Scroby 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2004 Eugene Character Stolen From Comedy Star; Details Inside Story By: Niel Stephens June 17, 2004 The following was a press release sent to and taken directly from PWTorch.com: "I have some interesting facts that you might be interested in. My name is Alex Lourido and for the last ten years my partner, David Francella, and I have been creating a show called, "The Psychotic Neurotics Comedy Show," which is shot and produced in Philadelphia. Our most popular character on the show is Eugene, the mentally challenged actor who is played by me! The similarities between our Eugene and Nick Dinsmore's Eugene, are daunting, and it even gets better. Back in December, Dave and I spoke with Todd Resnick, an Executive Producer from Spike TV, and pitched our show to him. He was interested in learning more so we sent him a show that showcased Eugene as our strongest character! (Do you see where we're going with this!) Mr. Resnick then contacts us personally, and via mail, to tell us that they have decided not to run with "it," but they really liked our ideas and we have an open door policy with them to pitch further show concepts! Shortly after this, I'm talking maybe a month or so later, Nick Dinsmore reveals his Eugene character on Spike's "Raw," one of the highest-rated shows on cable TV! We have spoken to our attorney and he is in the process of developing a case. This is a huge story, and when people see our Eugene Character that was developed 10 years ago, and is still very popular on our show, they will immediately reach the conclusion that Nick Dinsmore stole the character. As a matter of fact, the entire story line that "Raw" is developing with the Eugene Character has been stolen from one of our shows. Dave and I can tell you exactly where their story line is going and what is going to happen, because they didn't even have the decency to change it a little!" edotherocket 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 Look I'm sure if the WWE just explain that he is based on a retarded kid who the wrestlers used to make fun of backstage, everyone will realise the whole thing was a big misunderstanding.
Guest JMA Report post Posted June 18, 2004 I'm still waiting for Bischoff to reveal that Eugene is his son (the result of an incestuous union with his sister). Smell the ratings!

Right. That will make everything much better. I can see it all now: Road Agent: "Hey Bradshaw, you don't have to worry about your incident in Germany any more." Bradshaw: "Really? Why?" Road Agent: "Because Vince is going to release a statement saying the 'Eugene' character is based on a retard who used to come to some of our shows back in the 80's." Bradshaw: "Why in the hell would he do that?" Road Agent: "Because two no-name hacks from Phillie are suing us over the 'Eugene' character, and you know Vince will never admit to stealiing an idea. He changed the entire company name so he wouldn't have to deal with those stupid 'panda people' any more."
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted June 18, 2004 Spike didn't come up with the character. Dinsmore did.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted June 18, 2004 So these two jackasses had a character that was a wrestling idolizing retard who was the nephew of a wrestling promoter whose favorite wrestler was Triple H? I believe them.

Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Report post Posted June 18, 2004 I have to confess.... I came up with the original Goldust gimmick. The creepy movie freak who turned gay and had a fetish for black men. (sticks out wrists to be cuffed)
TheBigSwigg 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 That's two gimmicks they've stolen....
Open the Muggy Gate 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 I originally came up with the the nickname "The One". I never thought the WWE would ever put steal it, let alone put it on someone who sucked though....
Guest wrestlingbs Report post Posted June 18, 2004 I came up with the Katie Vick storyline. Now I'm a producer for ABC. Offhand, I'd say it's bullplop. They may be right, but then Nick Dinsmore would have to hang out with Spike TV execs, overheard it, and knowing that he could get sued completely changed the act as a mentally-challenged guy who loves wrestling. And I find all these assumptions hard to swallow.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 WWE also ripped off one of my ideas, many years ago, when I was overheard at an autograph signing. Sure, I think "Lost Burritos" sounded better, but I guess they figured they'd be covering their tracks, so to speak.

Guest JacK Report post Posted June 18, 2004 Wow they only have one attorney. They must be nuts. Don't large businesses usually have swarms after swarms of lawyers and other legal types waiting to be called up? And with the recent spate of lawsuits WWE's been involved in I'm sure they're on quite good terms with they're lawyers. To win a case like this, they'd either need pretty damn expensive lawyers, which these two don't sound like they can afford, or irrefutable evidence that the idea was stolen from them. It'd be gold if they got Nick Dinsmore to kayfabe the courtroom though, and be lead to the box by Regal. That'd be hilarious. Hi-larious. We should ask them if he's going to beat HHH on monday. They seem to think they know. I wouldda thought the direction it's going would be kind of obvious, with an eventual 'I'm not retarded at all' heel turn type of thing. Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Report post Posted June 18, 2004 Attorney: I call Eugene up to the stand to testify. Eugene: Hulk Hogan testified against Vince McMahon in 1994... (moments later) Vince: Hogan, you're fired! Hogan: You can't fire me brother! Vince: Good point. But you're releived of your duites again until September 2005
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 I still find this gimmick awful and want to see it burn to it's end quick. Any fan who sees the WWE portraying a grown long-time wrestling fan as a mentally-challenged individual and does not see the insulting reflection the company is making upon us is blind. I don't think the fact that he's retarded and a lifelong fan are mutually exclusive.
King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2004 I don't think the fact that he's retarded and a lifelong fan are mutually exclusive. Well, I do agree with you. But to be honest, if that sort of thing bothered me then there have been plenty of pre-Eugene instances that would have made me turn off. To be honest, wrestling isn't something I take totally seriously anyway, so Vinnie Mac trying to insult me or my intelligence doesn't really come into my mind when watching a show. I do see your point though. I don't see the cause for claim in this lawsuit though. I mean, come on. 'Retard' characters, for the want of a better word, aren't exactly exclusive to one show now, are they. And if you've got a retarded character in an entertainment show, Eugene is one of the names that instantly spring to mind to most people. Eugene the retard...not exactly original, but it's not the sort of idea you'd need to steal off someone.
