ROH 8/7 Philly

Recommended Posts

It'll prolly be called Epic Encounter II or something like that due to the main event being Danielson vs. Aries 2/3 Falls.

It's been said before, but allow me to reiterate: Acid with the ROH title would make baby Jebus cry.

For the love of all that is pure and holy, do not put that belt on Acid just to "shock the smarks that think they know everything". Look at me, I have doubt! I have doubt damn you!

Well you don't have to worry about Acid winning the Title as Joe retains, results for the show other than Aries/Dragon are:

John Walters d. Nigel McGuinness to earn a shot at the Pure Title in Boston (Walters countered an Indian Deathlock into a rollup for the win)

Roderick Strong d. Izzy with a backbreaker

Carnage Crew d. Dan Maff/BJ Whitmer (Allison Danger interfered, costing Maff/Whitmer the match)

Alex Shelley d. Jay Lethal, Too Cold Scorpio, & Ace Steel (Shelley pinned Lethal)

* Jim Cornette will return to ROH on 10/2 and will reunite the MIDNIGHT EXPRESS of Stan Lane, Bobby Eaton, and Dennis Condrey*

The Briscoe Brothers d. Homicide/Low Ki (Jay pinned Ki)

After the match Samoa Joe ran out to attack Ki and it lead to a huge brawl with the entire locker room emptying.

The Havana Pitbulls d. CM Punk/Colt Cabana to win the ROH Tag Team Titles (Romero pinned Cabana will a rollup)

Samoa Joe d. Trent Acid to retain the ROH World Title (Joe pinned Acid after an Island Driver)

The guy getting results on the ROH board said it looked like Acid legit broke his ankle and was carried out by doctors. Hope he's alright.

The main events just finished, with Austin Aries defeating American Dragon 2 falls to 1. Aries made Dragon submit to the Cattle Mutilation in around 45 minutes for the 1st fall, Dragon pinned Aries after turning the Cattle Mutilation into a pin at about 65 minutes total for the 2nd fall, and the deciding 3rd fall Aries pins Dragon with the 450 Splash, the match length finishing somewhere between 75 and 80 minutes.

Any reports on this match and it's star rating yet?

I've seen varied, everything from ***** MOTY to good, but not as good as London vs. Dragon 2/3 falls, to something that was way too long.

According to PWInsider's Mike Johnson, Aries/Dragon was originally going to be two hours and forty-five minutes, but they called an audible in the ring and decided to "only" go eighty.

Holy shit!

Really good. I don't think its the best match I've seen this year, but it was still really good. Around ****, maybe a little higher. Live ratings are pretty hard to do.

I will say this, I enjoyed watching the match unfold live more than any other match I've seen live. It may or may not be the best match that I've watched in person, but it was the most I've enjoyed a live match (if that makes sense....It is hard to explain). Just watching everything they did, how they recovered after a couple mistakes, and the way everything unfolded was a experience. I don't know how well it will hold up on tape, but I really enjoyed it from a live-viewing perspective, not knowing what they were going to do or how long they were going to go.

In the end, I think they made the right decision "only" going 80 minutes. When a match reaches a certain time, something has to give. That could be doing an unrealistically and/or uncharacteristically slow build at the beginning of the match in order to pace themselves better. It could be kicking out of ridiculous amounts of punishment near the end. Even laying around for the last 40 minutes to sell the (probably real) exhaustion or the opposite route of doing more than someone would realistically be able to do after 2 hours of punishment, just to keep the match exciting. They managed to avoid most of those downfalls (and more), so in my eyes, 80 minutes was a fine time to end it. For the sheer spectacle of it, it would have been cool to watch them wrestle for three hours, but in terms of having a good and realistic match, 80 minutes was a lot better.

Definitely worth picking up when it comes out. Although some people have said the crowd was out of it, besides some guys yelling at Green Lantern fan, everyone is pretty focused on the match. Starting about 30 minutes into the first fall, there are some really good nearfalls that the crowd eats up (same in the last fall). The only big miscue was Danielson getting his leg caught up in the middle rope when doing his tope. He takes a nasty spill to the floor and takes a good five minutes to get up. They recover from it well, though, and that was one of the things that made watching the match so enjoyable.
