jesse_ewiak 0 Report post Posted August 26, 2004 From the New York Post New Yorkers are pissed at House Speaker Dennis Hastert for claiming New York's requests for reconstruction aid tantamounted to greed in his new book (an "unseemly scramble" for cash. "I want to let Hastert know we want our FDNY cap back," fumed Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., referring to the baseball cap given to Hastert three years ago when the powerful Illinois lawmaker toured Ground Zero shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Vallone, along with a slew of other officials and residents, blasted the Republican leader's claims in his new book, "Speaker," which were reported on the front page of yesterday's Post. Hastert wrote that at the time of the attacks, it was impossible to calculate the cost, continuing, "but already we heard voices asking, 'Who's going to pay for this? How much will it cost?' " Rep. Jose Serrano (D-Bronx) labeled Hastert's remarks "really sad." "Hastert is not complaining about the cost of rebuilding Iraq, yet he complains about rebuilding New York?" Serrano said [...] At Ground Zero, Beth Krumholz, 48, said, "I don't know how you can call it an unseemly scramble for dollars when five buildings were reduced to dust." Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-Queens) pointed out that Florida residents ask for money after the state gets hit by hurricanes. "I guess it's unseemly to ask for help only if you are a New Yorker." OF course, this guy has some more of the GOP greatest hits about NYC. .. WHITE HOUSE ATTACKS NYC AS 'MONEY GRUBBING': New Yorkers "treat [post-9/11 reconstruction funding] as a little money-grubbing game." - White House Budget Director Mitch Daniels, 2/4/02 GOP ATTACKS NEW YORK AS ANTI-AMERICAN: On 3/13/03 Former GOP Congressman and MSNBC talk show host Joe Scarborough said "New York City, the city hit hardest by September 11, now takes a big stand against the war with Saddam. Is the Big Apple sending a bad message to our men and women in uniform?...New York City is the latest city to back war as a final result. Is the Big Apple being anti-American?...New York City, hit the hardest on September 11. Now the very same city is working against the president in his showdown with Saddam...But up next, New York City, ground zero in the attack on America. Now that city's not standing by us in the looming attack on Iraq." GOP SAYS NYC HAS 'CULTURE OF WASTE': On 9/16/95, House Speaker Newt Gingrich accused New York City of having "a culture of waste for which they expect us to send a check." He claimed New York takes more federal money than it receives - a stat that was untrue when he said it and untrue today. As the New York Metro notes " In 2002, the last year for which data are available, New Yorkers sent $65.9 billion in federal taxes to Washington, and yet the federal government sent only $54.5 billion back. In one year, more than $11 billion was sucked out of New York and redistributed across America by the Republicans in Washington who control the federal budget." GOP LAMBASTES DEMOCRATS FOR HOLDING CONVENTION IN NYC: On 8/6/90, Newt Gingrich said "I would personally be very comfortable having the Democratic party going to New York City, standing in the middle of the collapse of the welfare state, and explaining that we, too, could resemble New York City." GOP SAYS GIVING FEDERAL AID TO NYC IS LIKE GIVING IT TO THE MOB: In April 1989, Newt Gingrich said "Congress ought to ask whether we're subsidizing the Cosa Nostra when we aid New York." Guest MikeSC Report post Posted August 26, 2004 *Yawn* Hastert's mention was that, you know, NY has already been given $20B. How much is enough? WHITE HOUSE ATTACKS NYC AS 'MONEY GRUBBING': New Yorkers "treat [post-9/11 reconstruction funding] as a little money-grubbing game." - White House Budget Director Mitch Daniels, 2/4/02 Given the source of this story --- without a link, I say he's full of shit. GOP ATTACKS NEW YORK AS ANTI-AMERICAN: On 3/13/03 Former GOP Congressman and MSNBC talk show host Joe Scarborough said "New York City, the city hit hardest by September 11, now takes a big stand against the war with Saddam. Oh, and I don't suspect the FULL transcript would be available --- considering that he blatantly and obviously cut it up (notice all those "..."? Geez, is it one every other sentence?) GOP SAYS NYC HAS 'CULTURE OF WASTE': On 9/16/95, House Speaker Newt Gingrich accused New York City of having "a culture of waste for which they expect us to send a check." In one year, more than $11 billion was sucked out of New York and redistributed across America by the Republicans in Washington who control the federal budget." Disproving a 1995 statement with 2002 figures doesn't actually disprove anything. GOP LAMBASTES DEMOCRATS FOR HOLDING CONVENTION IN NYC: On 8/6/90, Newt Gingrich said "I would personally be very comfortable having the Democratic party going to New York City, standing in the middle of the collapse of the welfare state, and explaining that we, too, could resemble New York City." An accurate statement. Giuliani's redemption of NYC is borderline miraculous. In 1990, NYC was not much better than Detroit or Washington DC in terms of being a shithole. GOP SAYS GIVING FEDERAL AID TO NYC IS LIKE GIVING IT TO THE MOB: In April 1989, Newt Gingrich said "Congress ought to ask whether we're subsidizing the Cosa Nostra when we aid New York." Oooh, that's harsh -=Mike ...Nice "source" here. *giggle*

