Bill Cosby lays the smack down

Recommended Posts

Ripper - Realizing that there are just as many blacks with a grasp of English as there are whites.

Of course that is true, but that is not the topic. This is:

“Comedian Bill Cosby embarrassed the National Association For Advancement Of Colored People (NAACP) at a gala on Monday - by attacking lower class African-Americans. The legendary star was speaking in Washington DC to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling.”

The discussion for this thread refers to lower class African-Americans.

<--- grew up Lower class African American.

<--- grew up around nothing but lower class African Americans.

<--- realizes that most lower class African Americans do have a grasp of English language.

Here is a shocker, for a lot of broke people, college isn't a option at first. THAT is why you see a huge number of african amercian youth going to the military to get money for college.

And god knows that being articulate isn't the only thing that will get you a job.

Fuck rich people who say that "the only reason you are poor is because you are lazy and won't work for it" or in this case "the only reason you are broke is because you would rather get expensive shoes and can't speak English"

Its a TAD bit more complicated than that.

Urban Blacks have the same problem that Southern Whites and Catholics have, we can't keep the dumbest of our number off television. When the media hits the streets for interviews, they never latch onto the well-spoken or intelligent. They grab onto the most ignorant, 'funniest' person they can find for some comments. God knows that we can't interview someone from the South without them wearing a white tanktop, a black man without gold teeth, or a Catholic that doesn't want to burn the unbelievers.

For what its worth, white trash usually speak with grammar that is almost, if not as, bad as the stuff Cosby is talking about.

And white trash's level of impact on the overall culture is virtually nil...

Speak for yourself, hippie.

Look at Jerry Springer.

Look at Maurey Povich.

Look at COPS.

Look at Wal-Mart.

Funny enough, I read this thread at work, and then went to Best Buy on the way home, and over heard some little white trash kid (9-10 y/o) saying that he had to get his "bling-bling"

Best of both worlds, right there

Uhhhhhhhh? What world are you living in?

I simply believe that a majority of Americans make fun of EVERY accent that comes along, while believing that they have none to speak of. This is why in our entertainment there are so many brooding criminal masterminds in movies have British accents, Aussies are aways tawkin with da extray doubawyews, and despite increased awareness of what Canada is really like, many shows and movies still portray manyCanadians as speaking like the McKenzies.

Except Colin Powell started out in New York's streets as a young man.

Again, this isn't something affecting everyone from a lower class, nor is it hardly reflective of the race as a whole.

I think Bill must've had some bad pudding or something. Bitter Bill is right to an extent, but he went overboard with the last paragraph of his comments. Bill doesn't seem to have faith in us (blacks), because I know a lot of blacks (including myself) coming from a lower class family manage to get a college education. I hate when whites try to ridicule blacks for "our slang" which they usually end taking up sayings (i.e. Bling Bling) anyway, but yet whites have their own slang/lingo like: "Sweet," "Score," and etc. I use slang alot, but I know there's a time and a place to use it. When I go to interviews, I use proper grammar I don't say "Dawg" or "What up playa." I agree with Bill, but I wish he didn't say that out in public because whites will just make assumptions and have misconceptions about blacks. (i.e some people in this thread)

So according to Billy...we shouldn't care if someone is killed for stealing a Coke? It's a fucking misdemeanor. If cops are shooting people in the back of the head for a misdemeanor, there's a fucking problem.

I seem to recall a young Bill Cosby using slang in several movies.

How in Gods name is an internet debate going to ruin your chance of nailing a white chick?

No......I'm white and I want to nail a black girl.

If this internet debate is represenative of the views of America.....then I'm not going to get it!

No, I meant Bill shouldn't have said that to the media, because some whites will have misconceptions.

So?

Do you think Bill's comments made a single white person change their views?

Do you think a white guy dropped out of the NAACP to join the KKK?

Cosby stated an opinion on a problem that he sees facing the black communuity. More power to him. If I heard white guys down here telling people to get over the Civil War because a) it was 140 years ago and b) we were on the wrong side (morally more so than just that we lost), I'd APPLAUD them for doing so.

Occasionally, the only way to make people who don't WANT to listen hear you is to shame them publicly.

A black man saying what he thinks is a problem in the black community is not going to lead a stunning increase in racism. His points were hardly invalid and seeing as how the man stressed education constantly in his career, they were quite consistent for him.

I think the issue is that what he was saying was supposed to be about class (i.e. lower class, kids in the slum, etc) but wound up being about race.

There's no denying black people themselves are making fun of that kind of speech, but I've just accepted it as an accent and moved on.

Thing is, bad grammar is bad grammar. I have worked hard to avoid using "Y'all" liberally in my speech because it just makes people sound like bleeding idiots when they say it.

When people say that when Southerners say things like "Y'all", it makes them sound like morons --- I can't disagree. It does.

There is proper grammar and excusing bad grammar is not a good thing. Cosby, for his faults, has ALWAYS preached education --- according to the kids on "The Cosby Show", he rode ALL of them to go to college --- so his criticisms are consistent.

Everything he said was true. A lot of people think the same things he said, but most people don't have the guts to say it in public.

Black people scream about how horrible racism is and how they are oppressed, but many blacks in the US don't do anything to better themselves. They make no effort at all. When you act like a thug and you speak like you're from the gutter, then people will treat you like trash.

And I have no problem with criminals getting shot and killed. This country needs to be tougher on criminals, not more compassionate.

I work in an urban black community.

I would say the "not trying to better themselves" part applies more to America's youth than African Americans in general. Kids with bad economic standing are more likely to embrace the hip-hop culture when they have nothing else to reach for in life. I'm not saying hip-hop is bad, but the message of "live in excess" sets a bad example for those that will never have such luxuries. Drugs and violence can be a direct result of that mentality.

Cosby's words are justified. He just presents the voice of an elder generation watching the moral foundation of the culture they established decline.

There are always bad apples in every culture. Eliminate the bad apples before generalizing a whole race as lazy.

As for urban slang, there was a good article I read that compared it to the slang African American slaves would speak in the 1800's. The slaves created the slang in order to survive in a white-dominated world.

Today, urban slang is used for roughly the same purpose. To survive on the streets.

Bill Cosby's the man. More power to him. :)

You...are an I.D.I.O.T.

The man goes on stage and says that it's not a big deal for a cop to kill someone over Petty Theft and other such things.

Wether or not you're in favor of stiffer penalities for criminals (which I am btw.) it's still a completely inappropriate thing to say and only tarnished whatever minor legacy the man has.

EDIT: Give up Rip. Just give up.
