Benoit DVD Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Guest M. Harry Smilac

The commentary issue for the Scorpio match bites but Schivone pretty much talked to himself aloud the whole time so it wasn't so bad.The worst part is the crowd noise is almost muted.

The highlight of the match is Tony's classic "Sidewalk Slam~!" after Benoit hits a spinebuster. :D

So far i'm liking this one as much as the flair dvd if not more for the fact that the matches have aged much better.

Funny thing was that I knew most of what Jesse said, so little things like Tony's emphasis of the word "wrestlers" made sense. Jesse makes any announcer better just with his presence, and this match was no exception. Jesse kept Tony from getting too lazy, and I was quite pissed by the absence of his voice. It also took me a little while to be sure that it was the same Benoit vs Scorpio match because they didn't start off with the discussion about Scorpio's dancing.

I actually have the original broadcast of this and it's truly a shame that they couldn't put it on here. Great stuff, as Jesse and Tony really keep the subject matter based on the match in the ring(God knows that is the furthest thing from what happens today)and it comes across as an even better match with the good commentary.

I just watched the Liger match, and damn that thing rules. Some might find it a bit slow in the middle, but it turns to complete awesomeness when the start running off the near falls. Loved this match.

Random thoughts.

Just watched the main feature, and while I'm not usually a fan of the documentaries, this rated very highly. A little too WWE-centric, but that's to be expected, I guess. More on the Japanese period would be nice, as we've all seen the more recent stuff. I don't understand why they spent so long on Rock / Benoit from 2000, and then didn't include it as an extra, but if it counts down on blur-o-vision, then that's fine. Actually, there's very little in the way of blur, and it's not obnoxious at all. Him and HBK are about the best in this respect, they didn't do much during the scratch-logo era, unlike Rock or Foley.

As Temp said, the Owen part was very emotional, and it did bring a tear to my eye. The final look round the Hart dungeon too brings chills. Even just seeing a photo of Bret, Stu, Owen, Bruce and the rest of the Harts... wow.

Benoit's voice... I've never noticed how gravelly it is before, but it really went through my sub. Kudos to WWE for mixing it into 5.1, as well.

The insert on the box says there's a "Rise and Fall of ECW" DVD confirmed for November.

Cole and Tazz just bullsit with each other, trying to be wacky hilarious best friends, although Tazz does provide some decent background to the matches (if somewhat dumbed down). Weird hearing Tazz doing most of the PBP, and he goes on this weird rant about Sasuke, who kicked him in the mouth once and was a dick about it. Professional, Tazz, professional.

Malenko and Benoit are good, but hampered by Todd "I know nothing and haven't done any research" Grisham. He asks Benoit a lot of questions, and stumbles over them - rehearsals would have been great.

Listen to Tazz & Cole for the first viewing, and then stick with the original commentary, I think.

Finally, some of the artifacting is awful. Check out HHH, when he's standing on the ramp right as he comes out at WMXX, I think my SVCD copy is better quality.

Was anyone else freaked out by Paul Heyman's oppertunistic aproach to Sabu's neck. I mean replaying it and having Joey Styles break down the fall was really creepy.

I was a bit dissapointed that they didn't talk any of Benoit's experience in Mexico. I mean it was probably a short tour of duty, but I still wish they had touched on it. Same with Stampede. They should have shown some actual Stampede fotage. I know that they don't own the Stampede footage, but they coulda worked out a deal.

Man I wish he'd bring back the Benoit Bomb full time.

I thought it was interesting that with the Grisham/Benoit/Malenko commentary for the Japan stuff, they were in kayfabe mode, with Grisham asking about strategy and treating it like an actual competition, but for the Regal/Benoit commentary, Pritchard treated it like a performance.

I wish they had chosen a different match from the Best of Seven series as the eigth match was kind of lack-luster.

Kevin Sullivan is rather short.

I had forgotten why, despite his complete lack of skill, I will always cherish Dusty Rhodes on commentary.

I actually like Cole and Tazz on commentary. Not the best, but they play well off each other.

I was digging the silkscreened Pegasus tights

I really wish that Al Snow had been used correctly. The double tables match showed that he coulda been much more.

Benoit used a headscissors attack on Eddie, was that ever really one of his moves, or did he just use it when the situation called for it?

All and all... a great DVD.

Well...it is a three-hour DVD, where WWEHV sacrificed compression quality to satisfy more consumers with additional content. This minor flaw is evident on a few DVD's where there are entrances with distinct flashes and strobes (Triple H's entrance(s) at Wrestlemania XVI and XX).

Depending on the amount of SVCDs Wrestlemania XX is broken up into, the compression quality on your copy should remain pretty strong.

He wrestled a good little bit in Mexico. His main feud was with Villano III. There isn't too much footage of Benoit in Mexico though. Some but not a lot.

