Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 29, 2004 Yankees plan to build new stadium by Anne Michaud The New York Yankees plan to announce within the next two weeks that they want to build a new, $750 million stadium across the street from Yankee Stadium. The new stadium would be in McCombs Dam Park. According to sources close to the deal, the team will ask for $450 million in public infrastructure investment to build a hotel and conference center, a new Metro North stop, and a ferry landing, as well as three new parks elsewhere in the Bronx. Under state law, the team must replace the parkland it uses. The team will likely seek to finance the facility by issuing tax-exempt Industrial Development Authority bonds. Sources say revenue from the new stadium would more than pay off the bonds. The Yankees were at first looking at a design that would have increased luxury boxes to 70. But the design did not work well, and the team is now planning 50 to 52 skyboxes. A spokesman for the team says the Yankees are continuing to work out the details with the Bloomberg administration and that an announcement is expected in the coming weeks. According to sources, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion played a major role in bringing the city and the Yankees together. Prophet of Mike Zagurski 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 Goodbye tradition in the name of profits. So, are they going to level it and turn it into a parking lot just like Chicago Stadium? Why not build a bigger MSG while we're at it?
Bored 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 Yankees can't compete without a new stadium.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 29, 2004 Goodbye tradition in the name of profits. So, are they going to level it and turn it into a parking lot just like Chicago Stadium? Yep. Maybe if we're really lucky fans, we'll get the baseball necessites that have been going around, like a ferris wheel and a swimming pool.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 Alright, I know people said they would protest and fight to the end to protect Wrigley so WHY IS NO ONE looking to protect the hallowed halls?!?!?! I mean, rip down the home of the Yankees for some new piece of crap with no meaning to it?

The most we can really try and do is keep the current building standing as a landmark.
Jorge Gorgeous 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 If this really happens I'm gonna be heartbroken... luckily, I've been to Yankee Stadium, but the fact that I'll never be able to take my own kids there makes me fucking sick.
TheBigSwigg 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2004 That sucks. I'm a Red Sox fan, and even I don't want Yankee Stadium replaced. Too much history to just brush off. Not to mention the new stadium would probably be just another corporate named stadium.
Guest GreatOne Report post Posted July 29, 2004 But will the team be sold to Red McCombs and be named, um, McCombs' Damn Park?

A parking garage?!?! What has to be done to at least keep the stadium standing?
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2004 WHAT!?!?!?!? I hate the Yankee's but I am totally against that. The place has so much history.......hell it's the most historic ballpark in the world! Why tear it down!? This is bullshit! Damn them!
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2004 To join in: I'm a Cubs fan, AND I like the Red Sox, BUT I can't see Yankee Stadium go. Too bad Bud Selig would be the last guy to invoke the BIoB clause to save The House That Ruth Built, though. It may not have the classic and bizarre architecture of Fenway, the purity of Wrigley, but holy crap, it's Yankee Stadium, where they've played and won for all these years. There's no reason to leave. It's huge, was recently refurbished, and it's not like New York baseball fans are clamoring for amusement parks past right center field. No man-made creation can last forever, I suppose, but the four most important ballparks today (Wrigley, Fenway, Yankee, and Dodger) can all last a little longer than this. If they saved Fenway, they'll save Yankee Stadium. I can't see this really happening. I just can't.
Guest Dumb Fuck Report post Posted July 30, 2004 It's nice that New York state, which has dire financial problems, has the funds to build this.

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2004 I'm pretty sure that most Yankee's fans don't want this stadium built. I'm pretty sure they love the historic nature of Yankee Stadium. And what's NYC going to tell them? "Go fuck yourselves. We want a new stadium and you're going to pay for it!"
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2004 Yankee Stadium holds intrinsic value in itself. Its what separates the Yankees from the Mets. Without the stadium, what's the difference?

