converge241 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Charles Barkley to Monday Night Football? ABC wants to add some basketball to its "Monday Night Football." Executives at the Walt Disney Co. network have "informally" inquired whether former NBA star Charles Barkley would be interested in joining the network's flagship sports program, ABC and his agent said. "We've been approached about doing something," agent Marc Perman said in a telephone interview, declining to discuss specifics. Barkley is an analyst on TNT's "Inside the NBA." The addition of Barkley, who once responded to complaints from an animal rights group by eating a hamburger on the air, would be another attempt by ABC to bolster ratings with a high- profile announcer without a football background. Barkley would follow comedian Dennis Miller, who was fired after the 2001 season when his highbrow wisecracks failed to draw viewers. "Monday Night Football has always been that mix of sports and entertainment, so this makes sense," said Jay Rosenstein, a former vice president at CBS Sports. "He's got the wit and a sense of fun -- everything you look for in a broadcaster." Mike Pearl, senior vice president of ABC Sports, said he and the 41-year-old Barkley have had "casual chatter" about a "Monday Night Football" post, most recently at the NBA All-Star game in February

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Could be worse....... it could be Screamin A. Smith.
Sass 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Charles is a smart guy (for the most part). He *has* to realize this has "bomb" written all over it. Just put Dan Fouts back in the booth.
Ripper 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 I don't think that Charles would take that job. He KNOWs better.
Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted May 19, 2004 What in Gods green earth?! Barkley is garbage! He doesn't add anything to 'Inside the NBA', why would you think he could add something to MNF? He is just an annoying twat, and if he was absent of TNT, things would be alot better there. I hope this dosn't happen.. because if it does, it's just another reason NOT to watch. Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Why don't they just ask Dave Chapelle?
Sass 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 If ABC wants a brother in the booth, then go with Ronnie Lott. The man is *very* comfortable in front of the camera and is extremely articulate. He'd be a nice getaway from Madden and Michaels' "good ol' boys" vibe they give me in the booth.

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 I'd rather they get OJ Simpson back on the show than put Chaz Barkley up there. Barkley joining Mumbles and Michaels in the booth would be enough to make me not listen to the games anymore. (/gently caresses the mute button)
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 With Madden giving such insight as "It's a lot harder coming back from 21-0 than 14-0", Barkley will fit right in and maybe he'll ignore the game and give us other sports info from around the world. Like who is winning a big cricket match, or some soccer scores as the game goes along. Get Jose Canseco, he'll be fun.

sfaJack 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 I just heard on the radio that Barkley has turned ABC down. Supposedly, his quote was "The only thing I know about football is the point spreads."

Guest Redhawk Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Why doesn't ABC instead focus on getting better games on MNF instead of taking the usual suspects -- Niners, Cowboys, Rams, Broncos, Packers -- every week, no matter if they suck or not.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Hey while we're at it let's add Deion Sanders to ABC's NBA commentating team! And let's go ahead and stick Wayne Gretzky out there to commentate on ESPN Baseball games!
LaParkaMarka 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2004 Why can't ABC just "promote" somebody from ESPN? NO. The ESPN announcers are beyond terrible, easily the worst NFL announcers I have had the displeasure of listening to. They could get the fake commentary from the ESPN videogames and it would be better than those losers.

Guest Crazy Dan Report post Posted May 20, 2004 Well Charles is a very entertaining person. And knows a whole lot about basketball, but the question is, how much does he know about football? Is this going to be another Dennis Miller fiasco, where Dennis would try to use his type of humor that would end going over the heads of most of the audiance while at the same time asking so many questions that you know Al Michaels was ready to smack him over the head for being a twit, or will Charles do his homework, and be able to actually add something to the broadcast, and be funny as well. I am not sure about this one. Aren't there any former football players who are funny, and would be better suited for the MNF team? But you never know, but I could see this being one or two year experiment at best, before they get someone new. I know that ABC will try to do anything to build ratings, but this one just has the makings of "What is Wrong with this Picture". I personally think that you should stick to the sport that you played as a pro, with some exceptions to the rules of course, but I just don't know about this one. Of course, there are some former players who suck as well as football announcers, such as Dan Fouts. So you never know, and maybe Charles will have great chemestry with Madden and Michaels. So I guess I will give them a chance to see what they can do before passing judgement, but boy this has a feeling out of the Twilight Zone doesn't it? Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted May 21, 2004 Why doesn't ABC instead focus on getting better games on MNF instead of taking the usual suspects -- Niners, Cowboys, Rams, Broncos, Packers -- every week, no matter if they suck or not. Who are you suggesting then? Cowboys and Niners haven't gotten that many games, neither have the Broncos recently. Rams only get them because they're wildly erratic and a fun team to watch, and the Packers are the only team you're virtually guaranteed to be in playoff contention since they have been for a good 12 years or so, plus they have probably the largest international fan base from what I remember. Who are you suggesting? The Browns? The Seahawks? The Jaguars? I think MNF has done a great job scheduling matchups, last season had a few duds yes, but a couple GREAT games, like the Colts-Bucs in Week 3 (I think it was Week 3 anyways). Charles is THE reason to watch basketball on TNT. he isn't afraid to make predictions on something and isn't afraid to admit he was wrong when he is. Plus he calls Earnie and Kenny's name more than Danny Glover called "riggs" name in the Lethal Weapon series. Now that is just funny.
