Bored Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds.../blasting_zone/ "Boston is too racist for me,'' he said. "I couldn't play there.'' It is a judgment, he acknowledges, not derived of firsthand experience -- he missed the 1999 All-Star Game, played in Boston, because of an injury -- but on word-of-mouth. "Only what guys have said," he said, "but that's been going on ever since my dad [bobby] was playing baseball. I can't play like that. That's not for me, brother." When it was suggested the racial climate has changed in Boston, Bonds demurred. "It ain't changing," he said. "It ain't changing nowhere." They built a tunnel to honor Ted Williams in Boston. What did he imagine would be built for him? "Nothing, man," he said. "I'm black. They don't build stuff for blacks."
starvenger Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 And you wonder why people don't like him...
Guest Dynamite Kido Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 This coming from a man who used to be married to a white women.......
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 So his father was treated badly, and he's bitter. It's no worse than some of the ignorant opinions some on this board hold. Its not like he came out and shouted them. A reporter asked him a question, and he answered. Big deal.
Brett Favre Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 Where's the Mo Vaughn tunnel, huh, somebody tell me!
Guest FrigidSoul Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 The Mo Vaughn Tunnel leads to CenterFolds 2000 in Rhode Island. Al, how can you constantly defend this man? You know what he just said was ignorant. I mean, as somebody who lives about an hour and change west of Boston and goes there frequently I'm pretty offended. People were still racist all over the place in the times when Bobby Bonds played. You know if a guy like Robert Parrish, Paul Pierce, Antwoine Walker, Jim Rice, etc walks down the street they get mobbed and worshipped. I hate to tell Barry this...but, and I could be wrong...I bet that there are still a few white people living in San Francisco that hate blacks.

Its not like he came out and shouted them. A reporter asked him a question, and he answered. Big deal. Athletes can't have opinions that bend too far one way like "regular" folk do. It's hypocritical. It's why I can't stand most sports writers. They admire athletes while treating them like retarded kids who don't know what they're doing half the time. They know, they just don't care.
Fuzzy Dunlop Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 There's racist people everywhere, but this isn't even the first racist thing Bonds has said. Supposedly after some spring training game when he was being hounded with questions about steroids he walked off yelling "Black power!" And we all know how he wants to pass Babe Ruth because he's the old white guy, but not Hank Aaron. Then there was the time he charged the mound to yell at a pitcher who will likely be remembered long past Bonds, never taking off his helmet, his obscene padding, or even dropping his bat. And I think we're all pretty sure he uses steroids. All of this will always be excused because he's a great player.
the max Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 As I remember it, the fans of Boston always went the hardest on the ignorant athletes like Bonds. His dad was treated badly? Wasn't that however-many years ago when he was a visiting player? What about Robert Parrish, Paul Pierce, Jim Rice, Anson Carter, and upto his embarrassing night, Mo Vaughn? Almost all of them were idolized for their contributions to the team that they play for. Maybe Bobby Bonds had a hard time in Boston, but Boston is a hard sports city, especially on visiting players.
Gert T Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 Like Dan Patrick said, Bonds making a judgment based on the beliefs of others, is the same as everybody saying he is on steroids, but we don't know for sure you just hear it from ex-teammates. I will agree with sports writers being just as hypocritical as Bonds.
nl5xsk1 Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 You know, the Red Sox used to be a rather racist organization (they were the last to have a black player, if memory serves) but they're not anymore. And Boston was, at one time, a pretty racist city ... but again, not anymore (e.g. Pedro, Manny, & Ortiz being among the 3 most popular Sox). At this point, I wouldn't accuse the team or the city as being any worse as the Giants and SF are. And it's laughable that Bonds would say that just because something was a certain way when his father played, it's the same way now. Hey, Barry, things have changed a bit in the last 30 years ... startling, isn't it?!?
The Ghost of bps21 Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 I'm sorry, but this isn't just Bonds. That Curse of the Bambino documentary pointed out that many black ball players still regard the Red Sox that way. That's why they didn't sign a black free agent for a ridiculously long amount of time. In Black baseball culture...the Red Sox are bad.

And my personal favorite, babbling like a jack ass about how his mail criticizing him for steroid abuse is just like Hank Aaron getting hate mail for being a black man chasing a white man's record.

HarleyQuinn Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 Ironically, Kirby Puckett was close to signing with the Red Sox when he became a FA but Minnesota made the better offer(Read it in Shut Out: A story of Race and Baseball in Boston. Really a neat read detailing the racist history of the Red Sox and how it played out in Boston as a city).

kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 I wouldn't sign any black ballplayers in Boston -- it could get cold at Fenway in Sept.-Oct...

Having lived in other cities besides Boston, I can assure you that Boston is no more racist than anywhere else. Maybe it was 30, or even 20, years ago, but the rest of the country has caught up just fine.
geniusMoment Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 When Dan Wilkenson left the Bengals he said he would never play in Cincy again, that it was the most racist town in america, he said it because the press reported how he punched his pregnant wife in the stomach. Its nice to see we have moved down to number two.
Guest Anglesault Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 We don't get enough "New York is a racist town" anymore. I think John Rocker changed that. Not that it ever really made all that much sense.
Guest DubWiser Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 Tom Yawkey was a detestable man who took a pass on Jackie f'n Robinson and infected the entire Sox organization with istitutional racism from the minute he took over until he (thankfully) croaked. Also, Boston did have it's share of serious racial problems right up until the eighties, but... None of that changes the fact that Bonds is a weenie whose mouth works independantly from his giant, pumpkin sized misshapen head 99% of the time. I so hope he gets drilled this weekend.

Its nice to see we have moved down to number two. Uh, you are number three. When fans booed Barry Bonds but cheered Andy Van Slyke back in the early- to mid-90s, we were the MOST RACIST CITY IN AMERICA. Of course, this is the same city that cheered a black crackhead QB over Terry Bradshaw after the Steelers won two Super Bowls, but that doesn't count...
nl5xsk1 Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 Dub, what was NYC, Chicago, Denver, LA, SF, etc. doing while Boston was having all these "racial problems" in the 80s? Singing campfire songs and holding hands? No, they experienced the same types of problems as Boston.

nl5xsk1 Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 Would it be a roid-rage that caused Bonds to commit homicide in front of a stadium full of people?
Guest Anglesault Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 Would it be a roid-rage that caused Bonds to commit homicide in front of a stadium full of people? It would be the racist white man's fault.

How many of those players have been to Fenway recently and seen how the fans treat guys like David Ortiz, Pokey Reese, and even Manny this year? Or are they just bitter individuals that can't leave things in the past? If anything, the white guys are the ones getting the most heat this year (Nomar as the big example). Fuck Bonds and his ignorant, pussyish attitude. If he would just shut up and hit home runs (but not stand in the batter's box and admire them every time), MAYBE people would like him more.