Guest Nelly's Bandaid Report post Posted July 30, 2004 FUCKING BULLSHIT. Ugh, I can't even begin to describe how this pisses me off. The mere thought of never being able to see a game in that ballpark ever again just makes me want to strangle the nearest neck.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 30, 2004 Yankee Stadium holds intrinsic value in itself. Its what separates the Yankees from the Mets. Without the stadium, what's the difference? 24 championships and 35 pennants. But that's not the point.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2004 The point is the ballpark is a major franchise value in itself. There's a reason they haven't sold naming rights, and that's because it would devalue the franchise more than the revenue it would bring. That's why Yankee Stadium is important. Guest Wildbomb 4:20 Report post Posted July 30, 2004 God, I hate the Yanks, but damn...I could never go to a Sox-Yanks series in this new place. It just wouldn't feel right. It would never feel right. I thought that Steinbrenner had sunk to some lows, but this...is just unbelievable at its best and makes me want to shoot the man in the temple at its worst. If they can save Fenway, add new seats every offseason, refurbish the park, and are about to improve all of the infrastructure to keep the stadium going for another 20-30 years...Steinbrenner can do the same to the ole Stadium Bastard. --Ryan

There's a reason they haven't sold naming rights, and that's because it would devalue the franchise more than the revenue it would bring. That's why Yankee Stadium is important. Yankee Stadium is important because it's Yankee freaking Stadium. It's the Stadium where Lou Gehrig gave his farewell. It's the Stadium where Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in post season history. It's the building where Reggie Jackson hit three homruns off three different pitchers in a World Series game. Where The New York Yankees came back from two out, two run deficits in the ninth two nights in a row in the World Series. The Stadium that by itself (not even the team in it) has intimidated the likes of Henry Aaron. It's the home of Ruth and Gehrig and Mantle and DiMaggio and Ford and Berra and they want to make it a fucking PARKING LOT?
Guest Bad Brad Jacobs Report post Posted July 30, 2004 I hate to say it, but the fact is that the older ballparks (NY, STL, BOS, CHI) are just getting their asses handed to them by newer parks that are just way better in every regard, cept maybe atmosphere. I challenge anyone to go to a game at wrigley then a game at the jake in cleveland and tell me which stadium is better suited for baseball in 2004. New stadiums may not have that great mood to them, but how much longer can you wait when places like wrigley are litteraly falling apart? Not long. Esspecially when you see the increased attendance #s for nearly all franchises who have gotten new parks. Sure there is history, but I don't think that history is the main factory in deciding these things, even though maybe it should be.
Star Ocean 3 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2004 It's inevitable. The global corporatization of America's ballparks is an unstoppable blitzkreig of revenue and despair. It cannot be halted. It cannot be withstood. Only delayed. Not even Yankee Stadium can withstand its putrid pummelous power. Repent.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2004 Wrigley and Fenway are one thing, Yankee Stadium is another. It was practically gutted and rebuilt in the mid-70s, so it isn't like the other parks. And I've yet to see why St. Louis needs a new ballpark.
the max 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2004 I hate to say it, but the fact is that the older ballparks (NY, STL, BOS, CHI) are just getting their asses handed to them by newer parks that are just way better in every regard, cept maybe atmosphere. Some are, but 3/4 of those teams routinely sell out their games at home. Can you say the same for Pittsburgh? Cincinnati? I challenge anyone to go to a game at wrigley then a game at the jake in cleveland and tell me which stadium is better suited for baseball in 2004. I gladly would if I had the resources. I don't have the new stadium down here to compare Fenway to. New stadiums may not have that great mood to them, but how much longer can you wait when places like wrigley are litteraly falling apart? As long as they aren't falling down would be my guess. Fenway's been revamped with the Monster seats, Yawkey Way is apparently different now too, it's a completely different attitude in the park now. Not long. Esspecially when you see the increased attendance #s for nearly all franchises who have gotten new parks. Sure there is history, but I don't think that history is the main factory in deciding these things, even though maybe it should be. But how long does it spike attendance? Again, I bring up the Pirates. Brand new ballpark. Wonderful looking too. I'd rather have a winning team than a park will all the bells and whistles. Attendance rises for the first year, but falls back down to where it normally would be if the team sucks. Ask the Pirates.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted July 30, 2004 Well, the Times has the info on the new ballpark as well as the Old one. Here. They are going to change Yankee Stadium into a parking lot with a...soccer field on it. Holy mother of fuck, why not just piss all over it.