Vyce 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2004 I love this thread. Five anti-GOP comments posted to "prove" that the party hates New York - currently hates them, today. Yet three of them? From NINE years ago or OLDER. Of the other two? One is from a conservative PUNDIT, not an actual elected member of the party. Nice try - you win points for making me laugh. Highland 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2004 (edited) *yawn* The GOP is having their convention in NYC only because they want to use ground zero as a reminder of their platform. They shouldn't be surprised that a traditionally Democrat city would have some problems with the GOP. Edited August 27, 2004 by Highland

The crazies will be out in full force and the public will NEVER give those blithering yahoos any semblance of power. But I don't think we'll see any crazies, as I imagine security will be air tight. Unless they hire the same guys that let those highjackers on the planes despite finding the boxcutters on them during the pre-flight search. Also, I wouldn't say Kerry's campaign is reeling, because the last time I checked, both candidates were in a virtual dead heat, with their polling numbers falling within the margin of error. If your goal is to attract new voters --- preaching to the choir is a waste of time. They could have gone to Dallas --- but how would that possibly give them a new voter? But I don't think we'll see any crazies, as I imagine security will be air tight. Oh, we will. And, rest assured, it'll get covered. There are too many people planning on being there. Unless they hire the same guys that let those highjackers on the planes despite finding the boxcutters on them during the pre-flight search. Unlike the far more intelligent mayor of Boston, Nurse Bloomberg is giving the assorted yahoos pretty much free reign in NYC. If we're lucky, it'll get Bush re-elected and get that tool Bloomberg tossed out of office for ANYBODY else --- including a Democrat. -=Mike
jesse_ewiak 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2004 I'm sorry they didn't put them in cages or a designated area, Mike. Then again, if this was 1968, you'd probably be saying the March on Washington was a dangerous idea. I mean, letting people speak freely without being vetted by the powers that be. That's UnRepublican! So it's no biggie.

That's UnRepublican! So it's no biggie. Funny --- it was the Democrats who caged them. Weird, huh? "The party of free speech" has spent the past few months threatening to sue TV stations if they run SBVT ads, trying to get their publisher to not print the books, and caging all dissidents in a tiny area in Boston. All the while bitching about the non-existant assault on rights of the PATRIOT Act. The rest is the usual fucking idiocy out of you. I'll give you a piece of advice: Better to stay silent and be considered an idiot than to speak and remove all doubt. -=Mike

Just for clarification, boxcutters weren't illegal to bring on planes at that time. I think knives with a 3"(?) blade or smaller were okay. Why else would they use a boxcutter instead of an actual knife?
