well respected trainer, who trained Hitman Hearns amoung others) explained Jones believed that the best way to cement his legacy as one of the greatest ever, was to fight the fights he knew he was going to win, or at least have a very distinct advantage. And this would allow Jones to show off all of his ability. And watching Jones outbox his opponents is a thing of beauty, that is for sure.

And Jones won using this strategy. But I do think that it hurt him in the case of Tarver, who Jones might not have taken serious. The fight ends in controversy, Jones has to take the rematch, and Tarver this time ended any doubt who the better fighter was on that night. But imagine if Jones had fought the very best, maybe losing one or two close fights for example, then I think he might have taken Tarver more serious and he beats Tarver so that there was no controversy from the first fight. And in then Jones does not need to do the rematch. But, he did, and he got "Knocked the F@#$ Out". Welcome back to reality Jones, your reign as one of the best might be comming to an end.

Oh well, that is the cool thing about boxing, on any given night, a good blow will bring down even the greatest of boxers. But, this lost will not change my opinion on Jones, he is great fighter, but a little too cocky for his own good. But heck, Lennox Lewis got knocked out by an boxer who had no business beating him, Mike Tyson career tailspin to rock bottom began with Buster Douglas, who had no business winning any championship, connecting with a nasty left hook, and those are just two of many examples of how one punch can win a fight. You don't take your opponent serious and your chance of losing goes way up.

Bad analogy with Tyson. He started going downwards when Cus D'Amato died. That loss was an eventuality, as he was totally unfocused, and Buster fought the fight of his life. He didn't get lucky.

Lewis is a better example.

If Jones got tagged..oh well. It's a first. I'm positive he'll win the rubber match. If not, phew..

Fight a comeback fight and pack it in as a former p4p and alphabet champ and millionaire.

Tyson fell to oblivion when he replaced his trainers with the thugs from the Nation of Islam who were basically a gang of Tyson Yes-Men.

So I woke up Sunday morning and got the Tarver-Jones news via ESPN's BottonLine. Now as a boxing fan, I know the importance of this fight, so I'm like "Oh shit!" Now I'm waiting to see it on Sportscenter, and guess what? It's the No. 2 story of the day, right after the Lakers-Spurs game! That's almost unheard of for a boxing match getting play on Sportscenter. But guess what else? They only showed the fucking still photos!

Does this annoy anyone else? I kinda see why PPV companies don't want to give away something that was on PPV for free the next day, but look at this way: allowing Sportscenter to show the video could have brought in more buyers for the next PPV and the next one after that. Millions of people watch Sportscenter, more than the numbers of people who bought the Jones-Tarver fight. Now these viewers see ESPN calling this one of the biggest upsets in modern times (that's what the anchor actually said), yet all they get to see is photos. But imagine the numbers of fans they could attract to boxing by simply showing the KO punch? Trust me, moving pictures stand out more than still ones.

I'm not sure who makes these calls: the cable companies, the PPV carriers, the promoters...I don't know. But to me it seems like allowing boxing to get more mainstream exposure would draw in more fans. Trust me, one reason ESPN doesn't even mention some PPV title fights is because they can't use the video. Even for HBO/SHowtime fight, you can tell the cable company doesn't let them show the "important" parts of the fight. This seems so counterproductive to me. The real boxing fan will buy the fight anyway, even if they know ESPN will show the highlights. I mean, we watch the Super Bowl even though that is highlighted to death, don't we? But to draw in casual viewers, someone in boxing needs to change the current policy.

I wrote about that in another board. That is exactly the nonsense that is killing boxing right now. Promoters have an incessant need to sell everything they can get their dirty little hands on. Fights in Vegas in front of $1,500 seats shown on PPV for $50 do little to entice the average fan. Boxing is the only sport where you have to PAY to see championship events.

How would you make money if you were a boxing promoter?
