When it was suggested the racial climate has changed in Boston, Bonds demurred.

They built a tunnel to honor Ted Williams in Boston. What did he imagine would be built for him?

 

"Nothing, man," he said. "I'm black. They don't build stuff for blacks."

People were still racist all over the place in the times when Bobby Bonds played. You know if a guy like Robert Parrish, Paul Pierce, Antwoine Walker, Jim Rice, etc walks down the street they get mobbed and worshipped.

 

I hate to tell Barry this...but, and I could be wrong...I bet that there are still a few white people living in San Francisco that hate blacks.

Supposedly after some spring training game when he was being hounded with questions about steroids he walked off yelling "Black power!" And we all know how he wants to pass Babe Ruth because he's the old white guy, but not Hank Aaron. Then there was the time he charged the mound to yell at a pitcher who will likely be remembered long past Bonds, never taking off his helmet, his obscene padding, or even dropping his bat. And I think we're all pretty sure he uses steroids.

 

All of this will always be excused because he's a great player.

As I remember it, the fans of Boston always went the hardest on the ignorant athletes like Bonds.

 

His dad was treated badly? Wasn't that however-many years ago when he was a visiting player?

 

What about Robert Parrish, Paul Pierce, Jim Rice, Anson Carter, and upto his embarrassing night, Mo Vaughn? Almost all of them were idolized for their contributions to the team that they play for. Maybe Bobby Bonds had a hard time in Boston, but Boston is a hard sports city, especially on visiting players.

Like Dan Patrick said, Bonds making a judgment based on the beliefs of others, is the same as everybody saying he is on steroids, but we don't know for sure you just hear it from ex-teammates.

 

I will agree with sports writers being just as hypocritical as Bonds.

You know, the Red Sox used to be a rather racist organization (they were the last to have a black player, if memory serves) but they're not anymore. And Boston was, at one time, a pretty racist city ... but again, not anymore (e.g. Pedro, Manny, & Ortiz being among the 3 most popular Sox). At this point, I wouldn't accuse the team or the city as being any worse as the Giants and SF are.

 

And it's laughable that Bonds would say that just because something was a certain way when his father played, it's the same way now. Hey, Barry, things have changed a bit in the last 30 years ... startling, isn't it?!?

Ironically, Kirby Puckett was close to signing with the Red Sox when he became a FA but Minnesota made the better offer(Read it in Shut Out: A story of Race and Baseball in Boston. Really a neat read detailing the racist history of the Red Sox and how it played out in Boston as a city).

The whole "Boston is a racist city" argument is so passe, it's not even funny. Having lived in other cities besides Boston, I can assure you that Boston is no more racist than anywhere else. Maybe it was 30, or even 20, years ago, but the rest of the country has caught up just fine.

Tom Yawkey was a detestable man who took a pass on Jackie f'n Robinson and infected the entire Sox organization with istitutional racism from the minute he took over until he (thankfully) croaked.
