Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2004 It's been picking up steam as of late, as what I thought was just gonna be some small time independant blip on the radar, it's been advertised on TV often from what I can tell, and many other people who would have never heard of it otherwise seem to be talking about it. The fact that Roger Ebert gave it ***1/2 will definitely bring it some attention, whether one likes Ebert or not, and I most of the time don't. The fact is though, that perhaps the most well known standard for movie critiques would be "Two Thumbs Up". I was looking forward to seeing it before, but now I am even moreso. For those who don't know, the movie is about a teen girl who gets pregnant at a Christian High School, and the ensuing chaos when all the fundamentalist students try to "Save" her, the leader being Mandy Moore (Yes I know it's a Mandy Moore flick). Still, the movie looks pretty funny. The only thing I'm worried about is that the ending may be too predictable, judging by what all other movies made in a similar mold would tell you, but seeing as how I haven't seen it, I guess I can't say anything. Useless fact: The movie was produced by Michael Stipe.

Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2004 Well I never said I saw it before, but it comes out tomorrow. I've been trying to d/l it, but on Kazaa it seems to keep cancelling is taking FOREEEEEEEEEEEEVER. It's probably a fake anyway. I guess I should just shell out the thirteen dollars and see it in theater.

Guest thebigjig Report post Posted June 11, 2004 Jerry Fallwell says it's the most hateful Christian bashing movie to come out of hollywood in years... of course, that's complete bullshit, but hey... if Fallwell hates it, then that's a good enough reason for me to go see it
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted June 11, 2004 It does look good and I want to see it, but it'll most likely be a DVD viewing for me. Mandy Moore is gonna end up getting type cast, if she keeps doing these wholesome goody two shoes roles. She needs to start playing some slutty or out of control characters. Of course, I don't know if she could make herself believable in such a role.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2004 I think the role of being the stupid blond slut is already taken by several so being the wholesome goody two shoes role fits her at the moment.

Are those the only two possible sorts of characters for barely-legal teenage actresses? Wait, wait, wait--there's also "nerdy chick," "nerdy hot chick," "gluttonous fat chick," and "goth chick." We can't unfairly write off the creativity movie-makers exhibit when they create roles for young actresses.

Include "goth chick" with what I said. When I said "slut", I didn't mean stereotypical stupid airhead blonde bimbo. I don't want to see that type of slut. Of the character types mentioned, I'd like to see her play a out of control party girl or "goth chick". Perhaps this all plays into me wanting to corrupt the wholesome Mandy Moore. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2004 That's quite evil of you. While I wouldn't condone it, if I wanted to do such a thing I'd cast her opposite of millionaire skank supreme Paris Hilton. Any movie with her in a role requiring her to act surely would be the work of Satan himself.

I was gambling at the MGM Grand when I saw a trailer for this on a big LED jumbotron they have in a part of the casino (which is so huge that a room with a jumbotron is only "part of the casino.") It was interesting enough to pull me away from looking at my game of Wild Cherry, although "Coffee And Cigarettes" interested me more.

Based on what I've seen and heard, in this movie she plays someone who likes to think she is a good person, but is really a bitch. Guess we'll see..... Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2004 13 bucks? for a god damn movie? Ten for a student, thirteen for an adult. I guess I should've said ten. It's expensive in the Tdot... She is a bitch in this movie, it's essentially the opposite of her character in A Walk To Remember. Both Christian girls, but they represent different ends of the spectrum. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2004 The Commercial for it where the girl says "I'm filled with the love of God" or something like that and then throws a Bible at the other girl cracks me up every time. They should have taken a page from "You got served!" and called it "You got saved!" though..

Of course, I don't know if she could make herself believable in such a role. On 411, I noticed in Chasing Liberty, she IS playing a slut. Well, she's more of a wannabe slut exhibitionist, and there are very other obvious sexual perversions by other characters. Regardless, I guess neither you or I were familiar with her body of work. I guess I wasn't wrong about how her leg is draped across that dude's thigh didn't seem too innocent.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted June 17, 2004 I saw this movie this afternoon and I throughly enjoyed it. It was a hilarious satire of Christianity. Malone was good as usual but Moore was great in her role. Amazingly, I was able to shake "Home Alone" out from seeing Mackuly Culkin in a wheel chair. High recomendations

godthedog 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 i thought it was okayish. i won't go on about the ending (which was HORRID), but it overall didn't know if it wanted to be a funny drama about real people struggling with religion through the hardships in their lives, or an exaggerated satire of new-age jesus freaks. they took some characters from the former (like jena malone), some characters from the latter (mandy moore, in a TOTALLY thankless, one-dimensional role, who serves no function whatsoever other than to be the evil bitch we're supposed to root against). some characters flip-flopped between the two. the pastor was a well-drawn character with tensions & depth & such...except when the script needed a straw man to point out everything that's wrong with fundamentalism, and he became a stupid little talking head. the satire was overdone and tried way too hard to be clever. the "message" was really preachy. good cast, though. i got a kick out of seeing patrick fugit, macaulay culkin, mandy moore, and heather matazarro's cleavage all in the same movie. i didn't recognize matazarro at all until an hour and a half into the movie, and then i went "wait a minute...THAT'S dawn wiener?" she and culkin have some really good chemistry. (dear god do i feel dirty for saying that.)
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 "good cast, though. i got a kick out of seeing patrick fugit, macaulay culkin, mandy moore, and heather matazarro's cleavage all in the same movie. " Isn't Macaulay Culkin like 35 now? Anyway, sounds about like what I expected. Not as "sacriligious" as the fundies say, but seems to be pretty intolerant at points. However, I do kind of wonder what the point is of casting Mandy and making her a stock antagonist character. *shrug* I guess Dogma is still the best religious satire out there, in part because of Catholicism having so many institutions and traditions begging for it. Protestantism is so splintered it's hard to focus on that stuff. Were there any heated arguments over which way you can baptize some one? Or how about whether one can "lose" salvation or not? LJSexay 0 Report post Posted June 19, 2004 I loved the movie... call me krazy ;D but the plot was pretty good, everyone did a great job in their roles, AND... I almost sorta forgot about Kulkin being in the film. It was so weird.
