Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 With deadline about 10 day away. What are some needs of teams looking to make a deal. Also it might be fun for people to come up with trade ideas. No Randy Johnson for some utility player in Triple AAA. For the Twins. Starting pitching seems to be first on their list. Names like Kris Benson, Steve Sparks, Mike Maroth, and Shawn Estes have been mentioned. One name previously mentioned was Miquel Batista. But, PG says Toronto's keeping him. The same goes for Jamie Moyer at this point. The good news is. These guys are all inexpensive, and it wouldn't cost much to acquire them. The bad news is none of them are guaranteed to help the ball club.

Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Ron Villone could be an effective 5th starter for the Twins. I watched him on Monday face the Red Sox and he held them to one run over 6(I believe). I've always thought he's been an under utilised pitcher. Teams want to throw him in the bullpen when he has good enough stuff to be in a starting rotation. Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 From Foxsports.. http://msn.foxsports.com/story/2592218 In early talks concerning a possible Randy Johnson trade, the Arizona Diamondbacks have said they want major-league talent — such as catcher Jorge Posada — in return from the New York Yankees, according to the Newark Star- Ledger. In the report, an unnamed baseball official familiar with the situation says the Diamondbacks have asked the Yankees whether Posada would be available in a possible deal for the left-handed ace. The Yankees reportedly weren't thrilled with the idea of including Posada in a possible trade. Interestingly, the Yankees' lack of quality minor-league prospects has been a major conversation topic in New York. Radio talk-show hosts, among others, have wondered aloud about whom the Bombers could deal for Johnson while keeping the current major-league team together. However, with starting pitchers Kevin Brown and Mike Mussina on the disabled list, the Yankees are aggressively pursuing a quality starting pitcher. So don't rule out the possibility of New York landing Ramon Ortiz from Anaheim, then promptly shipping him to Arizona in a possible three-way deal for Johnson. But the Ledger points out Posada's contract could make him eligible for a trade. Why? As one of three Yankees without a no-trade clause in his contract, Posada can opt out of his contract after this season. Posada is earning $9 million this season, and if he stays he will make $12 million next year, $13.5 million in 2006 with a team option for 2007 or a buyout of $4 million. I'm not sure how anyone feels about this silly rumor.
C Dubya 04 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 I might go on a tri-state terror spree if Ed "no trade" Wade doesn't make a real trade soon. (and by that I mean getting someone better than Mike Williams at the deadline) The Phillies need a centerfielder and a starting pitcher to have a chance. Jason Micheals is lucky if he doesn't embarrass himself out in the field and the same thing with Glanville at the plate. Also, the Phillies could use some bullpen help. I throw up in my mouth every time that Roberto Horrendous comes in.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted July 21, 2004 From Foxsports.. (Posada for Johnson) I'm not sure how anyone feels about this silly rumor. I was talking on AIM with alkeiper about that earlier. We both find it and funny and full of shit. I think its even funnier because its obviously Colangelo just screwing with Steinbrenner. I don't think Johnson leaves the desert to be honest. Jason Micheals is lucky if he doesn't embarrass himself out in the field and the same thing with Glanville at the plate. I'm happy with a Michaels/Ledee platoon, but I wouldn't mind picking up Steve Finley. As for the pitching, I really wish the Phillies would give Ryan Madson another shot. lso, the Phillies could use some bullpen help. I throw up in my mouth every time that Roberto Horrendous comes in. Bowa needs to use the bullpen better. Here's the depth chart as I see it: Billy Wagner Ryan Madson Tim Worrell Rheal Cormier Geoff Geary Roberto Hernandez I think Geary's a quality reliever, and Bowa should go to him more. Also consider bringing up Josh Hancock for the 'pen.
Bored 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 A's are probably looking for a second baseman as the Scutaro/McLemore platoon isn't exactly lighting the world on fire. They'll probably look for a bat period as Scott Hatteberg has come down to earth these past few weeks and not much surprise that Eric Byrnes is cooling off as well just like he did last year. Middle relief could always use a boost. Also look for the A's to try to dump Arthur Rhodes and Eric Karros on someone that has lost their mind.

I think with Byrnes, Macha has to make a decision, either he is going to be an everyday player starting now and forever (until he is no longer with the A's) or he is going to be a PERMANENT utility man. He interviews at least once a week here on a local Sacramento affiliate, and you can totally see how his confidence is shot, after he is benched after an 0-4 day, and then ot let back in the lineup for a week. I understand how the matchups work with the leftys vs righties, however Kielty sucks from the left side so it is kind of mind boggling to see Byrnes get benched so Kielty can get a "favorable"( ) matchup. Guest GreatOne Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Yeah I'm really rushing to trade away a top prosepct for JOSE MESA. Believe me, the Timlin/Spoljaric and Slocumb deals will go on Woody Woodward's hedgestone (of course nevermind most up here wanted to trade for ANY bullpen help anyway. Ah yes the old 'Trade to win now and it's all good, unless you don't and three years later those players become stars and it's a bad move'................) Also consider bringing up Josh Hancock for the 'pen. I would put Powell ahead of Geary and Hernandez. If they trade for Villone I am going to be sick. The only one in the phils bullpen I would definitely put him over is Hernandez. I am really getting antsy to see Polanco traded so Utley can get the full time gig. I think getting Utley in the lineup full time could be as big as a trade.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 Call me crazy, but I'd like to see the Phillies bench Jimmy Rollins, move Polanco to shortstop, and play Utley at second.
the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2004 I am just not a real big Polanco fan. I think it was the game against Leiter last week when Leiter went to full counts to just about every single batter, save one (him). For all of the talk about how he is such a smart player, swinging on the first pitch twice when he can not find the zone just irked me. It just kind of got under my skin. Plus, at this point, he seems to actually have trade value, so I could go for getting something for him now.

Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2004 Gammons said the Phillies looked into trading Ryan Howard to Tampa for Rocco Baldelli. The Rays Owner quickly said Baldelli will not be traded. What about the Astros. Any news if their looking into moving Kent, and Beltrane? Would a Kent to Oakland for say Joe Blanton, and a couple other prospects be too far fetched. Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2004 I don't even want Unit in pinstripes. Don't get me wrong, I would cheer for him and everything, but I honestly don't think we need him to win this year, and there is no way in hell I give up Posada or any other everyday player for him. Vazquez is a horse, Contreras has finally got his shit together, Lieber has been solid, El Duque has never had a bad postseason, and they'll have a rested Brown and Moose, plus the bullpen is aces this year. I'm feeling good about our pitching staff as is. (Dream mode on) The Yankees will re-aquire Clemens and Pettite (Dream mode off)
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 22, 2004 If RJ stays in Arizona, which I think he will, nothing would bring me greater pleasure than to watch Randy Johnson become the most unbearable human being on earth to be around. Be a nasty son of a bitch to everyone and anyone in his way until that contract expires. (Dream mode on) The Yankees will re-aquire Clemens and Pettite (Dream mode off) Pettitte? You seem to enjoy this whole "walking wounded" bit the Yankees are doing. Three starters on the DL leaves me a little less than giddy.

I'd be shocked if that trade worked. Ryan Howard is not that great of a prospect, and he's not going to get a grade A player in return. As for Oakland, I doubt they are going to deal Joe Blanton anytime soon.
