I've never understood the PBP issue/argument (of course, some of this might come from the fact that I am one). If a PBP continues the actions that got them banned in the first place, then they should be rebanned for it (also, as has been argued before, trolls, by their nature, enjoy the extra attention granted them by overreaction, it's better to ignore them rather than play into their bullshit...notice I never posted in a thread from "Birds in the Hotel"), however, sometimes people just screw up and need a "break" (even if it is only for a day/day and a half until they re-reg). If a PBP changes their attitude/actions and "slips through the radar", then so be it - the board benefits from their presence, and if it doesn't, see above.

 

Really, the whole PBP nonsense (in all its instances) is just people taking internet nonsense way too seriously. It's my opinion that, if the mere knowledge that someone who may have done something mean in the past is contributing (and they'd have to be contributing, otherwise in repeating their actions they'd be re-banned) bothers you that much, take a fucking break. I had a "sabbatical" from message-boarding on a large-scale for many months, and now that I'm kinda sorta thinking about getting back into it I can better appreciate the "art" behind it all.

 

Some people get all worked up about PBP's, to the point where they forget they're still people...I mean, it's not as if they're Negroes or anything.

It depends.

 

Some of them have distinctive style, which makes them easy to spot. Some of them are foolish and give away their former identities early. Those are obviously the easy ones to catch. For the rest, you have to go by IP addresses. One of the things I started doing in the uber-secret Staff folder is having everyone post the IPs of people they ban, so we have a reference handy. Otherwise, you have to use their posting IPs and compare it (or them) to the ones in the ban filters. Dynamic IPs from dialup ISPs can throw this off. Some people spoof their IPs and/or use proxy servers, but there are ways to find out what their real IPs are. Still, we have to be able to compare those to something. I don't know PBP's IPs off the top of my head, and I doubt anyone else does, either.
