This pains me as everyone in my family owes Reagan (and Carter for that matter) a great deal of thanks for giving hope and opportunity to the hundreds of thousands of Cubans who came over here looking for a chance to better themselves.

 

I hate to see this man pass away before Castro.

Isn't Castro in pretty dire conditions now neways?

He's supposedly been in pretty dire conditions for years now but the bastard keeps on living.

 

Making a big deal about a dictator who was in control of Iraq since 1979. Bah. Castro has been doing it since 1959 and they're only 90 miles away.

 

Of course even if Fidel dies, his "younger" brother who is also in his 70s or so, Raul is even worse (the Pope visit a few years back supposedly softened him up a bit) and they'd have to wait for him to die also before there is a possiblity the communist regime will end.

 

Either that, or an invasion.

I doubt the US will ever even really try to overthrow Castro, as I have no doibt at all they could do and with ease.

The Cuban-exile lobby would lose ALOT of their power and influence if Cuba suddenly became a democracy and was no longer a "threat" to the US.

The Cuban exile lobby will pack up and move back to Cuba if that was the case. America doesn't want to invade because it has nothing to profit from the invasion.

 

Or else if they were the "liberators and protectors of the free world" they might have done so by now. Oh wait, there was the Bay of Pigs I guess..

This is the first Presidential death that has ever really affected me. Sure, Nixon died in 1994, but no offense, he came and went before my time. Reagan was the leader of the country during my formative years, and I associated him with "President" for years and years. He may have been the conservative poster boy for years and years and even today, but I still loved the guy, as he was too darned nice to dislike.

Didn't agree with his politics but he had alot of charisma and was a decent actor.

Reagans charisma was extraordinary... you just couldn't help but like him, at least personally if not politically. I grew up during the Reagan years and I remember, from the very beginning, looking up to him... and I for one am glad that I grew up during the Reagan years instead of the Clinton years. He gave the office an aura of dignity which hasn't been seen since.

I was interested to notice that his Widow is a big proponent of stem cell research.

 

For me, anything that can bring about a vaccine or cure for Alzheimer's would be a blessing. My grandfather's deterioration was so painful for my father, uncle, and grandmother; no one should have to experiance that from either side.

 

I suppose there are worse ways to go, but I can't think of many.

On a side note, I had a dream around the time of Nixon's death that always stayed with me. It dealt with Regan living to be 101.

 

For a while I thought it might just happen.

 

Either way, he had a good life. I'm sad I never met him though.

Okay, let me first say that it's sad whenever anyone dies. Though I disliked several aspects about him, I am saddened by the loss.

 

However, what is irritating for me is that this is the only news story right now. And I live in Australia, not the US. I see no reason for the death of a man who was in power of a foreign country 15 years ago. Surely there is something else happening in the world somewhere.

It will be interesting to see who turns out for the funeral services. I expect several world leaders and old time actors and wouldn't be surprised to see some athletes as well. He had a hand in just about everything except for music at one time or another.

FS, I can't imagine who wouldn't show up. Even his opponents, such as Tip O'Neill (who is dead now, I think) seemed to like the guy.

Can't say I'm really sad...his life was miserable with his health issues for so long and he lived 93 years and did more than so many more people probably ever will. He did everything he was going to do and more...and may he rest in peace.

Man, even though he was President when I was too young to know much about him, and that he's been basically dead and deteriorating for almost 10 years now, this still feels so sad. We could use a man like Ronald Regan in the white house today. He lived an extraordinary life and carried the office with class and made it ok to be an American. It's good that he doesn't have to suffer any longer, and it is truly tragic that a man that once held such power was a reduced to a state where he wasn't even aware. I've been watching some old Regan speeches on the TV they've been playing and his style is just so personal and relaxed with a good sense of humor. RIP President Regan!

True, but not as President. He was a charasmatic man who easily drew the trust of others, but he made alot of stupid decisions. Reaganomics cost my father a Christmas bonus one year and in return cost me a trip to Disney World in the following summer. We could however use a man like him as a foreign diplomat. The Soviet Union and Communism falling were mainly because of this man and Gorbachov(sp?). From all accounts Reagan and Clinton were the most charasmatic presidents of the 20th century(JFK could attract women but wasn't all that good at attracting the trust of foreign nations).

What I mean is to fight the War on Terrorism. The man had a plan to win the Cold War and it worked. He set goals and he stuck to them. It's a combination of admiration of his foreign policy skills with the somewhat ineptness of our current President's...

This to this post and MikeSC's post too. No, I don't want it just mentioned in passing, and I appreciate his importance in world history.

 

However, I find the fact that it was the only news story incredibly irritating. It can be the headline story, but to be the only story is a bit over the top. If Thatcher died I doubt it would be the only news story here, nor in the US. Similarly, if Gough Whitlam (probably Australia's most important Prime Minister in history, from 1972-5) were to die, I'd expect it to be the headline news, but not the only news story. Same with Nelson Mandela if he died. Yes, they're incredibly important people in the history of the world, but the rest of the news shouldn't be just not told because of it.
