Graphic Novels

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering which ones do you own and which ones are considered the best. Espically as far as Indy comics goes, since I plan to start collecting them very soon. Ivs just started collection Manga too as you might be able to tell. As far as the ones I own I have the following:

30 Days Of Night

Bartman: Best of The Best

Battle Royal Vol. 1

Essential Daredevil Vol. 1

One Peice Vol. 1

Paperback Marvels- The Amazing Spider-Man: Murder By Spider

Shaman King Vol. 1

Shaman King Vol. 2

Superman: The Death Of Superman

Superman: Bizarros World

Which ones do you advice I pick up. I would just get the comics but with no comic store around for 3 hours its just much easier to order The Trade paper backs or Graphic Novels.

Pretty much everyone will recommend the following:

Watchmen

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

Sandman (a 10-part series, but seriously worth it)

Those three tend to be the most common "greatest of all time" picks.

Yeah I have read Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, and for better or worse The Dark Dark Knight Strikes Back. I like them all, the first two quite a but more for obvious reasons.

Pretty much anything Alan Moore has ever written is worth buying. Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, and to a lesser extent Garth Ennis are consistently good too.

BATMAN: STRANGE APPIRITIONS (sp?)

Collects Steve Englehart and Len Wein's work on Detective Comics in 1978. One of the very best TPB's I own.

THE ESSENTIAL AVENGERS VOLUME III

The single strongest collection Marvel has put out to date. Not a single clunker.

Preacher: All the TPB's.

Sandman: Everything except the Death ones, Haven't found them when I had money.

Batman Vs. Predator: Dream Match as a kid.

Usagi Yojimbo: Every damn thing I can get. Get it, it rocks.

Akira TPB's: To see if it lived up to the hype. It didn't.

Bone: Haven't heard much about Bone in a while, but then again, I'm kind of out of the scene for a while. Was pretty good.

Watchmen: We all know it owns.

Stardust(?): Neil Gaiman, forgot the title but was a nice read, the size of the book makes it rather hard to fit on my shelf.

Spawn: Why did I buy them again?

Ok, here's what you want:

Lost Girls by Alan Moore. Alice of the Lewis Carroll stories, Wendy from Peter Pan and Dorothy of Oz in a lesbian relationship. The concept is seeing exactly how high class and dignified you can make porn, and where the line to erotica is drawn. Actually, I don't even think it's finished, and it seems to be rather expensive and rare, but man, talk about a crown jewel for your collection.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds by Hayao Miyazaki is a classic. I think they're releasing an unflopped version, so look for that, if not, get the perfect collection editioins. Also, Azumanga Daioh by Kiyohiko Azuma is very good(the first volume's translation in shaky, but about halfway through a better translated took over and everything is right with the world, with Yukai teaching English, not Spanish and all) and Excel Saga by Koshi Rikdo is also very good. Oh, and Dragonball(not necessarily DBZ, which came afterward) and Sandland are both nice Akira Toriyama works. Sandland comes in one volume, it's a short manga. You might also like GTO aka Great Teacher Onizuka. I'm not sure who wrote it though.

I've never even heard of this before. But it sounds... well... really fucking cool. Where could I pick one up?

I have over 80 TPBs in my collection, from very old to brand new. I'll try and post them later. Besides all the above recommended, no collection should go without MARVELS. Either the Hardcover edition or the regular one. Definitely my favorite TPB ever.

Well, to the best of my knowledge it's like this: The first isn't too hard to come by and you should be able to get it through the usual channels. It's rather on the short side and is serves more to whet the appetite, really. The second one is out of print and seems rather hard to get your hands on and fairly pricey if you do. I really wouldn't know where you'd find that. ebay maybe. I looked there and didn't find it, but I didn't look too hard. After that there was some sort of conflict with his publishers or something and he never did any more. Last I heard, he was going to finish it eventually, but you know how those kinds of statements are.

Daredevil Visionaries Volumes I-III: The complete original Frank Miller run on Daredevil. Need I say more?

Daredevil/Elektra: Love and War, Hardcover addition: Collects the Love and War GN as well as Elektra: Assasin in that awesome oversiezed format that Marvel loves to death. Very good.

There is also an exclusive (I forget whre) hardcover of the first 40 issues of Ultimate Spider-Man for $40, which is not bad considering its almost 1,000 pages.

MrZsasz: Hopefully Eastern isnt a dirty word for you either, there is some awesome Manga out there if you know what your looking for. I think its just as good as anything you can get from North America, if you havent picked any up then you should.

Masked Man of Mystery: The Oppisite goes to you if you only read Manga, Check out the good old fasioned North American Super Hero scene if you havent. :P

Now that Ive said that, Im really looking for some good Independant comics at the moment, and have a few questions that I can hopefully get answered.

#1, Has anyone read Daniel Clowes, Ghost World? I saw the movie and had to buy it the next day, is the book just as good, better or worse?

#2, Wizard Edge said that Alex Robinsons, Box Office Poison was the best Indy graphic novel out there, can anyone tell me anything about that one?

& #3, Now that Dave Sims, Cerebus is over, would anyone recommend to someone how hasnt read a single issue of it to buy the Trade paperbacks?

I've liked what little has looked interesting to me (Astro Boy, Akira, Lone Wolf and Cub), but the vast majority seems to be stagnant and insanely overpriced. I think a lot of the appeal for manga was hurt when Vertigo started up, and could do the mature themes that used to be exclusive to Manga, but with the storytelling skills of guys like Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman who are better then just about anybody else in the world.

The book is very different. While the movie actually had a plot, the novel just kinda meanders through a wide series of events, and it's also mean-spirited as hell (specifically thinking of the panel showing the girl with the tumor). But if you loved the movie that much, I'd at least flip through it at the local bookstore.

Here's one I don't see mentioned often. JLA/JSA: Virtue and Vice. It's a kickass superhero story and the art fits it perfectly. V&V turned me into a Johns fanboy....

Be pretty well versed in classic literature if you want to read Leauge of Extraordinary Gentlemen. There's references in there that put me to shame. I'm sure it's fun either way, but I can't think of another comic so thickly encrusted with influence.

Pick up the hardcover of the first story arc of Superman/Batman by Loeb and Mcguiness. Fun story and a cheap hardcover to make your shelf look fuller.

Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis, Adolph & Buddha by Osamu Tezuka, and Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai are definately some of by favorite series. V for Vendetta by Alan Moore, Creature Tech by Doug Tenapel, The Crow by J. O'Barr, Pedro & Me by Judd Winnick, and Gutwallow by Dan Berger are great single trades. I haven't gotten to finish Teenager from Mars or Fade from Blue but they were awesome.

It seems you're using an oxymoron here. "Cheap" and "hardcover" don't really seem to go hand in hand. Is it really that cheap, since it collects about 6-7 issues only? If it is then I might consider picking it up, even if I usually stay away from all Superman stuff.

I over 200+ trades, I get about four a week depending on work and that.

The best the nobody else has mentioned:

Sleeper (the two books were excellent, good first season)

Fables and Powers (read well in a trade format, good writing and art for both)

Iron Wok Jan (incredible book, just keeps you wanting more and more)

Carl Banks Uncle Scrooge Library are also worth the read.

I've heard alot about V for Vendetta, but what is it about?

About an artistic, theatrical vigilante fighting an oppresive government, in a nutshell. Very good, though it requires some knowledge of British history and politics.
