They're probably censoring the lighting of the torch here to prevent terrorist ideas.

I'm watching it right now on CBC. Hopefully there's no censorship, and if they don't show the lighting of the Torch, which is the entire point of the Opening Ceremonies, I'll be rather upset.

So what day is amatuer wrestling set for?

You're going to have to be more specific than that. Wrestling runs from the 22nd to the 29th.

Freestyle, heavyweight division

Watching the replay now, it's pretty impressive. Stadium was filled with water, then a comet hit it and lit the flames of the Olympic rings, and then a little kid came out on an origami boat, then some pregnant chick came out holding Caeser's head, and then this massive head came out of the water and turned into little pieces of humanity and now there's dancers and weird costumes.

Opening ceremonies are wack.

I missed it earlier due to work so I'm watching the tape now (CBC version of course).

I never understood why American coverage is so crummy.

American networks want women to watch, and women don't like sports. Therefore we get lots of Dateline-esqe human interest stories about the athletes, and gymnastics.

Easy=NBC. The Sydney Olympics were all about the stupid profiles.

Yeah, I kept flipping back and forth between NBC and CBC and there's no comparison between the two. Sorry, NBC sucks.

Same here, but it was a great ceremony. Very well done, in my opinion. I was watching it with my friend, who has roots in Croatia, and her family marked out big for them, because apparently, CBC always cut to commercial break when they come out.

I did feel sort of stupid for not knowing some of the countries though. Overall, nicely done.

The special effects were brilliant. But it wasn't any where near as good as Sydney's, but from what I heard, they didn't even try to be.

The Couldren was completely lame, but the giant monolithic head busting up and all the stuff that followed up until the double helix formation was awesome.

It was the reverse for me in the 2000 Olympics: I didn't care much for the ceremonial theatrics, but I loved the lighting of the Torch, this year I didn't care for the torch lighting, but I thought the rest of the ceremony was great, especially the part with the monolithic head and the double helix light effects.

I loved Sydney's lighting of the torch. Of the four torch lightings I can remember (Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens) this one was the weakest.

I love Bjork and everything, but she is not the right choice to sing at an Opening Ceremony.

And finally, no live coverage in the US? On our coverage they said every country bar one (Thailand, I think, or somewhere in South-East Asia) was showing the Olympics live.

I watched it with my mom and we marked out for Cuba, and were pretty surprised at the strong reaction they got. I was also happy to see the United States, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bosnia/Herzegovina all getting good crowd support.

The only intrigue in these Olympics is whether the basketball team will be able to pull itself together and kick ass like they're supposed to or get the shit kicked out of them by lesser opponents. Everyone knows the US will win most of the shorter track races, the Kenyans will win the longer distance track races, and the Cubans will win at baseball and boxing, and after that I'm really not interested in any of the other events.
