NEW YORK (AP) -- Rapper and actor DMX was arrested on charges that he and another man tried to steal a car in a parking lot at Kennedy Airport, authorities said.

DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, and Jackie Hudgins were arrested Thursday night after Port Authority police interrupted a dispute between the two and another man whose car they allegedly tried to steal, authorities said.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Simmons, 34, may have identified himself as a federal agent, according to Tony Ciavolella, a Port Authority spokesman.

No one was hurt and no weapons were recovered, Ciavolella said.

Simmons and Hudgins were arrested on charges of attempted robbery, criminal impersonation and criminal mischief, he said. They were in custody and were expected to be taken to central booking in Queens late Thursday.

A message left for the company representing Simmons was not immediately returned Thursday night.

Simmons is the first artist to have his first five albums debut on the "Billboard" charts at No. 1.

The rapper was fined and ordered to make public service announcements for the Humane Society after police found pipes for smoking crack, a pistol and 13 pit bulls at his home in Teaneck, New Jersey, in 1999.

Simmons pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia in that case.

DMX has acted in films including "Romeo Must Die," "Exit Wounds" and "Cradle 2 The Grave."

You think a male rapper will ever think twice about every artist in his genre continuing to be stereotyped that way if he gets busted on it?

But yeah, you wouldn't want to fuck with someone named Earl.

Yeah, I'm sure he's concerned for the welfare of his Hoppity Hip Brethren. Loses sleep at night even.

DMX is a former (NOT ANYMORE LOL2004!!@!) crack cocaine addict. He's always been upfront about it. Even in his rap beef with Ja Rule, Ja called him "Crack Man X."

Heh, wasn't he retiring to become a priest? Guess that didn't work out so well.

Minister rather. DMX isn't a member of the African Catholic Church.

Just once, I want to see a rapper get arrested for white-collar crime, like embezzlement or something.

His name is Suge Knight. Oh wait, he doesn't rap. Well he's fat. And they both are words of three letters with an "A" in the middle.

DMX was diagnosed as being bi-polar, along with half the teenagers in america today.

Much like ADHD, it's a knee jerk reaction to some extreme, but not neccesarily abnormal behavior. Being overly cynical and lightning to quick to anger aren't really sociopathic when it's required for your survival. Such is the case in Yonkers.

just once, i'd like to see someone from a rockband get arrested for stupid behavior. but it'll never happen. the police "profile" rappers.

if dave grohl tried to steal a car, no one would notice. he'd be on his way home to pen the next hot song for the o.c.

Ever hear of a decade called the 1970s? Cause I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't. You see rock stars got arrested all the time back then.

Wait ... are you saying that the police would let any white guy get away with stealing a car, or just famous white guys? Because I wouldn't mind picking up a new ride each morning to drive to work. Why bother paying gas & whatnot if I can just steal a new car each morning?

they have a section of the police in miami were they profile JUST rappers. isn't that wrong?

i know that there was plenty of rock star debauchary going on in the 70's. but that was a different time then. anyone could smoke pot on the street and cops wouldn't trip. these guys would trash their hotel rooms, have groupies overdosing, and not get busted

but let's fast foward to the 2000's. do the have a police divison watching rock stars? do they have a division to round up pop stars and 20 something actors when they fuck up?

But Dave Grohl wouldn't be so stupid as to be trying to steal a car when he has plenty of money at his disposal...

My presumption is that the rappers caused enough problems to warrant a task force ... police normally don't assign cops to watch a group that they don't anticipate problems from. The disease precedes the cure.

And try telling Andy Dick, Robert Downey, etc. that white guys don't get busted when they break the law.

You know, with this talk of white celebrities not getting picked on, how else do you explain what happened to poor Pee-Wee Herman?

He got a raw deal. Busted for jerkin' off.

Very disappointing to hear. DMX is one of my favorite rappers to come out in the last 6 years. He needs to cut out the knuckleheadedness and kick the drug bit. I know he's been trying, but he may need to go to a facility this time.

Speaking of Ja Rule cracking on Crackman X, at least he hasn't been taking ecstasy and having relations with a male clothes designer.

As you can tell, I hate Ja Rule.
