Guest Dids Report post Posted July 28, 2004 Moneymaker got royaly sucked-out on to bust the first day. Somebody hit runner-runner to knock him out. Everybody I know how's played with him says that he's a very solid tournament player. The guy who won this year is FAR from an internet pro. He might be painted that way when they show the coverage, but he's been a very solid B&M player for years. One of the things pros will tell you is that tells are VERY overrated. You should be able to learn a lot about a person by just looking at their bets, the cards they show down, and what they do. FWIW- I didn't like Caro's book. I think it's worth reading, but I wouldn't rely on it to heavily. What a lot of online players might make up in live experience, they tend to have a much greater exposure to poker theory, more on the fly math skills (because the internet game is faster paced), and just the benefit of playing a much, much higher number of hands each year. CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 I play no-limit holdem and pot-limit Omaha tournaments (single and multitable) on PokerStars. I tried playing on Party and kept timing out all the time. I'm probably going to the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods in October as well. Going as in playing, or going as in watching? I've got a lot of friends who play at the 'Woods. Dunno if any of them are playing in that event. Playing in the early events. I'll definitely take a shot at the $100 NL multi-play, and also the $500 Omaha hi/lo. I played in that one two years ago, and sat next to TJ Cloutier at the opening table. Even made four jacks on him (couldn't squeeze any money out of him, of course).
Guest Dumb Fuck Report post Posted July 29, 2004 Sorry to dumb down this thread... I have no idea what half the shit that Dids is saying here. World Series of Poker needs to be live. I fucking hate when there's 3 people left, 10 minutes in the show, and knowing who's going to win. The final 1-on-1 showdown is the most exciting part of the game, and it's ruined nearly every time. Yeah, poker rules, although I only play it a couple times a year, so I forget all the hands and then have to relearn them all again.

Problem is that will take HOURS. I actually don't find heads up play that interesting. All of those events are flimed so far in advance that I know who won, so the drama isn't seeing who won, but how they did it. Fox did a live poker broadcast a couple weeks ago, people said good things about it. They had a 5 minute delay, that that seemed to work. At something like the WSOP, I'm not sure that would work, or that the pros would be OK with it. btw- if you don't know what I'm talking about- and you're interested in learning, check out the resources that I provided in some of my earlier links. J. Hungerford Smith 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 I play on UltimateBet (mostly sit and go tournaments) and I also play whenever my friends have home games. The home games we usually play Hold'em but I've tried to convince the others that we should also start playing pot-limit Omaha and 7-Stud. The reason they usually don't show poker tournaments live is because there are a lot of uninteresting hands that are edited out of the broadcast. Everyone folding to the big blind happens a lot more than it looks like it does on TV, especially during head's up play, one of my friends commented on how it seems like someone has Ace-King or a pocket pair every time, but it's only because they edit out the boring hands. Also, if a hand is being shown live on television it's highly possible for someone to be cheating. I'm sure most of the top poker players wouldn't do that, but still. As far as poker books go, I own T.J. Cloutier's Championship No-Limit and Pot-Limit Hold'em, Phil Hellmuth's Play Poker Like the Pros, and of course Doyle Brunson's Super System. Hellmuth's is not as good of a poker book as it is entertaining, but Cloutier's is brilliant and of course everyone says how great Super System is.
Jorge Gorgeous 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2004 Just played in another homegame tonight. The group I play with has been shifting more towards ring games than tournament. I like the ring game more, better risk/reward ratio I think. You guys like ring or tourny better?

At something like the WSOP, I'm not sure that would work, or that the pros would be OK with it. The Fox broadcast was pretty cool, EXCEPT when they got to the final two of D'Agostino and Ivey. Heads up is like a soccer match - there's a lot of back and forth, with spurts of attacking. Except that in soccer you can really get caught up in it because the fans are going nuts for 90+ minutes. You don't get that in poker, and so all the back-and-forth pots become tedious. wrt Moneymaker he seems to be the type to play the person more than the cards, which can get him in trouble and almost knocked him out a few times last year. I've played exactly one home game for money and I've learned a very valuable lesson from that - I shouldn't play for money after a night of drinking and going to tittie bars. I've yet to hit the onlines for tourneys, but I probably will soon. For now it's still the free limit games, and playing mah jong for money...
Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2004 Interesting sit-and-go on UB last night. I was up about 500 chips and had a K-10 suited on the button, so I called. A 10 flopped, as well as the 9 and 3 of my suit. It got checked to me, and with top pair and four to the flush, I bet at it. Three people called. The turn was the Ace of my suit, giving me the nut flush. The foon to my left bets big, another guy folds, the player to my right goes all-in, and I raise to put the player to my left all-in, too. The guy to my left has a smaller flush, and the guy to my right has 10-9, giving him 2 pair. So of course, a 9 falls on the river to give him the full house. I end up with a puny 450 chips since I won the side pot, and I now had a little more than half the chips the next lowest player had. I'm down to 350 when I double up with Aces under, and from there, I start picking up pots, soon getting back over 1000, and eventually becoming the chip leader again. It gets down to three of us, ensuring that I'll make money on the tourney, and the three of us play for quite a while before one guy finally gets eliminated. The other remaining player and I trade the chip lead back and forth for a while before he wins a pretty big pot. I have K-10 suited again, and raise out of the big blind. He calls, and the flop is A-3-A. He checks, and since I figure the odds are very small that he has an A in heads-up, I go all-in. He calls, and of course, has the Ace. I can't complain, since I still made money, played in some very good short-handed pots, and rallied back from being by far the low man at the table to the chip leader. Anyway... You guys like ring or tourny better? It depends. Ring games can get our of hand if one person is allowed to stockpile all the chips. If you make people buy in from the chip leader sometimes, this can be managed. In a tournament, it's fine (and expected) that one person will have a large chip lead, but in a ring game, it's unbalancing. If that's managed well, I prefer ring games, but only slightly. CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2004 I'm now confirmed for the first week of the World Poker Finals at the end of October. I'll be playing in the Multi-Play NLHE tournament on Monday (and hopefully Tuesday), and the Omaha/8 tournament on Wednesday. I have a très cher room at Great Cedars in the casino proper, and a cheapo room at Red Roof Inn in New London (about 20 minutes away). One of them will be cancelled, likely depending on how I do in the NLHE Championship at the Akwesasne Casino in upstate NY.

