The Lakers are asking too much for Shaq. What will be the next offer Jermaine O'Neal, Reggie Miller, Ron Artest and a 2nd round pick for Shaq?

If the Heat want to make a run for a championship now the easiest way to do that is to get Shaq, though trading away Odom, Grant and Butler to get him would leave them crippled should anything happen to O'Neal, and if/when Shaq leaves them after however long they'll be left with Wade and not much else.

The Odom/Butler/Wade combination they have now is only going to get better, and when they reach their peaks along with a good point guard and center down the line they may be in position to challenge for a title anyway, and they'll be competitive for a longer period of time than the Shaq deal, which will give them a short window before it'll likely be back to rebuilding again.

Odom went from a headcase complainer to leading his team to the playoffs......see what happens when a good player leaves the Clippers. You can expect Q to have a good season with his new team.

Unrestricted free agent guard Brent Barry will sign a four-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs for between $22 and $24 million, a source told ESPN's David Aldridge.

The 32-year-old Barry chose the Spurs over a four-year offer for the full mid-level exception from the Portland Trail Blazers, in part because he thought the Spurs were closer to contending for a championship. Barry also turned down a three-year offer worth $18 million from his former team, the Seattle Sonics, wanting a four-year offer.

Barry's signing completes a strong 48-hour period for the Spurs; they agreed to terms on Thursday with guard Manu Ginobili. The Spurs will now have a three-guard rotation of Tony Parker, Ginobili and Barry, who can play both guard positions.

The Spurs are now expected to complete their offseason spending by re-signing forward Bruce Bowen, who opted out of the last year of his contract. Bowen is expected to receive a three-year deal from San Antonio worth $9 million.

Now that the Sonics have lost Barry, discussions they were having with the Rockets about trading guard Antonio Daniels for draft picks probably will end as well.

Good deal for the Spurs.

So do you think Ginobli or Barry will start at SG?

If I'm Miami I tell LA to go fuck themself. LA isn't in the driver's seat here as Kobe isn't going to wait forever to sign and Shaq wants out no matter what now. If I'm Miami I offer them Eddie Jones, Brian Grant, and a first and second round draft pick. Tell them to take it or leave it.

Don't even compare Lamar Odom to KG. Lamar Odom is no doubt a very good player, but he cannot lead a team like KG. He has a great all around game, and has improved his desire, but he will never be as good as KG.

Lamar Odom, Brian Grant, and #1 Draft Pick for Shaq seems like a fair deal.

They keep Dwayne Wade, who is their future franchise player, NOT LAMAR ODOM. And they get the best center in the NBA right now.

With Shaq they are instintly a NBA championship contender, and a Shaq-Wade combo could be alot better then Kobe-Shaq, because Wade's ego isn't as big as Kobe's.

If I was Miami I'd do it.

If the deal is Odom, Grant, and future #1, then I think it's worth it because you still have great perimeter players like Butler, Wade, and Eddie Jones around Shaq. Along with the emergence of Udonis Haslem, the Heat would instantly become at least Eastern Conference contenders.

From LA's side, it shores up PF with Malone not sure what he wants to do and gives them the solid 3 man in Odom that they have lacked for awhile. Odom can also play some 4 during small lineup changes or stretches where LA wants to go small.

I'm wary of this deal for both teams. Miami would be giving up too much, they'd essentially be giving up their best player in Odom for Shaq who isn't even LA's best player (though he would be if Kobe signed with another team). I think this would be a classic case of if this deal goes through, of going one step forward and two steps back, and it wouldn't quite work for either team since LA loses 300+ pounds in the middle with pretty much no backup, and Miami loses two of their best players and a possible good one.

If the trigger is pulled on this deal, it's kind of a toss-up what would happen. How does Miami deal with losing Odom and Grant? And how does LA deal with losing Shaq?

By the way, has LA come up with a backup plan for Shaq's departure yet? What are their options for replacing an aging, injury-prone, overweight center with an ego to match his size?

I just want to see Shaq try and run with Wade up and down the court every night.

The big question is who will miss more games next season Shaq or Wade?

Shaq going to come back in shape and have monster stats. He will score 34 Points Per Game and grab 15 Rebounds Per Game.

.......

"The Hawks will re-sign Jackson to a six-year, $44 million deal and then trade him to the Pacers for forward Al Harrington. The trade cannot take place until at least July 14th, per NBA rules. "

Good move by the Pacers. They finally get that shooter they've wanted.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I cannot live in a society where Brian Cardinal signs a 6 year $39 million contract. Goodbye, cruel world.

from ESPN.com...

Center is excited about Wade, Riley

Warm weather. Smaller centers. A star guard. Pat Riley. Life in South Florida sounds mighty nice to Shaq.

A source told ESPN's David Aldridge Saturday that the Lakers center has agreed to accept a proposed trade that would send him to the Miami Heat in exchange for guard Caron Butler and forwards Lamar Odom and Brian Grant.

The trade has not been finalized, but O'Neal has informed both the Lakers and Heat that he will not do anything to hinder the swap and would not opt out of his contract after next season.

