Spaceman Spiff Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Just saw the Phillies "highlights" - a triple play squanders a bases loaded, no out situation for the Phillies (they did get 1 run on a hit batter, though). Somebody put the Phillies out of their misery.

Guest Brian Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Are the Dodgers going to blow their lead?
Bored Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 If Bowa is still the manager of the Phillies tommorrow night then that's probably them officially throwing in the towel. Of course it's too little, too late at this point. Losing nine out of ten on a homestand and blowing a 7-2 lead in the final game? Woof.
The Czech Republic Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Bwahahaha. Sportscenter just made a humorous montage of Phillies blunders.
Bruiser Chong Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 This Twins/Yanks game has been the best one I've seen in a LONG time. What looked to be a blowout in the Yankees favor, the Twins wound up coming within one before the 8th. Gordon had runners at the corners with nobody out. He got the first two and had Shannon Stewart at a full count, before he hit a triple to score the game tying and go-ahead runs. Then, Nathan blows the save in the 9th, as Sheffield hits his second homer of the game. Awesome stuff. It should also be noted that there was a controversial play earlier in the game, where a Twins run was scored as the runner was thrown out at third making the third out. But the out was recorded before the run crossed the plate. Of course, Bruce Froemming blew the call and the run counted. Not that I wasn't in favor of that, but hey, more proof that Froemming sucks.
Guest Staravenger Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 And the Yankees reclaim the lead on a Matsui single to right field...but he got caught on the relay throw.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 20, 2004 Author Report Posted August 20, 2004 If Bowa is still the manager of the Phillies tommorrow night then that's probably them officially throwing in the towel. Of course it's too little, too late at this point. Losing nine out of ten on a homestand and blowing a 7-2 lead in the final game? Woof. There have been three or four moments where I've said, "ok, that's their cue to fire Bowa." He should've been gone after the Marlins sweep. Now its too late.
The Czech Republic Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 But it's not Larry Bowa himself who is hitting into a triple play.
Bruiser Chong Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 I think the window to fire Bowa is closed. Go ahead and do it, but it won't make a difference at this point in the season. In other news, Jose Mesa continues to his stride towards becoming the closer the Phillies knew all too well last season. Only needing one more out to give Oliver Perez a much-deserved victory, Mesa gives up the game-tying homer to Reggies Sanders. Watching the Cardinals this season; it's refreshing to see an entire team having such a great time playing ball. As much as I dislike them on principle because of the Cubs, that demeanor isn't too common these days. They remind me of the Red Sox of 2003 in that respect. Just a bunch of guys who support each other; go out and have a good time playing baseball and winning in the process.
Fuzzy Dunlop Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Once again there is talk of closing Wrigley, they're saying Monday night if it isn't to their satisfaction or whatever. Of course this would be the game I have tickets to.
treble Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 They could just make it 'Hard Hat Giveaway' day.
Vern Gagne Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 This Twins/Yanks game has been the best one I've seen in a LONG time. I told my brother Nathan would blow it, and Sheffield took a pitch low and out of the strikezone into left-center. Really not Nathan's fault. Than he predicted the Matsuhi hit. A bad game for Nathan. Hopefully it's a blip and he's back to normal.
Spaceman Spiff Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 But it's not Larry Bowa himself who is hitting into a triple play. True, but look at last season - Marlins fire their manager, bring in McKeon, and go on to win the World Series. It's too late for that to happen to the Phillies, though.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 20, 2004 Author Report Posted August 20, 2004 For me, the problem is that young players like Jimmy Rollins, Marlon Byrd, Pat Burrell and Brett Myers have failed to develop under Larry Bowa. If one player fails its the player's fault. But when a group fails, you have to look for the root cause. And while I'm assigning blame, why hasn't Joe Kerrigan been fired yet?
mike546 Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 All I know is, the Yankees own all the playoff contenders closers in the American Leauge. Percival, Dotel, Nathan, Foulke have all blown saves against us this year.
Guest webmasterofwrestlegame Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Ironically the Angel's starters have improved considerably since the All-Star break and it is the bullpen that has been erratic.
Bruiser Chong Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 It's not that tough to get Dotel and Foulke to blow a save, though.
the max Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Especially when Foulke goes a week without pitching.
Guest Anglesault Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Well, my vacation ends on a good note as the Yankees at least salvage a win against Minnesota. And add Nathan to the "victim" list that also includes Hoffman, Beck, and K-Rod. Of course, Gagne should be on there as well, but you know, the ball didn't fly over everyone's head, so it's a strike. Not that I'm bitter.
LooseCannon25 Posted August 21, 2004 Report Posted August 21, 2004 Kerrigan fired? The Red Sox are in the wild card spot right now. They're 16 games over .500 Bowa needs to go, The Phillies are the biggest underachieving team that's not named the 1993 NY Mets. Give Buck Showalter manager of the year right NOW!
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted August 21, 2004 Author Report Posted August 21, 2004 Kerrigan fired? The Red Sox are in the wild card spot right now. They're 16 games over .500 Joe Kerrigan left the Red Sox after the 2001 season. He spent a year as a Comcast analyst, and joined the Phillies as a pitching coach in 2003.
the max Posted August 21, 2004 Report Posted August 21, 2004 Dave Wallace is the Red Sox pitching coach now.