Guest Dids Report post Posted August 18, 2004 Thanks, knew there was somebody else. However, to put this in a point of reference. Those guys were playing against tiny fields. Last year is was like 830ish and that was the biggest ever, this year like 2K. I think almost more impressive than their back to backs is Dan Harrington making it to two final tables the past two years.
Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted August 18, 2004 I think almost more impressive than their back to backs is Dan Harrington making it to two final tables the past two years. I agree completely, considering the ridiculous size of this year's field. It's a tremendous achievement, and a testament to the man's mad SKILLZ~! in tournament poker. My roommate is a big fan of his. I wonder if they'll crack 5000 players next year? The WSOP isn't starting at Binion's, so they might be anticipating more record numbers. The final two days are still at Binion's, though.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted August 18, 2004 I think almost more impressive than their back to backs is Dan Harrington making it to two final tables the past two years. Definitely. I was amazed when he made this year's final table. I think the only thing that comes close would be Chan finishing 1-1-2 from 1987-1989. I wonder if they'll crack 5000 players next year? The WSOP isn't starting at Binion's, so they might be anticipating more record numbers. The final two days are still at Binion's, though. I could see it happening. If they hold the opening rounds at the Rio, they could easily hold that many.

DMann2003 0 Report post Posted August 19, 2004 Damn, everytime I find out about a torunament in my area it's too late for me to get off work and be available for it the whole weekend. Guest Dids Report post Posted August 19, 2004 Dan's very, very good. Easily one of the top tournament players out there. He's also a pretty good person in terms of writing and speaking about the game. His website is Full Contact Poker.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 Yesterday, I won a $7+$1 sub-qualifier, and then won the subsequent $64+$6 main qualifier, to get into the PartyPoker $1,000,000 guaranteed tournament tomorrow...and now I find out I can't use the seat. Stephen Joseph 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2004 That sucks man I'm in two games this weekend, one I host (I love my new chips) Ever had this shit happen to you..well for me it was a good thing Scenario (4 people left, I'm number 2 in chips) In my hand, pocket deuces. I call. Chipstack 4 folds, and Leader and 3 call as well. The flop comes 2,2,A. Right now, I'm sitting on 4 of a kind, and I know no one else can beat that on the flop. That's cash money for me. but I check. 3 goes all-in. Leader calls the all-in, I call the leader as I'm hoping to suck him out some more. Turn brings a K. I check, he checks. River brings another ace. I'm thinking this whole time buddy's got an ace, so I'm thinking he'll bite. He's not betting like he had a full house on the flop, as he wouldve bullied me on the turn. I raise all in, and he calls. Damn...I was hoping he didn't have A,A. Chipstack 3 shows A,A. WHEW! Leader then shows A,K. Damn, and my four of a kind beats both full houses. What damn crazy game that was
Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted September 21, 2004 Huh? There were 2 Aces onboard and he had pocket aces? I think you lost that one, d00d, unless your cheating skills are quite svg.
Stephen Joseph 0 Report post Posted September 21, 2004 Sorry, I meant a K. You'd be right though there. Last Sunday I was all-in to get into the money (trying to set myself up) with K,J offsuited. I was called by pocket 5's. On the flop, K,8,J. I'm thrilled and screaming. Nothing comes on the turn, and a freaking 5 came on the river... Shoot. 4th place sucks. Guest Real F'n Show Report post Posted September 22, 2004 Just won $200 last weekend, playing with 5 other friends with a $50 buy-in. Second place got $100, first got $200, and I took one of my friends out to win it all. He went all in with three 9's, and I took him out with a full house. And of course, I spent $20 of my winnings on a "World Poker Championship" game for my computer the next day. Cool game.

Dr. Tom 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2004 Never played on either. I have a PartyPoker account because I've heard it's easy money there, and I'll probably put money in that account shortly.