The Lakers may be forced to take this proposal, as there are no other prospective deals on which O'Neal has signed off.

Dallas was the early front-runner to acquire O'Neal, but a Mavericks source seemed resigned Saturday to O'Neal's going to Miami. The source said that if the Heat can work out a contract extension for O'Neal when his current deal expires in two years, there is nothing the Mavs can do to thwart the trade.

Miami is one of five cities that O'Neal has told the Lakers would be acceptable to him.

Despite O'Neal's smiling denial to The Associated Press on Saturday afternoon that he had met with Heat president Pat Riley, sources told Aldridge that O'Neal apparently agreed to accept the trade after spending part of Saturday morning in Orlando meeting with Riley and Miami general manager Randy Pfund.

Apparently, Riley, Pfund and O'Neal's representatives met for three hours. O'Neal was not present for the entire meeting, but hit it off immediately with Riley.

"He feels this is the environment he wants," a source who was at the meeting said of O'Neal. Riley "was really good about understanding what Shaquille wanted to accomplish," the source said. "He was a great listener."

According to the source, O'Neal likes how Riley used Kareem Abdul-Jabbar later in Abdul-Jabbar's career and believes a return to the Eastern Conference, with its relative lack of big men, will help extend his career. O'Neal also was excited about the prospect of playing with second-year guard Dwyane Wade, who he feels is a special player.

"You don't have to go back too far to see a guard and Shaquille being able to do some damage, even with role players surrounding them," the source said, referring to O'Neal's early years in the league with Orlando, when he and Penny Hardaway helped lead the Magic to the Finals in 1995.

O'Neal will remain in Orlando until the deal is finalized.

On Friday night, ESPN's Jim Gray reported that the Lakers had OK'd their end of the deal and the decision to make the trade, including either Butler or a first-round pick, was now in the Heat's hands. The Riverside (Calif.) Press-Enterprise had reported Thursday on the initial talks between the teams.

------------------

Apparently it's almost a done deal that Shaq's off to Miami.

Why are the Heat giving up both Butler and Odom for the aging and never in shape Shaq? This is absurd. Shaq has said that he isn't going back to LA either way. The Lakers are not in the driver's seat here.

If Kobe and Karl wind up still in LA, I see the Lakers having a starting line up of:

G: Kobe, Gary Payton

F: Odom, Malone

C: Brian Grant

Not too bad a line up, but there bench will be absolute trash.

While that Laker lineup isn't bad, there is no way I'd play Grant at Center. He'd be better off starting over Malone and have Malone come off the bench.

I wonder if Malone and Grant have patched things up since 1999, when Malone smashed Grant in the grill and knocking some teeth out and Grant got up in Malone's face and was very upset about it both on and off the court.

If lakers resign Fisher and get Butler in the deal, there bench will consist of:

Derek Fisher

Devean George

Kareem Rush

Luke Walton

Rick Fox

Caron Butler

Not too bad of a bench

I said it once, I'll say it again. Miami should offer Grant, Eddie Jones, and a first round pick. Tell them take it or leave it and then have Shaq breathe down LA's neck to do it.

Butler and Walton are about the only things to get excited about on that bench. George is a washout, Fox is too old, and Fisher will be less effective without big Shaq there to draw double teams, making Fisher's shots off a bit more with a hand in his face.

I agree with this. Miami should not part with 2 of their top 3 guys (Odom, Butler, Wade) to get this done. Throw in Jones and a first rounder. That, or Miami better have some under the table deals going on with key free agents to take one year deals for a chance to play with Shaq and attempt to get in on a ring.

If the Heat absolutely have to make this trade they should give up Odom, Grant and the 1st round pick instead of Butler. Trading away Caron as well is giving up too much, and a Shaq-led Miami will certainly go pretty far in the playoffs so it's not like that pick will be very high anyway.

Shaq and Kobe Bryant couldn't get by Detroit. I don't see any reason why Shaq and Wade could.

Miami has 3 scoring options now and one of them is Eddie Jones who despite being consistent, manages to score the most unimportant 18 points every game.

Good trade for the Lakers IMO. Miami just blew off their entire leg is all. I just don't think any real movement was made by them, they were already better than most of the East but not better than the top 2 or 3 teams. They're still in that same position with even less upside now though.

Great trade for the Lakers though.

The Los Angeles Times, citing team and league sources, reported on its Web site Saturday night that the Lakers have in agreed in principle to trade O'Neal to the Heat for Lamar Odom, Caron Butler, Brian Grant and a first-round pick.

I like how its gone from "...Caron Butler or a first round pick" to "...Caron Butler and a first round pick".

Miami is stupid. It wasnt that bad of a trade when it was the former, but with the later they are giving up too much to rent Shaq for 2 years.

The Lakers are going to luck out because they want to get rid of Shaq by the 14th to increase their chances of keeping Kobe. The Heat could have probably gotten the deal done without trading Butler.

You got your starting spot, didn't you Al.

At least you won't need to worry about choking in the playoffs again this year.
