Man, EVERYONE I've talked to (Sens fans and non-Sens fans) think Hasek is a bad idea. I'm not going to say, anything, though, since the Leafs gave a goalie who can't play a whole season at least 2 years.

Really, I'm hoping for the first half to be wiped out by a lock-out so that the Leafs won't get worn down by a whole season. Their big streak came at about the halfway mark, it could happen again.

Pittsburgh might not be so bad in a few years. They found a diamond in the rough last year with Ryan Malone (an almost ROY candidate) and a stellar finish. They drafted a big, strong defenseman with the #5 pick in 2002, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury last year with the first pick, and Evgeni Malkin this year with the second pick; those three should be a solid core of players to build a team around in the near future. If the owners get a favorable CBA, it's very possible that they could contend in a few years (provided Malkin continues to improve and puts a few pounds on his skinny ass frame).

The slots referendum getting passed could have put together the final pieces of the puzzle for this team's revival (and, ironically, survival). This was a team that is three years removed from the Eastern Conference Finals; it has a young and fairly innovative coach in Eddie Olczyk, and a saavy GM in Craig Patrick who had put together a consistently impressive run of playoff appearances in the 90's before the team ran into financial trouble.

They'll be alright, provided they get their arena and the prospects pan out as they should.

What do you think the Penguins chances are of signing either Mark Recchi or Alexei Kovalev, and which one would you prefer?

Posted

Yeah, Pittsburgh's not actually all that bad of a team if they can get their future talent they have built up. Definitely have a good set of rookies coming into the system.

Kovalev might sign with Pittsburgh considering he was already there once before. As for Recchi, no clue.

I'd also just like to point out that if Pittsburgh bombs again this coming season (which most likely will happen), I believe that they've got a good shot at also picking up Crosby (as he's available next draft). Don't know if Crosby will be as good as everyone makes him out to be, but he'd be another player that the Penguins could get to build up a good team.

I doubt Pittsburgh will make any big aquisitions if there is no miracle where the Players Union accepts an owner-friendly CBA. They probably want to keep costs down until there is some semblance of profit sharing.

That being said, Kovalev and Recchi both loved it in the 'Burgh during their stints, and if they'd take a pay cut, it wouldn't shock me to see either of them in black and gold. I can just imagine a line with Lemieux, Kovalev, and Malkin... *salivates*

Malkin in the center, Lemieux and Kovalev on the wings. Jesus, that line would score. If Malkin is ready, anyways.

Thats bullshit. Belfour consistanly plays 60-63 games each year, check his stats. He played 59 last year and that was with a couple of injuries. That is still a typical Belfour year in regards to games played. Toronto just tried to use him as a workhorse and he had back problems. He was on pace for about 69 games before injuries and that is just a stupid thing to do or expect.

Hell, Belfour played 59 games and was just 4 wins under league leader Brodeur who played 75 games.

Here is the last few years in regards to Eddie's games played:

Year -- GP

97-98 - 61

98-99 - 61

99-00 - 62

00-01 - 63

01-02 - 60

02-03 - 62

03-04 - 59

So how exactly can't he play a full season when he has been consistantly playing full seasons as a number one goalie?

Belfour with the Leafs and Hasek with the Senators is exactly the same situation. Anyone who considers the Leafs a contender is laughable...BUT, many are saying Hasek would be the final piece of the puzzle for the Sens. Now they just need to get tougher. Trading Alfredsson away for a few more tough role players with upside would make them the champions.

Keep in mind also, every few years Belfour has a terrible season. i'd say he's due, plus with the Leaf's not getting any younger or talented on the blue line - he'll have a lot more work than usual. He'll burn out, not unlike in the playoffs.

A few more points:

Are the Kings even going to have a team this year? They lost their best defenseman, in addition to possibly losing their three star players (Allison, Deadmarsh, and Ziggy). I know the first two have been no a shelf for a long time so I wouldn't re-up their contracts either, but when/if they do become healthy, I'm sure the Kings would love to have them back.

And why are so many people wanting Kariya? He's going to ask for max. price based on past reputation. Injuries have slowed him down considerably, I'd pass on the guy altogether.

They traded Radek Bonk for Stephane Quintal and signed him. He's a good defenseman. Pairing him with Nathan Dempsey would work wonders for the Kings, IMO. Aaron Miller, Mattias Norstrom and Lubomir Visnovsky round out a solid corps defensively.

Signing someone like Pavol Demitra would greatly help them offensively, and maybe if they resigned one of their big three (I'd stick with Palffy).

That would be an absolutely ridiculous thing to do. Yeah, trade the team captain, and one of their top scorers, for some 3rd and 4th line muckers. :bonk:

Yep. Plus, I believe Recchi's family still lives in Pittsburgh. Someone might want to confirm that, though.

Yes, he is married to a Pittsburgh native and Recchi himself still resides in Pittsburgh.

Regarding Zhamnov, while there is talk amongst die-hard fans about signing him, I doubt it would happen. His price will almost certainly be to high and, in the political battle for a new arena, Kovalev and Recchi are more appealing players because the politicians and casual fans would know who they are. Signing Zhamnov wouldn't mean as much to these people because he is not a familar name.

Is Mario gonna attempt another year? I hope he does, I really like the guy and respect the hell out of him.

Yes, he plans on playing for the Penguins this year, even if there is a work stoppage.

He is also going to play for Canada in the upcoming World Cup of Hockey

Thornton wants out of Boston?!?

http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/bruins...odonnells_gone/

Ok, so the Bruins lost Knuble - he was only one part of the top line, and could be replaceable with Samsonov or Bergeron or Nylander. And they lost SOD - they were pretty deep at D anyways, and should be able to plug in a younger, faster player in his place. And it seems like Murray is going, most likely to Detroit - now we're talking about replacing 2/3 of the top line, and a guy that's averaging over 35 goals a year for the past 3 seasons. But if this is true, and Thornton wants out of town, I'm officially done with this team. I put up with trading Bourque. I put up with repeated first round playoff losses. I put up with the Steve Kaspar era, Jacobs' stinginess and Sinden's ineptitude. But don't go and lose the franchise player, a player that's often mentioned as part of the next wave of young superstars. I swear, no lie and no exaggeration, if Thornton goes I'm officially done with the Bruins. I'll find another team to root for, and the fucking local team will never get a penny from me again.

HUGE

I was really hoping that Quenneville would be signed by Ottawa. :(

Weird is what it is. Why would they make this move now, and not either

a) when the firing rumours were swirling around Granato at the trade deadline, or

b) right after the club got bounced out of the playoffs?

And why the hell is Granato staying on as an assistant? This makes no sense.

Oh, and Craig Conroy signed with the Kings. 4 years, $12 mil and a no-trade clause.

Posted

My question is, what did Granato do wrong last season? He seemed to get the most out of that team considering all the injuries they had. Maybe some Avs fans can correct me on this.

Posted

The only thing that Granato did wrong was lose in the playoffs. Even with the injuries that they had during the season, the Avs were deep enough talent-wise that a coach should have been able to take them deeper in the post-season. It evidently was a scenario where the ownership & Lacroix thought that a coach should have been a difference maker and beaten SJ in the playoffs.

Personally, I think hiring him in the first place was a bad idea; to go from Crawford & Hartley to Granato is a major step down in coaching level.

Posted

They've lacked the killer instinct they had when Hartley and Crawford were in charge.

Granato seems more like a "players' coach" than a guy who will call out his players when he needs to.

Points taken but I think he still deserved another season. Plus, havent Quenneville's Blues teams been criticized for that exact same reason.
