I'm doing a speech about this for school so can some of you give me a rundown of where Kerry stands on Civil Liberties for US citiziens and on the Patriot Act? I've only found a few things on Civil Liberties, but not much about the Patriot Act.

I know that Kerry has a one-fingered response to people that ask about the irony of him spending Memorial Day at the Vietnam War Memorial considering that he threw his medals over the White House fence when he got back from the war.

That's KIND OF related to his stance of Freedom of Speech I guess...

First off Deebo, you're better off posting stuff like this in the Education Folder, otherwise it'll get politicized when your real purpose is simple information.

Second off, you're best starting off at Kerry's site. Here is a speech and two statement he made about the Patriot Act and John Ashcroft. Basically, he thinks the Act itself is ok (you should note he was one of the 99 Senators that voted for it) but he thinks the way it has been executed by Ashcroft has been very poor. Here are a few more articles for you. Hope this helps, if not feel free to contact me.

P.S. Repeat after me children. Google-is-your-friend.

Just about everything executed by Ashcroft has been very poor

Are you aware of the whole situation regarding that? He wasn't asked if he thought it was ironic blah blah blah, a guy in a Hanoi John shirt told him to leave. If someone was that blatant to me, I'd do the same, even with the press watching.

the guy he flipped off is Mr. Ted Sampley.

Sampley also suggested that John McCain was a KGB agent and he's considered a bit out there.

Is there anything that tells you that he's not lying again?

I would too but Kerry is running for President. He has to ignore the guy. It's things like that that led to Dean's undoing in the primaries. Kerry isn't the most likable guy and he needs to avoid coming off like an asshole at all costs even in situations like this.

Mad Dog hit it on the head. This guy being a dick is no excuse for Kerry doing something completely un-Presidential in public. Most other candidates in that situation would have ignored the guy or come back with a flip remark.

I'm already referring to Kerry as "Senator McGovern" because I think that this campaign is going to get laughably bad by the end. I mean, Bush is having one of the worst runs of luck for a re-election year on record, right up there with Jimmy Carter and the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1980, and Kerry hasn't been able to do anything with it.

Once things turn around for Bush sometime in the next few months (internationalizing the effort in Iraq, finding Bin Ladin or other top Al Qaeda leaders, oil prices drop dramatically after the Summer driving season ends, etc.), Kerry's going to be up shit creek because he'll have lost golden opportunities.

At the same time, if he doesn't do anything about it looks like either it's working or he can't deny their message.

Besides, it's nothing compared to what Clinton was doing, and voters didn't mind that either.

BTW, a Google News search shows that the only two places that are reporting this in a serarch for Kerry "middle finger" are NewsMax and WashTimes quoting NewsMax's article. I rest my case.

But Clinton was a likable guy. He could get away with doing things like this from time to time. Kerry doesn't have that same padding so he has to either brush the guy off or tell him now isn't the time for such things. By giving the guy the finger he comes across like a dick and that hurts his image when people aren't terribly fond of him to begin with.

He allegedly served in Vietnam.

Can someone tell me Kerry's stance on ANYTHING?

He's a war hero, or at least that's what I read on the Internet.

EDIT: And speaking of this guy, I keep hearing on the radio the DVD release of the third Matrix movie, and they play this clip with someone saying "Mr. Anderson" and it sounds just like Kerry! (I don't watch the Matrix movies so I don't know which character said it...)

Can we call Kerry's political stance a Rohrschach test for the political set?

You can see almost anything you want in it.

If I'm not mistaken, John Kerry voted against the Patriot Act before he voted for it.

WRONG!

He loves it --- but his family hates it.