Some Stampede against Johnny Smith would have been nice. I wondered what happened there. Didn't thewrestlingchannel get new Stampede footage for the Dynamite Kid special rescently?

Man I wish he'd bring back the Benoit Bomb full time.

Ditto, as well as some other stuff. But I could same the same thing about a few other wrestlers in the WWE too.

I wish they had chosen a different match from the Best of Seven series as the eigth match was kind of lack-luster

A little anticlimatic perhaps due to Benoit's unselfishness but arguably the best match of the series and it had a couple nice spots that built off their previous matches. I like this one a lot.

I wish they had chosen a different match from the Best of Seven series as the eigth match was kind of lack-luster

There've been some great Dusty quotes over the years. You could tell he loved saying them too.

I really wish that Al Snow had been used correctly.  The double tables match showed that he coulda been much more.

Yup, Snow could've been used better. I saw another match the two had between each other and I enjoyed it even more than Double Tables.

Benoit used a headscissors attack on Eddie, was that ever really one of his moves, or did he just use it when the situation called for it?

No, not really. He did use the same move against Eddie in their BOSJ match from 7/13/95. Lyger who was on commentary gave out the same expression Heenan did when Benoit hit it. In a match they had a little earlier in the tournament Benoit hits a standing frankensteiner out of the mercy fight position. He once used the headscissors out of the corner turnbuckle against El Samurai in 93. The one where your opponent runs in and the wrestler at the turnbuckles pushes himself up with his arms while jumping at the same time and hits the headscissors throwing his opponent back to the centre of the ring.

I found it kind of funny how Benoit didn't want to comment on the whole Nancy-Kevin-Benoit situation, saying he wanted to tell his kids before he told the world, when you can go over to 411mania and find out what happend in Keith's old rants.

Just a guess, but something tells me that Benoit MIGHT know a bit more about the situation than SK. Granted, SK *IS* a known Benoit stalker, so he might know 90% of it...

OK, I got it. And by the way, Wal-mart sells it for $18.00, which is $10 cheaper than Media Play here.

Anyway, this is a great DVD. What you guys said is true, and I am turning into a Benoit fan. I wish his passion and emotion came out more on TV, but it's great to see them on this feature. Also, you get the sense of his historical importance here, and that is missed by RAW.

Really good matches, great feature. My biggest surprise: How good Al Snow was.

I think my fav match on here has to be the Sullivan brawl. It's just so damn stiff and I sware that last stall door shot Sullivan gives Benoit in the bathroom makes me cringe everytime.

No technical masterpiece but it's nice and short and I love the finish with Arn coming down and the crowd going ballistic.

They put the Rumble 03' match on there but cut out the ovation afterwards, wtf?

The Benoit/Regal match is cool but the crowd noise is severely muted by Pritchard and Cole's commentary so you only get to hear them say their chanting this and that and not actually hear them.

Sorry to bother but are there any easter eggs besides the one of Benoit cutting an ECW promo and the "I'm Christ Benoit" pre-Mania egg?

Disc 2: Go to the last page of Extras. Scroll down to "Back" and right click twice. The tooth in the lower corner will highlight. Hit enter. You will be treated to Chris Benoit's father sharing the story of how how his son lost his tooth.

I love the Benoit DVD so much and it is perfect alongside the "Best of Benoit in Japan" DVD that I already have.

The main documentary feature on his life in wrestling is worth the money itself.

Agreed. Usually I skip through the feature and just watch the match. This one was very captivating though. I'd say the best of the recent WWE releases.

And for the pre-mania "I am Chris Benoit" thing go to the William Regal Pillman Tribute match and hit left or right.

Very excellent DVD, the 2 Cold Scorpio match was really impressive along with the Great Sasuke (sp?) match. Personally I thought the Cole/Tazz commentary was actually very entertaining and helpful since these were the first Japanese matches I ever watched.

Hmm, does anyone have an audio file of the commentarry for the Benoit/Scorpio match?

Just to hear what the commentarry was like with Ventura in it?

I don't know where you'd find that but the one thing I do know was that Jesse was a big time mark for Benoit during his commentary.

They also changed the entrance themes for the wrestlers in WCW & ECW.

The ECW ones I can kinda understand...since they used real songs for them.

The WCW ones I never did get though. They change Benoit's WCW theme, yet keep Bret Hart's WCW theme?

Something really screwy about that, if you ask me.

Actually, they did change Bret's.

The one that really baffled me, though, was Booker T. I mean, he STILL uses that song, why would they have to change it?

Ah...thought that was Bret's WCW theme.

As for Booker...well, that's a really good question. Why'd they give him his WrestleMania X-8 video game theme?

So, is Benoit's DVD better than Hogan and Flair's? Those two I felt were some true career retrospectives and worth the money. I'm still deciding on the Foley DVD, but Benoit's looks really good from your guys posts.
